aunque últimamente casi no escribo en el blog sí que escucho todos y cada uno de los discos que me envían en esos emails sin respuesta, las cintas que me llegan a casa de vez en cuando (pocas cosas me hacen tanta ilusión, con permiso de los paquetes caracoludos, que la caja de madera que envuelve 'siempre hay segundas oportunidades en las montañas' de Lake Mary, editada con mucho mimo en Planted Tapes). dentro hay una nota escrita con un lápiz de varios colores: 'i hope you enjoy the music for many years to come'. qué puedo decir. es un alivio saber que, aunque siga faltando espacio para tanta música, siempre nos quedarán los terapéuticos recopis a modo de 'gracias' para hacer inventario y sentirse menos desastre. recopis que siempre servirán de excusa para hablar tantas veces como sea necesario de Günter Schlienz, de 'humble', tan modular y bonita que desearías escucharla una y otra vez, en bucle hasta el infinito y luego otra vez más hasta que fuera la única canción de este recopilatorio. 

'levitación' es ahora mismo mi canción favorita de Oliwa. las guitarras de Lake Mary transmiten tanta emoción oklahoma soul que me quedo muda, esa que en teoría debería transmitirme el fingerpicking de Daniel Bachman y Glen Jones.  hay muchos sellos y muchas hornadas que nos ilusionan (la de Rainbow Pyramid o Aquae, que es en realidad un complemento más acuoso si cabe de Exo Tapes), y muchas canciones que se quedan fuera, como la preciosísima 'blue highways' de Marcus Eads, una mezcla entre el sonido oceánico de Mark McGuire, Matt Mondanile y el calypso, esa combinación dulce en la que siempre hace buen tiempo y que me recuerda a 'saturday' de Black Eagle Child, que es, como dice rafa, veranil a tope. también 'archipelago' de Madalyn Merkey y cualquiera de Spencer Clark, los verdaderos herederos de Jon Hassell. y una vez más gracias a todos esos mixtapes-clima-de otro mundo y a las recomendaciones aisladas de Toys and Techniques, Sounds of the Dawn, Steve Targo y árbore (fwy! es music for freeways, mil veces sí). ¡chin chin!

qué dos cintas tan tan tan bonitas. cintas que un día escuchas y por lo que sea no captan toda tu atención. cintas a las que vuelves un día como hoy y caes rendida. Past Utopia es Carter Mullin de Reedbeds y qué más puedo decir. todo en él es otoño, domingo y melancolía. cada disco suyo, con su juego de encajes múltiples, es otro mundo, otra forma de entender y crear ambientes con la guitarra. podría darse un aire al Eno de los aeropuertos y los alunizajes que se adivina tras esa amalgama de notas de guitarra en bucle, o a los discos siempre recurrentes de Library Music... pero no es lo mismo. él es él. único, abstracto y tan joven y lleno de talento que es imposible no admirarlo y no salir de tu asombro. 

Carter Mullin hace del ambient la más fantástica de las evasiones, un lugar seguro y confortable. guitarras que aparecen y desaparecen y ruidos electrónicos de teclado que se cuelan y no se sabe muy bien si están por debajo o por encima de las guitarras. arpegios circulares que aparentemente no conducen a ninguna parte. paso a paso, maravilla tras maravilla,  con Carter me pasa un poco lo mismo que con Shep and Me. viendo la poca repercusión que tienen, a veces pienso que lo mío con ellos es un poco desmesurado. pero de repente aparece una nueva cinta y sigo en mis trece. ese sonido siempre único que puedes relacionar con muchas otras cosas pero que al final no tiene parangón. el clima de climas, inequívoco. las mismas palabras podría decirlas para la preciosísima música de Venn Rain. es tan parecido el clima de su música a Past Utopia en este split que cuesta distinguir dónde empieza uno y acaba otro. la conexión es indescriptible, tanto que no puedes evitar pensar que las guitarras-teclado de Carter y los sintetizadores de Jimmy estaban destinados a encontrarse. y que ojalá vengan muchas más colaboraciones como ésta. 'orinoco' es tan dulce y bonita como su propio nombre indica. 

y casi me ovido del split de Water Lily Jaguar y Past Utopia. o cómo construir canciones a partir de esbozos rítmicos, loops de agua y notas en forma de volutas. dos canciones acuáticas y abstractas (la de Past Utopia se titula 'cama de agua') que aún durando casi veinte minutos cada una te dejan con la miel en los labios. minimalismo y esencia. un  minimalismo que, paradójicamente, lo llena todo. no sé, viva la música orgánica y pequeñita, las cintas de cassette y los sellos con duende y personalidad.

