windy & carl

"then valentines day 2011 was coming, and his gift to me was this cd of tracks he had done, all alone, and a lot of them new, just for me. i loved them, all of them. i played them all day every day for months. carl told me it was music just for me, and no one else would ever hear it. (...) it was a joy for me to be on this record, to be able to make a new record with the man i love. to have found, that even after the darkest of times, we are still in love, we are still incapable of living without each other, we are still 2 halves of the same being." windy

a winged victory for the sullen

"A Winged Victory For the Sullen is the first installment of the new collaboration between Stars of the Lid and The Dead Texan member Adam Wiltzie and composer Dustin OʼHalloran. The duo agreed to leave their normal home studio comfort zone and develop the recordings with the help of large acoustic spaces, and to hunt down a selection of 9ft grand pianos that had the ability to deliver extreme sonic low end. Other traditional instrumentation was used including string quartet, French horn, and bassoon, but always juxtaposed is the sound of drifting guitar washed melodies.
...The final result is seven landscapes of harmonic replicating ingemination. In “Requiem for the Static King Part 1″ they have taken the age old idea of a string quartet and then shot it out a cannon to reveal exquisite new levels of mellow bliss. Of the 13 minute track “Symphony Pathétique,” Wiltzie says “after almost 20 years of struggling to create interesting ambient drone music, I feel like I have finally figured out what I am doing”.
Guest musicians include Icelandic cellist Hildur Gudnadottir and violinist Peter Broderick. A Winged Victory is not a side project. This is the future of the late night record you have always dreamed of." brainwashed/kranky

bird show

"Ben Vida’s latest is hippie-tastic, a mellow trip replete with drum-circle beats, all-together-now vocals and a free, open vibe. It’s easy to imagine Vida and his colleagues (including labelmates Robert Lowe of Lichens and Greg Davis) sitting cross-legged in the woods, emitting sonic smoke signals as they stare at the sun—an image encouraged by the cover, which shows Vida’s collection of bells, tambourines, and pan flutes (he plays 25 instruments in total) atop a weathered oriental rug. It’d also be easy to call Bird Show nostalgic, but that would be wrong. On “Green Vines”, one of the few songs not named for the instruments used, Vida’s Terry Riley-style keyboard laps against the rattling percussion, creating soft waves for the vocals to happily ride. As curlicues of guitar drift away, the whole thing can start to feel almost too good, but don’t fight it: that’s just the track kicking in." paper thin walls

"...“Green Vines” is about the effect that certain places, physical settings, have on the senses. How being in the desert or deep in a woodland area can have an almost drug-like effect on you." ben vida

lichens - omns (kranky, 2007)

roy montgomery

"...Roy Montgomery writes on the inner sleeve of Temple IV that it was inspired by a trip to the Northern Guatemalan rain forest where he endured physical discomforts and attempted to come to terms with the death of a love. Though its nice to have a concrete description, those words are unnecessary. Temple IV is like an opera in a foreign language with no translation, where through the music alone, the listener is able to ascertain what the circumstances were, what the mood was and other background information... The lush songs on Temple IV are brimming with an aching sadness, violent anger and exhausting relief. This intensely beautiful album does not come as a surprise... the ravishing feedback on Temple IV expresses more than most words."

charalambides

town & country & bird show

Town & Country - Up Above (Thrill Jockey, 2006)

Pilz - [mp3]
Lightning Ghost - [mp3]
On the Beach - [mp3]

Bird Show es el proyecto en solitario de Ben Vida y Liz Payne, otra forma de expresarse muy similar a la de Town Country: 'Tracks are carved out of opiate'd chanting, disjunctive drum circles, synth meditation and prepared piano trance song. Vida's sonic explorations are embedded into tighter song structures, with a greater role given to vocals in the mix.'

boduf songs

"Boduf Songs is Mat Sweet, who lives in Southampton, England. He recorded some songs for kranky as demos in early 2005 at home with an acoustic guitar, some cymbals, violin bow, toy piano, manipulated field recordings, and a computer. With less than ideal equipment and under less than ideal conditions, he created songs with memorable melodies, artful arrangements and carefully placed effects that lend an air of surrealism to the album. The recordings made such an impact on kranky that we decided to release them as is rather than having Mat re-record the songs, and possibly lose any of the immediacy and intimacy that make them so engaging. Deceptively low key, Boduf Songs skirts between singer-songwriter, psychedelic, home recorder and folk modes, bringing an obtuse, angular minimalism to these forms. Listening to this music visions of a beautiful spring day in an English meadow come to mind. With death keeping a close and watchful eye from behind a nearby tree. Mat Sweet will be recording a new Boduf Songs album for kranky this summer and fall under more ideal recording conditions" kranky
