corum

"Psychic Sounds is very pleased to announce the highly anticipated release of Corum's exotic trance score for his touring short film Beguiling Isles: Born of Earth's Torments.  Beautiful melodies waft in and out of your consciousness like a humid island ether. It's a travelogue, hypnotizing and also lulling. It's easy to fall under Corum's island spells producing sweaty aural excitement and imagining the "Specter of Polar Reversal", as described in the liner notes, twinkling it's eye before the volcanic explosion of horns, drums and keys lay down a lush rush of eerie tropical groove." psychic sounds

"This outfit has a distinctive middle-eastern flair, occupying the Interzone, known to play with dream machine, this time they had projections of burning incense, a cloaked figure. Jefferson played clarinet with delay, White Gourd sax and the same, with Corum laying down a Marrakesh flea-market beat, crunchy distorted tape beats, like Muslim Gauze in his prime. They brought the root down stomp, swaying like cobra charmers. The room was as full as i'd ever seen it, everyone was mesmerized. The group consciousness rayed and sparked like Quicksilver spray, and i was reminded, with fresh eyes" j's heaven

asio otus

"equipped with improvised acoustic recordings ~ electronically processed, sliced, looped and mixed ~ the Asio Otus begins its flight with the first shades of twilight to look for UFOs in the finnish sky and detect alien lifeforms. but the owls are not what they seem and we highly suspect Taneli Lehto and Jaakko Padatsu to be the otherworldly creatures they pretend to find in outer space. the far out Sunburned-Sternenmädchen-Sounds are giving proof that the duo ~ if not of alien nature itself ~ must have been abducted at least once. anyway: the truth is out there and the music’s on tape for now!" sicsic

foto: cosestesse

water lily jaguar

"a set of deep sea explorations. each starts with a simple direction, dissolving into warm tones and shimmering sounds. the calming lap/bubble of the ocean is never far away..." sound holes

" ...gorgeous, compelling and calming, relaxing and soothing, tape-blissy wonder of a release that gently rubs those super-sensitive spots like behind the temples or at the small of the back; exactly where you want a massage, but never do for yourself. slowly and softly, the music surrounds you as each of the four pieces starts with a synth droplet smack-dab in the middle of an electronic lake, letting simple motifs ebb outward in micro ripples as the listener begins to submerge into a deeper, warmer environment. this tape is easily the most beautiful music on any format I’ve had the chance to review yet in 2011, and it’s always a joy when one tape clicks to stop… because it’s just time to put the next one in. great for the last thing of the night or the first thing at dawn’s break. a gleaming, glittery gem." foxy digitalis

"epic double cassette of lo-fi new age synth warble, caught between Dolphins into the Future and Josh Burke, but with a unique enough approach to set it apart. I really like this project, and have enjoyed all the tapes I've heard." Norm Chambers (Panabrite)

"each note spirals up towards the surface and is there just long enough to catch some air. the audio links and travels through the sea in rhythmic motion. these sounds swell and sparkle, allowing the listener to speculate the extent of all that exists" sacred phrases

fallen axe / so. lung

"A simple glance at the tracklist of Moments Together reveals Fallen Axe to be the most romantic outlet for Frank “Hobo” Ouellette. With song titles like “Matinee Love”, “Old Letters I Kept”, and “Your Breath Revives Me”, it is obvious we aren’t dealing with the dimension-bending sci-fi fodder we are used to from the Cubeman. Anything but sappy, these are strange and formless bits of breezy summer psychedelia: warped and distorted echoes of good times, reverberating in a foggy, underwater garden of memory loss. How’s that for romantic?" zen effects

million mists

"perma-flow blade runner of the jungle; karaoke synth solos navigating snail trails" gift tapes

"Jamie Potter’s music (Million Mists, Brother Raven, Father Sound) and video work often begins with thrift store castoffs as source material, with unwanted and undervalued synthesizers and vhs equipment taking the place of the comic books that seed his works on paper. He then proceeds to coax idiosyncratic, inharmonic spurts of data into compositions typically dictated by the confines of a semi-obsolete format, such as 2″ cassette tape. Through the intuitive process of improvisation and revision, Jamie imparts his trademark organic dynamism to a diverse array of materials, somehow always arriving at a vaguely biomorphic, self-similar end result with more than a hint of the uncanny. The ingredients might feel nostalgic, but the finished product is wholly other." translinguistic other

sold out | listensweet dreams

"this is an exciting record replete with underwater tunes. the outer space & the deep blue sea collide into two sides of spellbinding adventures reminiscent to the early work of Oneohtrix Point Never, Jürgen Müller and Dolphins Into The Future. Panabrite works in the hazy, analog-synth-laden zone between kosmische drift and new age waft. He launches beatless symphonies of fibrillating, smeared whorls and drones that make you feel like the star of a weird nature documentary or a sci-fi blockbuster from 1977. Chambers excels at evoking both the intimate and the epic with his scrupulously wrought arpeggios and ostinatos." aguirre

“I made this album a little over two years ago. I was really into these underwater-themed library and soundtrack albums at the time, vintage guys like Francois de Roubaix, Sven Libaek, Armando Sciascia, Eugen Thomass; really evocative and moody stuf with a slightly off-kilter sensibility. I wanted to fuse this kind of feel with some more spacey electronic tones to create little vignettes. there’s definitely a kind of nostalgic trip going on here in a way, which I can’t deny. growing up in the 80′s a lot of those science films and documentaries featuring bloop-bleep type music really got ingrained in my mind, and to this day I look back at that aesthetic or idea for inspiration. I love aquatic-themes in music and films, etc… but what really appeals to me is the visual/aural aesthetic and trying to create an auditory travelogue.” norm chambers

david casper/michel redolfi/inoyama land/gunner møller pedersen

crystal waves ~ sonic waters

former selves / quiet evenings

"For those only familiar with Paul Skomsvold's hazy tapes of blissful drone, this disc may come as something of a surprise. Recorded prior to Many Moons, Build is the missing link between Paul's early experiments in lo-fi rock and his more recent excursions into pure sound. A perfect soundtrack for the final days of summer."

