ashan

"Ashan music is a new channel being explored by sean conrad, previous explorer of gkfoes vjgoaf. Ashan is to be a place for healing, loving, and openness. the music of Ashan is to be given and received with an open heart. it is teaching from 'the gentle way', the way of Ashan. i would love to share these sounds with you anywhere: in the forest, on the beach, in a house, in the street, wherever feels right... i am currently based in melbourne, australia. but i will be doing a gkfoes vjgoaf tour in america this july with Wyld Wyzrdz. feel free to get in touch. namaste." gentle ways

tsembla

 tsembla ~ fauna (ikuisuus 2011)

"The Turku-based Marja Johansson aka Tsembla use traditional acoustic and electric instrumentation to create oddly affecting folk miniatures that combine the scrabbly forest-folk sound of Kuupuu, Lau Nau, with nostalgic keyboards and variously displaced sonics." volcanic tongue

"Decay and copulation rites flourish around a trash raft that fish take for a coral reef. The sun blinds your eyes, but you can see a figure there... And in the desert, wind, erosion and echoes work the surroundings of Poly Styrene’s ex-hang-out, an oasis filled with lively people and empty beer cans. Ornamental carpets and fresh water, too. There it is again! It’s Tsembla playing her modified samples, strings, reeds, percussion and the whole range of modern psych instruments to create fiestas with strong twists of pop music. Sounds old and new and like nothing you’ve ever heard before." n~m

wind in willows

"Republic of Karelia's very own Anton Filatov is presenting his debut release. This young man lives on the outskirts of Petrozavodsk, basically right in the forest. When he's not busy studying physics and astronomy he composes mellow soundscapes with synths and guitars. He utilizes quite a variety of other sources, too: birdsongs, tape loops, delay wobble. Filled with gentle chords and easy sinewaves this tape is a perfect soundtrack for relaxation. Come here and rest. Spray-painted cassettes, textured blue vellum J-cards. Edition of 50. dead drums

"A slow motion trip into a flooded city for fun. Extended stay in the bubbles, the surges of white wash, the drowning neon gashes. We wanted to believe there would always be this white light. It faded and got more beautiful." bathetic records / dead drums

stephen molyneux

"...last year Stephen Molyneux (Horsehair Everywhere) was living in Thailand. Riding around on motorbikes, running through the jungle, playing noise shows at Bangkok art spaces, going on visa-renewing border-crossing adventures, all while the Red Shirts were stirring up more and more intense political unrest. On one of his excursions through Battambang & Siem Reap provinces in Cambodia, Molyneux made these field recordings on cassette. Expect “distant ancient rites of dawn, village sounds recorded from bicycle baskets, ensemble street performances, and wedding party music echoing through the ballroom of an abandoned mansion”. Edition of 40 pro-dubbed / imprinted red tapes with a cover photo taken in Bospo Village, Battambang by the artist." no kings

secret birds

"Mind-altering drone and psychedelic noise journeys here by Brisbane, Queensland native D. Black aka Secret Birds, currently residing in Tokyo, who returns with his sophomore full-length Peace Forest later this month. The four-track cassette is a breathless exploration into meandering soundscapes made up of distorted guitar drones, heavy layers of synth and restless, tropical drum machine trances, somewhere between Sun Araw, High Wolf and Ducktails, according to the artist “inspired by night rides around Shibuya“. Hot and sultry these nights were, we assume. The tape is absolutely mesmerizing stuff from start to finish. Highly recommended." no fear of pop

joonatan elokuu

"The second album by Joonatan Elokuu reminds me even more of In Gowan Ring, singing minstrel-like songs in his own modest way, with a warm introspective expressive way of singing with two acoustic guitars and accordion, and with the addition of some second female voice (Helena Halla) here and there. Only after a few songs different arrangements occur, like some flute with echo on “Silk Road Sunrise”. Special to hear also is the “Born again with a hedgehog's heart” intro with a dialogue from a movie of someone seeking for birds/nature-like spiritual freedom. “Nancy” is expressed with more spoken word with warm ambient electric piano and synthesizer. More stretched in acoustic improvisation with harmonium, zither and sitar is “Like Christ and Osiris”. The last track concludes the album by adding whistling. Another good one from this new psych-folk artist. Released as a CDR in an envelope with some artwork". psychedelic-folk