¿qué puedo decir, aunque solamente sea escuchando la primera canción de 'basement grotto', 'elegy by heavy eyelids'? que hace tiempo que Reedbeds es una debilidad, que aunque hoy luzca un sol radiante, su música siempre la relacionaré con el otoño o un con día lluvioso de verano, o con esa portada tan extraña y surrealista de Moonassi. que supera en emoción a 'canary morning', que Carter Mullin es un alien adorable que no creo que tenga más de dieciocho años y que es una suerte vivir en su mismo planeta. y que si tuviera un sello querría editárselo todo. desde el título, 'basement grotto' habla de cuevas marinas de color azul en el sótano de la imaginación, nos predispone para un ambiente especialmente reflexivo y marino en un disco que puede parecer distinto a lo que había hecho hasta ahora pero que en el fondo es muy parecido. ahí están las guitarras y los teclados moviéndose en círculos y a ritmo pausado y esa forma ya tan familiar de condensar y plasmar sensaciones, ambientes, recuerdos de recuerdos, de bocetar más que pintar, de empezar despacito para convertirse, tras varios días sonando, en mi disco favorito de Reedbeds. me emociona el runrún y las burbujas de 'reverie sheep', las pizpiretas notas de guitarra de 'your hand in mind', las repeticiones, los loops, la tristeza de 'please leave me here' y 'the rain comes whenever i wish', el ritmo danzarín tan Black Eagle Child de 'windowsill', cómo se retuercen las cuerdas de una barca que se balancea sobre el agua en 'bedside' mientras suena algo muy dulce que parece gamelan, al más puro estilo 'lone voyager' de los delfines, la intro de 'petal steel' que por alguna razón me hace pensar en 'djed' de Tortoise, la belleza indescriptible de 'refrain' para decir adiós tras diez canciones que duran un suspiro y que, aunque suena a tópico y como siempre ocurre con los discos de Reedbeds, te impulsan a darle al play una y otra vez, siempre tan cortitos y acogedores.

cuántas veces habremos dicho 'un disco del que es imposible salir'...algo que siempre me pasa con la música de carter mullin, jovencísimo músico con cara de niño bueno y asombroso talento que, como nuestro arbolindo, comunica con su guitarra algo que va más allá de simples notas musicales. 'fervent pitches' se compone de cinco largas piezas instrumentales, siempre a la deriva, en las que destaca por encima de todo su profundidad emocional, un auténtico regalo que carter ha puesto en su página de soundcloud para que podamos descargar gratuitamente. junto a canary morning, su disco más melancólico y minimalista...y por ello también mi favorito. una guitarra límpida y cristalina con apenas reverberaciones que revolotea tímidamente sobre el colchón de drones más mullido que puedas imaginar, ese clima inexplicable que me hace pensar en loren connors cuando acompañaba a kath bloom. cinco nanas de agua que te arrullan y transportan a un paisaje concreto, ése formado por frondosos lechos de juncos, plantas acuáticas especiales que se utilizan para purificar el agua, la más apropiada definición de la música de reedbeds

"...The six untitled tracks of G’Morning Gomorrah oscillate between pastoral lo-fi guitar improvisations (with field recordings) in the style of Jewelled Antler roster (especially Loren Chasse) or the slow jams of Thoughts on Air and slowly evolving synthesizer-based drone pieces in the style of early Jeff Witscher (think Marble Sky at its most dronish). The fourth track gives a slightly creepy rendition of musique concrete with old song samples mangled beyond recognition, reduced to a set of droning ghost choirs, suddenly coming into existence and fading just as abrubtly. The last, longest track embodies the albums “ear to the ground” approach, enveloping the gentle synth notes with quiet hum, like a quiet wind going through the forest.

Reedbeds’ album, although extremely limited and not as “official” as other releases, offers a relaxing journey through a variety of aesthetics and might be an interesting link between the guitar-based improvisational ambience and the synth drone scene..." weed temple

"...being an untrained and inexperienced guitar player, i’m often shaky and weary of stumbling upon sour notes and accidents like that. I avoid writing ideas down or memorizing them because they’re bound to either sound completely different or fall apart on record. Finding time to record is impulsive, and rarely am i comfortable, though relieved and fulfilled afterward. I’m a morning person, but only so if outside is looking dreary or it’s from around 4-6 am.
