lieven martens moana

"Two conceptual compositions.

~ Os Canais ~

Os Canais sprouted on a boat, while wavering inside an old canal system. Inside the memento of the hearth of altepepl Tenochtitlan. Where we dressed ourselves in the highstrung robes of history. And subconsciously warbled a symbolic counterpoint to flashes of the boiling torso being the current Ciudad De Mexico. And afterwards, our exhaled alphabet left sightless traces full of meaning. Like the diagrams in the sand, peering after a dance of the Judwalis. This collage is the ambiance which existed during an hour long interview for a documentary on Wietske Van Gils and myself, by Patrick Danse. These are the invisible traces of our motions, and our ideas, in between the words.

~ The Bird Sings (Variations) ~

The bird / mimicks the wind / The filter sings a fowl
And there is an a, a b and a c / all communed, in expectancy
Inside this magnetic tape / der Vogel singt" lieven martens moana

orphan fairytale

"second cassette we've put out by this girl,... 'Neverending Waves' is a reissue of a recent ultra-limited tour cdr by Eva Van Deuren. the album heads off with a beautiful potion of C.G.J. approved subconscious mood channelings made out of ideas taken from Javanese Court Gamelan music. after about seven minutes, the tones are shifting out into a lengthy, triple chapter, melancholic evocation of some sort of "Aguirre Opening Scene" style lushness. beautiful and endless..." cetacean nation cassettes

"Eva Van Deuren makes beautifully simplistic music using toys, sampling keyboards, vocals and electronics and Neverending Waves is one of her most ambitious sets, with music inspired by Javanese Gamelan and Popol Vuh’s soundtrack to Aguirre. on Lieven Martens of Dolphins Into The Future’s own imprint." volcanic tongue

lieven martens moana

"Lieven Martens Moana’s first album under his birth name marks an important shift in his oeuvre. while still indebted to the universe created under his moniker Dolphins Into The Future, ‘Music From The Guardhouse’ shows the Artist reaching the shores of his mental island, fully matured. this is where a new journey begins, a musical research program within the ‘composer genre’." kraak

"here’s an LP from the man formerly known as Dolphins Into The Future, Lieven Martens Moana, a mixture of concretey field-recorded soundscapes, tape hiss, wibbly analogue synth tomfoolery and occasional spoken commentary which seems to be from Moana himself. on the first side alone we have a lengthy passage of hiss and field recordings and sporadic piano tinkles, followed by a wibbly midi-synth passage with abstract, brightly layered synths plinking and plonking in a chaotic yet relaxing manner which brings to mind the BBC Radiophonic Workshop and Vernon Elliott’s magical score from ‘The Clangers’, finishing on a field recorded beach scene with weirdly sped-up bird calls which sound totally alien. over on the other side is a single long track ‘As Falesias’, which opens with dramatic soundtracky neoclassicism before delving into plangent analogue soundscapery with a sinister edge, with lots of swelling, quavering drones and continued subtle orchestral touches which sound like they’ve been beamed in from the 1950s. It’s a weird alien nostalgic excursion which will confuse and relax you." norman records

"computer music b/w electronic music. two side long sonatas. these two compositions sound vaguely like the next cassette in this list, yet unlike "Two Colours... " , this release is truly composed and more sparsely excecuted. i've studied for years, for years.... (ah ah ah) the a side is a midi tracking of the life under the Umbrella Pine the b side is a personal tracking of the sensual movements of The Island in classical music. this is the first official release under my own name. (c.q. Dolphins Into The Future 2007 - 2012)"

"fieldrecordings and writings from the Gulf Stream. i little study on observational writing and impressionistic field recording, an evocation of both the sunset and the sunrise in this glorious Stream Of Consciousness. sounds of rain, waves touching the harbor quay, many birds, farmers in their trucks, the surf, winds, branches, breakers, dew, chanticleers, dogs, crickets, etc. counterpointed w/ writings about all these and much more." lieven moana

"so here it is. a final salute to ur days of love and research on the Açores archipelago. a final collection of text and sound, collected at our then temporary homes. the Isles of Pico and Flores. these sounds are compiled and mixed as being sounds you would hear in a (day) dream. by means that every extant detail is amplified, enlarged. and all the lenghts are altered for the internal dream logic. as being the listener through the looking glass. these sounds are definitly not meant as being the collected participants in a contest. a contest of recordings the most weirdest, strangest sound in nature. i leave this game upto the more materialistic either luxurious minds in field recordings. "to each one his own zone", as Spence Clark would put it." lieven moana

