deep magic & mohave triangles

"final release for Mohave Triangles & probably the last release of Deep Magic as well. this one was in the works for quite some time; so long that it has become a portal into the past, even better though a chance to once again come full circle.

Diatom Bath has been slowly churning the waters for some time and with this release brings the end of these projects up to the surface & really pulls into question the idea of progression. most importantly pushing forth the feeling to linger a little longer. to bath in this now. sit in the meadow and watch this sun set today on these grasses and these flowers & these companions." tomentosa

deep magic

"the solo project for current Sun Araw live band member Alex Gray, Deep Magic’s work has tended towards a meditative ambient realm, crafting a cosmic sound as a sort of calm and organic grandeur that recalls Popol Vuh’. indeed like Popol Vuh, pursuit of a kind of spiritual grace has proven to be the measure at the heart of Deep Magic. Reflections of Most Forgotten Love finds a new urgency, an ever-shifting puzzle of sound breathing vital new life into Gray’s lyrical vision. dynamic and unrelenting yet somehow beautifully spacious and patient in its unfolding, this epic work thrives on equal parts pulse and poise, an essence held within a thrilling multiplicity of ideas. skittish techno, rolling pianos, warm pedal steel, foggy, dub drifts and microscopic sonics play out a hypnotic movement of moods with magnetic compulsion. throughout its stirring, blissful way, intimacy is its keynote. as the title suggests, this is an album of emotively raw presence with a singular take on solitude as a many splendoured thing." preservation

"...an ethereal ride into experimentation and meditative tones. Brighter Days sets a tone for a very cosmic album where abstraction of majestic key tones drip into liquid form over field recordings, transfixing synth and other odd sources of sound. It’s a slow evolving voyage that is minimally designed but has a wealth of sonic color pulsing in every direction and in every measure. Music this delicate yet deep in resonance and texture grabs us on first listen and puts us in a really relaxed mood." deep tapes

water lily jaguar / deep magic

"deep tapes no. 6. 30 minute, blissful voyages from both deep magic & water lily jaguar (formerly dream safari). deep magic’s side is a warm, drifting journey through a cleansing & relaxing vision forest; entering this vision in a sweaty, rhythmic zone, going deeper and deeper until emptying out into repetitious, contemplative textures. water lily jaguar guides us through a sea of changing, chiming tones; undulating & breathing along with your body, vibrating & moving until the very end. limited to 25 copies w/ full color, double sided j-cards designed by alex."

deep magic

"A delicate nuance of organic phrasing; Alex Gray has been churning out a mysteriously attractive and impressive ambient catalogue for the past few years. 2012 has been relatively silent for the project, until now. Housecraft is proud to present Deep Magic's first vinyl edition. All new, all now. Full color jackets, stamped white labels. Mastered by Sean McCann." housecraft

"organic soundscape of textural harmony"

"installment seventeen features Alex Gray, aka Deep Magic, explore sound collages of euphoric instrumentation and vocal tone. Gray's preferred cassette medium has seen releases on Not Not Fun Records, Moon Glyph, and his own Moon Tapes, where he correlates a beautiful audio/visual aesthetic. a member of psychedelic outfit Sun Araw, Gray describes the piece as "weird garage stuff time stretched with spoken word by yours truly, all processed strangely..." colourful storm

olympus mons

"olympus mons is a mystery duo, the dream folk project of alex gray (deep magic), who is currenlty melting minds as a member of the sun araw tropical-psych team. reflections of bliss lake is primitive instrumental communication between harmonium, synths, guitar and driftwood xylophone, a beautiful exploration of sun~soaked textures swirling and flowing in waves of synths, fingerpicked guitar and keyboards. It will leave you gazing for stars, even as the sun beats down on your face." deep tapes

deep magic

"Deep Magic is an ascent of vibrating dreams.  A reverence for the past.  Family as honor and narrative bliss.  Spun webs of high wet dew.  Deep Magic is archaic spirit hymns.  Healing music." goldtimers tapes

