morning jewel / josh burke / stella haze

josh burke ~ imagination part I, II & III (midnight star media/housecraft, 2009)

"warm synths drift beneath tape hiss, gliding along under the weight of sometimes as little as one tone in a manner not unlike the ultra spacious new age excursions of Dolphins into the Future. similar recording approach too it sounds, opting for the kind of "pretty as recorded cruddy" sound that Skaters love. alot of this stuff sounds like it's actually quite light and fluffy stuff, but it also sounds like all of that fluff is being played about three floors below you, so all you get is the skeleton of the sounds..." the ear-conditioned nightmare

stella haze ~ thaw (gift tapes, 2009)

"the transition of cold, cracked earth to a soil fit for promoting life energy, Stella Haze traverses seasons and dimensions. eeaving thick fields of synthesizer, Wurlitzer, and voice, the formation of a weightless aura that sifts through the air molecules like an eel through dark waters. this is Cristin Miller’s first as Stella Haze, a digression from her former work with avant folk-rock duo Emma Zunz. Thaw is a magical minimalist affair that leads it’s followers into eternal light, like the spirits of newly formed clouds awaiting their entrance into the evening skies." gift tapes

günter schlienz

"cooling drift over soft terrain; smooth modular ambient for inner voyages (Inspired by the book of Peter Michael Hamel.)"

million mists

"perma-flow blade runner of the jungle; karaoke synth solos navigating snail trails" gift tapes

"Jamie Potter’s music (Million Mists, Brother Raven, Father Sound) and video work often begins with thrift store castoffs as source material, with unwanted and undervalued synthesizers and vhs equipment taking the place of the comic books that seed his works on paper. He then proceeds to coax idiosyncratic, inharmonic spurts of data into compositions typically dictated by the confines of a semi-obsolete format, such as 2″ cassette tape. Through the intuitive process of improvisation and revision, Jamie imparts his trademark organic dynamism to a diverse array of materials, somehow always arriving at a vaguely biomorphic, self-similar end result with more than a hint of the uncanny. The ingredients might feel nostalgic, but the finished product is wholly other." translinguistic other

harpoon pole vault / orbless

"Jason E Anderson of Gift Tapes, Brother RavenSpare Death Icon and more lays out some killer vibes on the Micromoog, recorded direct to cassette for distinct elk fidelity." house of sun

"Ruin Machine is the third release from Orbless, the solo sonic explorations of Collin McKelvey. created entirely with modular synthesizers and analog delay and rhythm machine, Colin takes the listener on a slow journey through deep space. two side-long tracks usher the listener into a contemplative space where their imagination can bring up a multitude of scenarios. Ruin Machine was created with the idea of the man made objects  slowly decaying in orbit around the solar system." beach house

j. hanson

"J. Hanson’s Blood Orange is a mélange of rhythmic synthesized chanting and ethnic electronic doodles as equally playful as they are meditative. his creations envelop the senses, creating a gift russian dolled into the plastic and casing of the gift tapes vessel ~ a secret one will never know until they tear off the wrapping and place it in the tape deck. oh what a cruel and unusual pleasure they will find..." tiny mix tapes

"over the past few years, Josh Hanson has developed his own completely unique voice, crafting beautiful music with a Blacet modular synthesizer and tape loops. this is a collection of compositional ideas wound together to form unfamiliar terrestrial landscapes that feel as futuristic as they do ancient. taking inspiration from ’70s synth music and ethnic musics, New Ruined Maps travels through melodic passages, soft timbres and moments of complex rhythmic patterns like a lucid dream." draft

brother raven

"great new self-released cassette from this zoned Seattle duo. slow sunrises of keyboards married to wiggy 20th century avant electronics, the kind of fuzzy celestial melodies of ‘72 Sun Ra and a slow-burning atmosphere that is pure cyborg" volcanic tongue

"radient jungle experience colossal modulation" gift tapes

"excellent cassette on Lieven Martens’ label from a duo with a jones for the primitive electronica of 80s underground synth, electronics and tape music. at points they orbit the lonely sound of early Harmonia or even Mark McGuire but there’s an alien, homemade quality to the sonics that is extremely appealing. Lieven compares it to some of Colin Potter’s early work and that makes a lot of sense. one to get lost in." david keenan, volcanic tongue

"Brother Raven's music burbles and pulsates in a cosmic eternal now, unspooling fractals of clean-blooded analog-synth tones that ripple and disperse into that bright light filmmakers flash when characters cross from reality into dream/fantasy." dave segal, the stranger