"on demand: a small extra run of this extremely nice historical recording. two lovely minimal compositions, recorded in 1982 by this Belgian prog / jazz band, for the Samuel Beckett play "Spel". a soft mix of guitars and synth using the memory moog, korg sigma and fender strato. recorded on a fostex tape recorder. originally released on Hara Productions in 1983 as "Kandahar: Spel - Samuel Beckett" on cassette. (first edition of 150 copies in yellow covers. second edition of 50 copies in grey covers. out of print!)" edições cetacean nation communications

"weird soundtrack reissue from Lieven Martens of Dolphins Into The Future’s imprint, two minimal compositions recorded in 1982 by this progressive Belgian group as a soundtrack to Samuel Beckett’s play Spel. guitar, synth and percussion... " volcanic tongue

dolphins into the future

"Dolphins into the Future is one Lieven Martens, a Belgian currently living in the Azores, who has since 2007 steadily released a number of albums, EP’s, 7”s and tapes on a variety of hip and homespun labels. 28th March sees the long-awaited CD release of Dolphins into the Future’s acclaimed cult 2009 LP ‘…On Sea-Faring Isolation’, an album previously released on cassette by Martens’ own label, Cetacean Nation, and on vinyl by Not Not Fun. In addition to the original tracklisting, the Fonal re-issue includes a 15 minute bonus track ‘Various Possible Notes and Timbres of the Mental Unit Molecule’, recorded in 2011 on Okapoka Island. ...Dolphin’s vision is as smudged and somnambulant, but very much of itself. Amorphous and carefully framed, Martens’ sound landscapes place field recordings and lo-fi instrumentation on a democratic plane, to create one seamless mass of bubbling percussive flow. But if Martens taps into a pool of tropical references, such influences are relayed from an unashamedly outside perspective, a deliberate refraction of nature, a re-imagined idyll, that shows him to be as close in spirit to the Romantics, or perhaps even film maker Jean Painlevé’s surreal take on aquatic life." fonal

lieven moana

"a new composition using only field recordings. this composition is a poem. a poem of symbolical sounds. sounds, which are made by various invisible residents. representing signals, which haul a mysterious language. a flux of information, pattered by the grand Dorsal Meso-Atlântica. that magical, giant blowhole. which releases minute sprouts. which produces the notes, rhythms and timbres of an orchestrated piece.... the hot water, as being its conductor. sounds recorded on location at Ilha Do São Miguel and Ilha Das Flores, Açores. composed, mixed and recorded at Cetacean Nation Studios, Antwerp, Belgium." cetacean nation communications

"A Night's Creativity. A Parroted Companions guided tour to the most Romantic details of a Jungle's sensbility. Imagine the elements of your most recent landscaped vision coming to life and allowing you to witness a hearts perception of the natural world. Olde English Spelling Bee and Pacific City Sound Visions invite the listener to experience the first Studio album in Pacific City's history! Featuring James Ferraro as Rocco Martini, Lieven Martens of Dolphins Into the Future, and Eva Van Deuren of Orphan Fairytale; Playing the most exotic keyboard melodies this side of a Parrots hotly lit Plumage. This album is the first in series of Romantic Audio recordings that will later include the titles: "Make Mine, Macaw" and "The Garnet Tucan". Do enjoy the excitement of this one of kind journey to Pacific City's Nightlife and relax your mind's physical limitations...." olde english spelling bee

dolphins into the future

"limited reissue of the two Voyage cassettes, previously released on Skulls Of Heaven and Pacific City. all tracks are remasterd and some are remixed and re-editted."

brother raven

"great new self-released cassette from this zoned Seattle duo. slow sunrises of keyboards married to wiggy 20th century avant electronics, the kind of fuzzy celestial melodies of ‘72 Sun Ra and a slow-burning atmosphere that is pure cyborg" volcanic tongue

"radient jungle experience colossal modulation" gift tapes

"excellent cassette on Lieven Martens’ label from a duo with a jones for the primitive electronica of 80s underground synth, electronics and tape music. at points they orbit the lonely sound of early Harmonia or even Mark McGuire but there’s an alien, homemade quality to the sonics that is extremely appealing. Lieven compares it to some of Colin Potter’s early work and that makes a lot of sense. one to get lost in." david keenan, volcanic tongue

