earthlings

dariush dolat-shahi / tim koh

"A friend recently copies me the 1985 Folkways release 'Dariush Dolat-Shahi - Electronic Music, Tar and Sehtar.' Dariush Dolat-shahi is an Iranian-American composer and instrumentalist on the tar, the traditional Persian lute. His compositions include electronic and instrumental music as well as music for traditional Persian instruments.
I included in the album folder a text file with a interview with him for a little more information. No info on this release though. Its pretty tripped out and the blend of Electronics, Tar/Sehtar, and ambient recordings is amazing!!! I have a feeling that he's using a Buchla for the electronics, a very rare cult synthesizer if you didn't already know. Highly Recommended!!!" - Fm Shades

james 'god' blackshaw

"Blackshaw draws as much inspiration from early religious music, South-Asian folk music and composers such as Arvo Part, Simeon Ten Holt, Steve Reich and Charlemagne Palestine as he does from John Fahey, Robbie Basho and the early Takoma Records roster, constantly breaking boundaries in what could be conceived as a somewhat limited medium. In his part improvised and part written songs, Blackshaw makes expert use of Eastern and Western scales, chord changes reminiscent of European classical music and incredibly intricate fingerpicking patterns to make a sound that is both challengingly minimalistic, yet warm and approachable to anybody who might hear it, with a rare sensitivity that conveys both immense beauty, hope and sadness" tompkins square

"I've been enamored with the fingerpicked style of guitar for quite a few years now and it always amazes me how such a similar technical style can yield so many varied undertones of emotion. For such a young player James Blackshaw seems to have really carved out a place for himself amongst his peers. His style is marked by a restrained beauty and calm wonderment that sometimes surpasses older players who give up style for intensity. Blackshaw's latest record The Cloud of Unknowing expounds upon his circular style of playing and fills each repetition with a sublime joy and comfortability with his instrument. Adding some extra percussive and orchestral bits to his sound, Blackshaw has created his most wondrous and achingly beautiful record yet, which considering some of the recordings he's produced in such a short time, really speaks to his ability. This record feels right for the coming summer; a calm lay in the grass pulling shapes from tattered clouds, the smell of childhood in your nose and the feel of playful wind on your ears..." raven sings the blues

"Transient Life In Twilight" es poesía, y no sólo por esas cuatro palabras bellamente colocadas. Y también "The Elk With Jade Eyes".

"Located in different corners of the world, central California, New Zealand, and Finland share rich ecologies. All three are heavily forested, and all three are influenced by prevailing warm coastal winds, creating a common cathedral of nature welcoming reclusion and spiritual introspection. It's natural then for this compilation of forest folk bands growing out of the Jeweled Antler collective to include artists from these three locations: The Blithe Sons from California, Pekko K”ppi from Finland, and Claypipe from New Zealand.

However, the word "compilation" for these three recordings is perhaps too strong. Their shared inspiration from the natural world has created such a strong musical affinity, and the community brought about by Jeweled Antler has created such a history of collaboration, support and enthusiasm between musicians that this record presents an undeniably cohesive spirit. This set of recordings should be considered as coming from some sort of telekinetic band. The environmental recordings (by Byram Abbott and Tony Endless) provide a resonant duration between each of the recordings, kind of like traveling from one place to the next.

The Blithe Sons is the duo of Loren Chasse (Coelacanth, Of, etc.) and Glenn Donaldson (Skygreen Leopards, Badgerlore, etc.), who also collaborate under the name Thuja with Rob Reger and Steven R. Smith. The duo combines Chasse's leanings towards tones and percussive textures with Donaldson's folk-inflected melodies to create textured but elegant hymns to the natural world.

Claypipe is the bush clad drone/folk duo of New Zealanders Antony Milton (PseudoArcana head and numerous solo projects) and Clayton Noone (CJA as well as a member of Armpit and Futurians). Recorded live in secret feral city corners and via 4 track cassettes mailed between the North and South Islands their sound ranges the ranges between sun-in-your-eyes pop and furtive battery driven uber-noise.

Pekko Kappi (also a member of Lau Nau and Paivansade) plays traditional Finnish-Karelian folk music. Kappi is known for his use of the unique primitive stringed instrument called the jouhikko (or horsehair lyre) and for the stunning intensity he is able to convey with just that instrument and his voice, bowing and scraping the violin-like instrument to create a whirlpool of gently and organically rough tones.

The Amazed Map is intended to be a sequel to Windswept Trees and Houses and Heat and Birds, released as limited edition CDRs on Jewelled Antler some years ago."music fellowship

hala strana

"Steven R. Smith began recording music under the Hala Strana moniker in 2002 as a way to further explore his interest in traditional Eastern European folk music, apart from his solo releases under his own name and collaborative work in Thuja, Mirza, and other Jewelled Antler creations. Heave the Gambrel Roof is Smith's fourth full length album under the Hala Strana name. The album is a return to the shorter, more song-based form of Fielding and Hala Strana and includes reworks of four traditional Albanian tunes as well as seven original tracks

As with all Hala Strana releases, Heave the Gambrel Roof contains a wide variety of instruments (many built by Smith himself) such as the hurdy gurdy, spike fiddle, gourd guitar, bowed baritone psaltery, bouzouki, xaphoon, and the more common electric guitar, organ, cello, and harmonium. The album includes musical contributions from Loren Chasse (Blithe Sons, Franciscan Hobbies, Of) on one track." music fellowship

