willie lane

"...Willie Lane remains one of the most unique string thinkers, forging links with mv & ee, Joshua Burkett, Steve Gunn and Grant Acker from Un, with whom he shares the Slurp Dogs duo. Lane has an odd, skewered vision of the potential for endlessly over-dubbed steel strings to open up new vectors of sound and thought, and here he lays down weird, repeat chord sequences and then bisects them with screaming lead guitar and odd, melancholy night-time movements that will have you pulling out Neil Young’s Dead Man soundtrack and Misato Minami’s 1971 side The Tropics. as with all of Lane’s material there’s a subtle humour in the titles, “Imaginary Labelmate”, “Spaghetti Eastern”, “Rare Psych For Wayne” but the overall atmosphere is lugubrious, haunted, seemingly bled straight to four-track in the early hours. indeed, the set almost feels like a Japanese cousin of Matthew Valentine’s experiments in Spectrasound, with a tone that matches the raging iconoclasm of Masayuki Takayanagi and Takashi Mizutani while wrapping the whole thing up in a form of supremely lonesome blues and hermetic tone poetry that has little parallel outside of some of the foggier Loren Connors material...." volcanic tongue

"this is a collection of songs written, more or less, in the late 1970s and early 1980s in New Haven; mostly songs that had never been recorded before. it was all done in one session. with some retakes. i had only recently stopped performing and still knew everything by heart." ed askew

"fragile and enticing late-night, bed-time and beyond, psychedelic folk music for those not-so-well-balanced people who can still appreciate beauty in its roughest forms." aural innovations

"...full of appalachia, psychedelia, and raga. the tracks are spectral and smokey, astral projections for an astral mind." killing time kills

"after languishing in obscurity for decades, the music of idiosyncratic singer-songwriter Ed Askew is finally getting the attention it deserves. "Ask The Unicorn", his 1968 debut album for esp-disk, has often been compared to the work of labelmates Pearls Before Swine. Askew's equally wonderful second album, Little Eyes, was recorded a few years later but remained unreleased until the De Stijl label pressed a limited edition lp in 2003. this year, they finally made it available on cd. although Askew once accompanied himself on a kind of Latin American soprano guitar called a tiple, carpal tunnel syndrome now prevents him from playing. For this live session, contemporary psychedelic folk artist Joshua Burkett plays the instrument for him." Hatch wfmu

joshua burkett - where's my hat (feather one's nest, 2007)

joshua burkett - life less lost (feather one's nest records 1998/spirit of orr 2003)

"Beam of folkaways passing tenements with bygone studio apartments as the lofts of the future awash in a microsecond of urban Om and the sparkly vastness of country mistery - a dragged in ray of tone we begin on the azure stylus of remembering. Effervescing bubbles of a lamp lit moon under an animal spirit sky for a moment screaming in absolute quietude of still night and waking to stained synapses trapped in the oxide of rails, gardens and the solitude breathing in the run off grooves of mushroom wood staves burning slowly with the ringing of nuthatch gorgeous in the synchronicity. His kind a loving time trapped in the red light, perfect when on. Furnished with strings and beads and love and Cosimo in his language the starry loneliness is perennial and that is all life less lost ever be, sipping in the universal ocean and returning a mistery of inmortality in the rear view mirror of memory smiling on a wavy scene tripped on capsules of beautiful sonic doors open and whispering wildcards of flowers and illusory prisms through his hushed towny cry of consciousness intimate with leaves, creatures and muted dirt honed through the jibba white love of grass horns and offered from his hand a brow of clouds fizzing on earth hidden rim bright as starfields, it is a pleasure to live here." - Matt Valentine