"Brother Raven's music burbles and pulsates in a cosmic eternal now, unspooling fractals of clean-blooded analog-synth tones that ripple and disperse into that bright light filmmakers flash when characters cross from reality into dream/fantasy." dave segal, the stranger

dolphins into the future

"naturalist visionary Lieven Martens brings us along the latest voyage of his musical vessel, Dolphins Into The Future. “A Star Maker, Strange Dreams, and Clairvoyance” induces a state of lucid dreaming where we experience tales of romance, stargazing, cosmic motion, and eternity. not unlike a painter’s brush, Martens utilizes a sound palette of colorful, synthesized organics to bring the listener directly into the vivid and exotic world that Dolphins has spent years cultivating. after much anticipation, we’re very pleased to offer the latest creation of a true hero of the nu new age." nna tapes

"Lieven combines what sounds like a modified theremin or an auto-tuned saw, or just maybe some really creepy Birdsongs of the Mesozoic-type vocals with lots of deftly-placed, tinkling bells and other less identifiable ocean sounds. Lieven is obsessed with sounds of the ocean, but also sounds of the historical ocean, and he applies this obsession to his work with the mission statement "I create cetacean transfers". while listening to this work, you might experience a temporal transfer for sure." impose

dolphins into the future

"Canto Arquipélago" is an audio poem for the Açores. It being an elogio for this (and others) beautiful and metaphorical volcanic archipelagos. The album is a coherent scrapbook collection of on site fieldrecordings and automatically written cantatas. Recorded at our temporary studios in a small fishermen town, São João, on the island of Pico.
Ilha Do Pico is a small isle in the central group of the Açores archipelago. Where we lived for a few months, in the aforementioned friendly village, closed in by the Atlantic ocean and the bush. On the flank of one of Europe’s highest volcanic mountains, Pico. The haze, the extreme beauty, the energy and the dramatics of a sleepy wild place on the Mid Atlantic volcanic ridges, is felt in every hiss and sound. The rhythm of the archipelago, as being my guide." lieven moana (dolphins into the future)

"There is something phenomenally enticing about a sequestered island chain, literally bounded by a vast and enveloping sea. Perhaps it’s the romance of discovery, the knowledge that here lies the safety of land within the great seclusion of nature. Perhaps it’s the raw beauty that is simply emerald speckled turquoise.
Lieven Moana as Dolphins Into The Future dedicates his latest effort to the Azores, a remarkably beautiful volcanic archipelago that lacks very little by way of inspiration. The ambient conjurer weaves glorious tones and minimal percussion with brilliant and evocative field recording, having spent several weeks on the island cluster for this body of work. “Once an island gets born,” Lieven articulates, “it’s a continuous struggle, a continuous dialogue, a learning, a battle and cooperation of influences. The sea starts bashing on it’s shores. Erosion starts the complete demolition of the island. But at the same time, sun and sea give birth and food… Archipelagos have a heavy rhythm.”  underwater people

un fin de semana especialmente idílico y bonito gracias a la relajante discografía de dolphins into the future. el belga lieven martens, ese ser marino (he is actually a dolphin), de entrañable bigote, enamorado del agua y los cetáceos, también conocido como lieven moana, duncan cameron, o l.r.j martens (no olvidar a horseback ride to the sanctum of montu ni el exótico viaje con ada van hoorbeke) nos deleita con un poema musical dedicado a las islas ozores  y grabado en la Ilha do Pico. cantos de pájaros tropicales, evocadores kikirikís de gallos vespertinos, palos de agua, delfines, ballenas, burbujas, murmullos de agua, xilófonos, grillos, ¿azores?..."My music is a landscape. A ku'ono for your mind to hike in. For the exploration of a personal jungle. For the atonement of a world out there, above there, in there. A spring of harmonies. A bay of sound. A natural and abstract composition, rooted in romance and subconsciousness."

l.r.j. martens & ada van hoorebeke

"L.R.J. Martens aka Dolphins Into The Future presents two 'Eternal Landscapes' inspired by the artwork of Ada Van Hoorbeke. These landscapes were recorded at the Cetacean Nation Studios in Antwerp, and at Wiels, Brussels, in 2010 and cover similarly tropical aquatic zones as Lievens is best known for. The first expanse is a trip through tropical mangroves soundtracked by chirruping bird calls, trickling polynesian rhythms and a nocturnal chorus of unidentified animalicula, maybe... The other side feels like we're on land, in a humid downpour listening to a novice gamelan orchestra zonked on the heat but compelled to keep playing beautifully out of time. Immersive." boomkat