"...“Ocean Breaths 1″  by Deep Magic is one of the most aptly titled songs I’ve heard in a while. Its nine-and-a-half minute run takes us on a shoegazing journey colored by bells, shakers, and the sound of slow, deep breaths. If you’ve been running around town, and have somehow forgotten to breathe, this meditative track will remind you. The visuals, which Gray produced on his own, are the sort of ethereal psychedelic fare. We’re shown scenes of the African animals in the plains, layered over images of Ocean predators... the deep focus on nature here works perfectly for this cleansing, zen track." visitation rites

deep magic

"sky haze was crafted to be the aural equivalent to laying on a grassy hill & staring up at the sky on a sunny day; letting the clouds, atmospheric artifacts & your eye begin to interact to create shapes & textures, both familiar and foreign. why is the sky blue? what is blue?" alex gray / deep magic

pine smoke lodge / deep magic

"Pine Smoke Lodge takes the listener deep in the woodlands, where moon light peaks, abated, through the old-growth trees while glistening sounds of bells, chimes and percussion lead the way. the whispers help keep the listener on the path, where he quickly slips into reverie.

Deep Magic keeps the ears at ease with subtle, layered hums and sounds of nature. A constant underlying whir, comes in and out of focus, providing continuity while more layers build up." sacred phrases

dreamcolour

"If there is one group that has emerged from 2009 which best embodies the Future, in our mind it would be California’s Dreamcolour. We were hooked ever since first checking their righteous live actions, their early cdr & taped treats, and their uncontainable offerings of jazz and drone’s most mystical sides. ‘Inner Worship’ finds this intrepid tribe bloomed out to a 9-piece at times, shooting for nothing less than Sacredelica in the raw. Yes, an entirely new genre seems ripe for carving here after one gets wet with this hour long wave. Dreamcolour operates with such an impressively cohesive front that they take the meaning of “unity through sound” to the next fractal notch. The sweaty saxophone bop, orbital viola lines, and holy hollers of Side A impressively distill to a pinpoint of mass mind mantra on Side B. Like hearing all individual parts of an explosion reach their expressive boundaries and then implode into a singular, refined meditation. When these sun-risen modes of the Inner are visited here (and that’s quite often) don’t be surprised if you find yourself grabbing the nearest instrument at hand, becoming a temporary 10th member of Dreamcolour, and worshiping right along. Limited special edition of 100 pro-dubbed & imprinted c60 tapes with double-sided color art in vinyl album." -stunned

pocahaunted

"After a six-month hiatus, a complete line-up overhaul, and a full year-plus of only playing shows and writing songs and amassing totemic objects, finally Pocahaunted return to the recorded realm with their first album since 2008. Time flies when yr having not not fun and all that. Make It Real collects seven of the band’s 2009 live staples for a 40-minute-ish collage of basement body music, garage dub damage, outsider funkadelic sprawl, voodoo rhythm workouts, duo femme soul vocal dynamics, dripping gold sweat, and dream fulfillment. Recorded barefoot and shirtless and direct to tape at Green Machine Studio in summer ’09 by M. Geddes Gengras and featuring guest bamboo sax by jazzmaster Alex Gray (of Dreamcolour/Deep Magic) and mastered by James Plotkin. Black vinyl LPs in jackets with warped LA post-Parliament utopia artwork by vision wizard Spencer Longo" not not fun

dreamcolour

"Recorded at The Barn in Ojai, CA by Dreamcolour. Intermission for Triangle Theories is full of trip inducing sounds. Guests include: Natalie Alyse, Teodora Nikolova, Betsy Sue and Bryn (tapdancing!). Blood Quantum starts the album with a chugging tribal beat giving way to a wave of free-form sounds, fading directly into Zoned, a tap dance/sax duo fades into a free-improv session complete with multi-drum sensory overload. Cover design by Rita Sue" dreamcolour

dreamcolour

"A blues/folk/soul inspired combination of improvised sessions. Natalie Alyse lends her lovely voice to assorted grooves, Robert Magill adds some death-folk and the rest weave a psychedelic soul."

"Dreamcolour reflects a collective of musicians from Ventura County, California. The concept is to heal and lift the spirits and souls of human beings from all walks of life, with the fiery expression of collective free improvisation. We aim to bring back the trance-inducing vibrations, frequencies and rhythms used by the ancient shamans and spiritual healers of the past, but also to experiment with and incorporate the scientific advances of the present and future, relating music as a direct pathway to the human spirit and as a healing force in the universe." dreamcolour
