music for mimosa pudica & codariocalyx

david edren ~ music for mimosa pudica & codariocalyx
(kankyo records, 2023 reissue)

"in the making of this album, david erden was influenced by mort garson, known for his plant music, and the film "the secret life of plants" and jack mitsch's documentary "mind of plants," among others, and he sprouted kodalyocalyx and mimosa pudica (tussock) seeds and documented their growth. this work, based on these observations and experiences, is a fresh ambient that gives a bird's-eye view of a small, lovely, boxy world and the activities of these plants with their mysterious moving properties" ~ kankyo records

ana has already posted this album when it originally came out on CD (8 years ago!) accompanying a book and now it sees a reissue on cassette with a beautiful booklet at this great japanese label/store run by h. takahashi.

music for plants seems to establish itself as a standalone genre already, with its roots being as deep as Mort Garson's famous Plantasia. this genre assumes that plants enjoy simplistic/minimalist and playful analog synth sounds and it's hard to tell if there's hard evidence to that or it's because Plantasia sounded that way ~ probably a mixture of both. plants do seem to react better to the pure tones rather than complex polyphony but there's clearly not enough studies on that. though, in case of this cassette it's more closer to the reality, as David Edren actually played his music sketches to two plants known for their sensitivity to movement and touch, including the movement of air. once again it's up to human's interpretation whether plants liked those sounds or not, but going by intuition it is possible (i believe) to draw an outline. in the end, David tells in the interview that with such music what's more important is to positively affect not the plants themselves but our relationship with them. ~ piedpaper (tape_stuff)

david edren

"When Sigrid Volders & Narelle Dore asked me to make a musical mix for the presentation of their project "Earth.Rope.Pot.Plant", i immediately thought of the "Plantasia" album by Mort Garson, who is one of my favourite electronic composers. Little did i know, i soon discovered, although truly amazing, it is just one of many plant-related albums. Roger Roger, that other pioneer of electronic library music, made "De La Musique et Des Secrets Pour Enchanter vos Plantes" in 1978, a remarkable album which, like the Mort Garson album, also included a booklet with enchanting text and pictures. For me, discovering more and more, it all began to form into this greater spiral of interest. I saw the film "The Secret Life Of Plants" and this documentary called "Mind Of Plants" by Jacques Mitsch (Arte 2009).

After which i immediately obtained some codariocalyx and mimosa pudica seeds; both known as the dancing and sensitive plants respectively. I really wanted to start growing these plants myself. When the first seedlings popped up, in my head a plan began to grow. You get emotionally attached to plants, watering them at specific times and taking care of them every day; something that was new to me, really. After the codario was already grown quite a bit, i started placing a little speaker next to it and play it gentle electronic sounds. The littlest leaves would start twitching and turning right after these waves of sound would come out of the speaker. As for the mimosa pudica, it was rather obvious from the beginning this was a very sensitive being; The slightest touch or breeze would set off it's receptors, folding up it's leaves one by one and even branches collapsing towards it's roots. I was mesmerized! As an ode to these two botanical beings, i decided to make sounds which are gathered here on the attached cd. Enjoy." David Edren / DSR Lines

"this is a further journey into the electronic style I developed in “El Telonero” but this time with a darker and more urban feel. I wanted to evoke a certain Carpenteresque-sci-fi vibe with the sounds, a sort of ode/lament to modern and futuristic cities and their people, bathed in esoteric symbolism, ready for utter doom. so yeah, the dudes from Smeltkop (hit them up on fb as well) decided to put it out on tape and in 100 copies with some very nice silkscreened covers. order it from them, because I already gave all of mine away…" ernesto gonzález

"the second tape that we'll be releasing that night is DSR Lines ~ Venndiagram. DSR Lines is the modular synth project of David Edren, also known as the big boss of the antwerp based Hare Akedod label. DSR Lines are audiological explorations." smeltkop

DSRlines