"...Hala Strana is a vehicle for Smith to explore, cover, rework and reinterpret Eastern European folk music. ...The covers here, of which there are a handful, Smith makes his own, gorgeous bits of traditional strummy folk become mesmerizing and hypnotic, figures and melodies looped and repeated, sympathetic notes allowed to buzz and wash into one another. A few of the covers sound pretty straight, with just a tiny bit more buzz or drone, but a few are completely transformed, becoming extended atmospheric dreamscapes, like on "Wedding Of The Blind" which sounds like seventies Japanese psych drone ensemble Taj Mahal Travellers jamming with Jack Rose. Absolutely gorgeous." aquarius

chainsaw paws

chainsaw paws - this light (foxglove 2007)
"tennessee's chainsaw paws come at you from a million different directions. after a release on alamagator (not to mention numerous offshoots like broken tape choir, beesty, mild red sorrow, and more), "this light" is the bands most fully-realized album. deconstructed, whimsical pop with hooks galore build around varying stringed instruments, vocals, and percussion that, at times, brings to mind groups like animal collective. but this is catchy, surreal, and psychedelic all wrapped into one tight little ball. delightful in every way." foxglove
This Light es un disco alegre, vital, que me recuerda a unos Pássaro do Pomar (sí) menos soleados. a Matt Elliott, versión pastoral, concisa y casera, en"Yellow and Blue and Green" y "Mildeath", a Cursillistas ("May All of Our Troubles Be over Tomorrow"), a Animal Collective ("The Final Race"), a Yann Tiersen y Ennio Morricone ("A Beautiful Fire"), a Chris Bozzone y Vetiver ("Songbird"), a Greg Ashley ("I Miss You Very Much"), a A Hawk and a Hacksaw ("Every Scratched Out Eye"), a Beat Happening, Forest y The Incredible String Band ("Never Came to Quick"), o incluso a Madrid (""Letters to Lara").

wooden wand

wooden wand - more from the mountain 7'' (release the bats 2007)

"More From The Mountain features one of James Jackson Toth's final transmissions under the Wooden Wand moniker. Side A has been a live favorite for some time, while Side B's "Guru Femmes" is a home recording of a long-retired tune entirely exclusive to this release. Limited, hurry, etc"

burning star core

"Creeping drones, strange mutilated vocal incursions, and compositions full of unidentifiable sounds both acoustic and electronic. Another classic in sound exploration from the mind of Mr. C. Spencer Yeh. This is the sound of humanity looking into the depth of their soul searching for a reason to continue fighting the daily maze of homo sapien life. The three sisters on the front cover of this album all have the "mark of the devil." no fun productions
“...Blood Lightning is the record we’ve all been waiting for. It has all the Burning Star Core ingredients we’ve come to know, from the sawing violin megadrones to the vocal insanity. The krautrocking monsterjams and eerie vibes through weirded out spoken bits. But this album seems to have it all in the right places...9/10" foxy digitalis
"Brand new album from C Spencer Yeh and co is their darkest entry into post-avant hypnosis to date, with five tracks that build a palpable sweat of threat from glots of poetic throat flux into strung-out reflective electro drones and on through to the most malevolent low-register satanic narration over a curdling ocean of Industrial lava and delicately fried circuits that could almost be Takehisa Kosugi if he hadda dug Consumer Electronics, Nurse With Wound circa “I Was No Longer His Dominant” and the kinda opiated occult analgesia favoured by Mel Lyman, Charles Manson, Jhon Balance and Bobby Beausoleil. The fourth track “The Universe Is Designed To Break Your Mind” feels like the most perfect melding of “Bells”-era Ayler with the repeat skull-parting noise ecstasies of Sunroof et al. Heard a rumour that this was to be the last ever recording under the Burning Star Core moniker - but what a way to go. Reputedly the third part of the trilogy that included Three Sisters That Share An Eye and the recent Ultra Eczema LP, this is easily the best of the bunch. Features cover art depicting three sisters with “the mark of the devil” on them in a hard card gatefold sleeve. One of the most unique and ambitious releases of Yeh’s career to date, highly recommended." volcanic tongue

terracid

"Terracid aka Michael Donnelly returns with yet another solo album of his outback-fried psychedelic jamborees. Donnelly is extremely prolific, but that's a good thing for all of us. While he must be sacrificing something on the holy altar of the folk gods, he's surely not sacrificing quality for quantity. This is music that will lull you into a trance.

One thing I've been noticing about Donnelly's work, not only as Terracid but in Brothers of the Occult Sisterhood, Ffehro, and Soarwhole as well, is that you can really hear that he is inspired by his surroundings in rural Australia." foxy digitalis

"Please receive this carefully cooked porridge, the new untitled Kemialliset Ystävät full length album. Pulsating, radiant and turbocharged this music shares the groove of a junk pile AND a wild foal. It comes with the lovely smell of the chemical they spray on apple trees. It's a highly ambitious effort originally planned to become a defying message in a bottle, limited edition of one, addressed to the Man.
Kemialliset Ystävät has been rocking out for some time now and there is no end in sight. Without all the experiments of the past this record would not exist while there's still plenty of fresh perspective in the mix too. Listen to Roope drum his belly, Laura play tambura and Jaakko go berserk on a Chinese flute. Listen carefully. Lot of energy went into the mixing: million voices from friends are twisted into one hypnotic over-the-top sound textile that vibrates and grows to every direction resembling a living organism, a merry beast. Give it a hug and you will gain power, it is like shooting up Echinacea. Wrap it around you and tune in to the blizzard. Sit down and blast as loud as possible!" fonal