rambling boys

"Keijo Virtanen, Jukka Nousiainen, Lauri Puttonen and Sami Virtanen join together to put a spin on the dust bowl ballads of Woody Guthrie. After two incredible lathe cuts, Rambling Boys finally throw down a full album of what were once simple road songs, now pulled apart at their roots and tossed into the basement to be jammed into something completely new and unstoppable. Heady rolling guitar licks, fuzzy harmonica wails and snapping drums drift in and out of each other, locking in perfectly only to split back into the mumbling open." cabin floor esoterica

higuma

"Over the past few years Higuma's Evan Caminiti (of Barn Owl) & Lisa McGee have slowly evolved their sound from shamanistic acoustic dirges into shimmering metallic blast-off hymns, hair raising eulogies to the cosmos. 'Pacific Fog Dreams' is a set of seven such songs, all beautifully distant and drenched in layers of earth toned echo, balanced in dream time between melodies and all out electric whitewash. Delayed strums hang in a beyond background, a ghost world of songs from some other place and time, channeled onto the hiss of a cassette tape to remind you. Caminiti's guitar is often on the verge of taking the whole thing down, sporadically billowing into colorful feedback, huge blocks of impenetrable sound. McGee's vocals are sometimes discovered, but just as distant smears, or riding the peaks, coaxing out phrases of hidden origin.. maybe singing of intimacy, memory, nature or magic." root strata

moss

"Moss is a live recording from Molly Berg, Olivia Block, Steve Roden and Stephen Vitiello. This was a midnight concert at the beautiful Trinity Cathedral in San Jose. ...As the set was entirely improvised, the billing really changed in our minds from being a duo with guests to becoming a quartet. The church itself was certainly inspiring, it’s dark wood and clean dry acoustics. There was a very small but dedicated audience.
“Moss” breathes like a living being lying down to sleep, a delicate wave of hushed field recordings, tape tracks and subtle electronics provides a bed for which Molly Berg’s clarinet and voice (joined at times by Steve Roden) ebb and sway, Steve Roden and Stephen Vitiello provide lap steel guitar while Olivia Block manipulates the tapes, field recordings and electronics. A perfect example of how four like-minded friends and musicians can come together at a moment’s notice and create, unrehearsed, a captivating and beautiful sonic landscape. The connection between them as artists is completely evident while at the same time disappearing into the background to allow the piece move like a singular body." 12k

gkfoes vjgoaf

"America's Sean Conrad has been able to channel quite a few very important vibes in Spirit Dance. Spirits obviously dance to this tape! Many slow raga-like grooves meet abstract sunny guitar and vocal rumble, when not intervened by ecstatic vocal bursts and ritual bells and cymbals. Moving back and forth, keeping things in balance Sean goes along a narrow path of calm self-reflection and observation, dancing to his own heartbeat, setting his mind at ease. "Every breath and every bow is a gesture of the soul". full of nothing

a hawk and a hacksaw

"following a series of albums exploring eastern european folk music influence that have thrilled indie and world audiences alike, albuquerque, new mexico's a hawk and a hacksaw present 'cervantine', their first release on their own new label, lm dupli-cation, a record that gloriously connects their deep fascination with the folk and gypsy groups of former yugoslavia, greece and romania with their actual home in the desert plains of the american southwest. the group's natural blend of diverse global musical styles with their indie rock background lends them the kind of cross-audience appeal enjoyed by bands including fools gold, beirut and calexico, while their strong sense of musicality and cultural context draws more left-field listeners to them as well. recorded live at their studio in albuquerque between two us tours, 'cervantine' is the vibrant sound of an american band whose geographical and cultural travels bear on their already distinctive music. the 20th century brought the influence of spanish and mexican music to eastern european gypsy folk, and cervantine celebrates the reflected resonance of this influence in modern-day new mexico. alongside the core duo of jeremy barnes and heather trost, the album features key contributions from the immensely talented hladowski siblings - stephanie (vocals) and her brother chris (bouzouki) - from bradford, england, via poland, who can be heard on album standouts 'mana thelo enan andra,' 'cervantine' and the turkish classic 'uskudar.' the original composition 'espanola kolo' probably best represents the spanish / mexican impression on serbian brass music that a hawk and a hacksaw have embraced - an homage to the extraordinary new mexico town of espanola and a yugoslav kolo dance, designed for long nights of drinking and dancing." rough trade