"Descend into the deeply personal sound of Quiet Evenings and experience music in both time and space. Gradually resurface on the sustained, perfumed bubble of Former Selves’ soporific harmonies" costellation tatsu

"slow motion nostalgia from Former Selves...soundtracks to lost love scenes, blurry 8mm film montages of carousel rides, memories of a beach sunset. highly accessible, emotive synth movements, that seem impossible to resist. the soundscape is thick, and full, but never crowded or overbearing. a beautiful confluence of warm layers and clean, crisp delicate sounds. there is an elegant simplicity in the four track c20. peaceful, honest compositions, absolutely meant to be enjoyed, and effortlessly successful. stunning physical product. retro futurist art, pro printed, pro dubbed limited to sixty copies. grab directly from Rotifer." guide me little tape

joshua abrams

joshua abrams ~ represencing (eremite, 2012)

"Represencing is an ethereal collection of static snapshots, spirited over sonic sand dunes by the textured tonal linger of Abramsguimbri (a traditional North African stringed instrument).

recorded at home, abrams again organizes small group statements around the resonant grooves of the guimbri with a unique & broadly assimilative compositional voice. sources from traditional musics to minimalism, jazz to krautrock, animate represencing, but Abrams is always grounded in the solidity of true working musicianship & he proves himself an artist fluent not just in styles but traditions.  abrams' guest musicians embrace his polyglot approach.  goaded by abrams to focus on a particular facet of their musical vocabularies, jeff parker & emmett kelly appear as finely contrasting rhythm guitarists, michael zerang gets virtuosic on a tambourine, david boykin devotes himself to altissimo long-tones & circular breathing, jason stein's bass clarinet, or, as with nicole mitchell's diaphanous choir of flute parts, function as landscape. the moondog-influenced "sungazer" is an aria for tomeka reid's spirited cello.  throughout the album gong rhythms, synthesizer "sub" bass, harmonium & organ return as unifying coloristic elements.  abrams likens the overall concept to "entering a forest from different directions", sandy bull's duets with billy higgins, don cherry, arnold dreyblatt, hamza el din, popul vuh, & pharaoh sanders as inspirations." eremite

dredd foole with mv & ee

"Blues Sermon With Congregation is basically a trio set, with Dredd Foole aka Dan Ireton on vocals and guitar backed by Matthew Valentine and Erika Elder in full-on Spectrasound head-fuck mode. Christina Carter also guests on one track, here credited as Christiina Madoniia.  Blues Sermon combines the kind of wood and wire vortices of Alan Silva and the Revolutionary Ensemble with those amazing post-Starsailor/Buckley vocal flights, keening in a high cosmo style that is just impossibly beautiful. With free folk the emphasis was always on the free part of the equation, an improvisatory stance that was lost on most beards but this is the absolute apex of that approach, think Robbie Basho’s spine-tingling take on “Salangadou” as played by Don Cherry’s Organic Music Society and with Pat Kilroy on form-destroying raga guitar and feedback visions. Matt & Erika generate some of their most F/X heavy sonic environments, Christina Carter ascends through visions of atonal vocal/guitar bliss and the trio rip through a take on Robert Johnson’s “Stones In My Pathway” that sounds like it is being broadcast over centuries via Sun Ra’s vision of tomorrow in yesterday. A stunning avant/folk/psych private press masterpiece in an edition of only 400 copies. Highest possible recommendation!" volcanic tongue

"Günter Schlienz is a quiet handed modular scientist, building his own instruments to create quality cosmic sounds. but we won’t spill the beans about the technical details and the specific process it took to cook up this high octane ambient music. all we are allowed to share ist that it’s all about Reel-To-Reel and Echos n’ Delay and Modular Synthesizers ~ but the exact recipe’s locked up in a secret Hobbykeller-Laboratory located somewhere unknown in Stuttgart. all you can do is: get some of Günter’s sonic narcotics, plug in your headphones and travel space without leaving the comfort zone of your couch!" sicsic

m. sage

"with Music For Interior Shadows, Fort Collins-based artist Matthew Sage focuses on what’s missing. while sonically inspired by the recent lost memories of The Caretaker, Sage’s real thread to pull came after visiting Dan Flavin’s light sculpture exhibit at the MoMA last month in New York City. He was particularly moved by the way it utilized the space between physical elements to create composition, not the light fixtures themselves he explains, but the shadows they cast. upon returning home, Sage dove into a stack of old records with the idea of finding minimal chunks of sound and turning them into absent compositions. what resulted is a pure and tragic, era-bending experience." stadiums & shrines
