jorma tapio & terje isungset

"the music being produced in the country of Finland has a distinctive connecting fiber running through it that must, in some way, be a result of its geographic location and cultural heritage. The connection runs so deeply, in fact, that the semi-conscious listener is often able to recognize it immediately. At first, the relational factor seems to be one that is simply due to a trade off of members throughout various incarnations, i.e. the Finnish free-folk scene, which contains current day luminaries such as Avarus and Kemialliset Ystävät. But upon further examination one will notice quite a large amount of musical activity coming out of that country that manages to maintain this characteristic yet remain somewhat aloof from the main group interviewed in the Wire."
"This sound finds itself deeply implanted in the duo work of between reed and string player jorma tapio and percussionist terje isungset. The two do not play with Avarus or Lau Nau but they do maintain elements of both within their music, yet they have probably each been playing music longer than the aforementioned collectives. As for the music featured on this record the duo maintain a definite bend toward free jazz infused with the sounds of the Finnish experience. In fact Isungset includes, as a part of his drum kit, various homemade instruments of arctic birch, slate and even ice.
The album can best described in its relationship to the environment, as Tapio and Isungset are able to truly invoke the lay of the land. Haunting winds fiercely blowing through a barren landscape: is that a voice heard in the distance or is it simply an aural illusion, a trick of the mind, like a mirage in the desert. At points the wind subsides and some wonderfully delicate flavors erupt from everywhere. If you listen closely you’ll soon take notice of the delicate balance of life that manages to hang on through all this and the pure beauty that lies under the harsh faáade.
The highlight of this record is the track “Salainen tuli/Secret fire”, clocking in at over twenty minutes it closely explores every aspect discussed above. The piece begins with the invocation of a train running through the wilderness on a cold winter’s night; the whistle’s blowing, the engine’s roaring and the wind is howling. As the train moves further into the distance one is left with only the violent wind, rustling the bare branches of the trees, blowing snow and ice in every possible direction, rattling the very foundation of the surrounding structure. The last whistle calls of the train are heard in the distance, the wind subsides and the sounds from a party at the house next door can be heard. The party convenes for the evening and the soft scraping sounds of rustling branches replace the wind and the train, bringing the last bits of the night into a comforting stillness, until the wind picks up once again.
Besides this track, the remainders of the compositions are shorter in nature and focus on a singular aspect of the duo’s playing. That is except for “Mana”, which stands out a bit as it focuses mainly on repetition maintaining an almost electronic aspect; ending the record on a rather joyous and almost danceable note. 8/10" cory card (foxy digitalis)

Sabir Mateen / Daniel Carter / Andrew Barker

sabir mateen/daniel carter/andrew barker - not on earth…. in your soul! (qbico, 2006)

"The Italian label Qbico is always full of surprises and rarely fails to impress. With this LP we are treated with one of the most inspiring and energetic free-jazz performances of the year. The amazing drumming by Andrew Barker, the back and forth action between the two horn players and the chanted vocals make for an exhilarating and ecstatic experience. Also great about the label is their use of artwork. This one in particular is breathtaking. The musicians are captured in a moment which perfectly reflects their joyful and energetic playing." bubbachups (motel de moka)
"When discussing any record put out on the Qbico label, one must first address the visual aspects, as they play such an important role in how the record is initially received. At Qbico the ideal is to create records that are in and of themselves significant objects beyond the fact that they transmit some wonderful sounds. Where the tendency of previous Qbico releases has been to rely heavily on an array of psychedelic colors, this release by Daniel Carter, Andrew Barker and Sabir Mateen functions on a level of visual subtlety. The cover is an elegant black and white photo of the three players; Carter up front, Barker in the mid-ground and Sabir Mateen bathed in a wonderful light in the background. The light featured in this photograph, alludes to the transcendental nature of the album’s title; “Not on Earth… In Your Soul.” The record itself is a beautiful translucent, smoky grey color that further enhances the overall feel. What has been created here is a perfect merging of image, text and sound as the physical object begins to reveal what is awaiting the listener between the sleeve tucked deep away inside those tiny grooves. The sound itself is an attempt to describe the transcendental experience of the text; slowly taking you up and out to some real deep moments of pure ecstatic freedom. The first side begins slow and mellow with some flute and clarinet but as soon as the drums kick in the experience soon evolves into some heavier moments that still latch onto the airiness of the beginning. The face ends with some moving vocal improvisations that almost sound like directions on how to get to the space that the music is about to head when the record is flipped. The second side begins right where the first left off launching into some very groove oriented drumming with chanted vocals and some back and forth action between the two horn players. This is the point where these gentlemen really hit their peak; taking the listener out… way out, or better yet in and then… gone… only to be brought back to earth by the enthusiastic sounds of the crowd as the musicians take their bow. 9/10" cory card (foxy digitalis)
mi último amor: Not on earth...in your soul! otro de esos tesoros que descubres gracias a una lista de favoritos, en este caso de Bubbachups. la realización de un sueño, condensar en dos canciones una noche mágica de la mano de tres magos. in your soul, una canción que enamora más y más... out of the blues & wild free jazz

dream/aktion unit

dream/aktion unit - blood shadow rampage (volcanic tongue, 2006)

"Volcanic Tongue is proud to present the first ever release by the Dream/Aktion Unit, a free-thinking avant garage Ur-kestra based around the central kernel of guitarist Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), saxophonist Paul Flaherty and drummer Chris Corsano (Six Organs Of Admittance, Sunburned Hand Of The Man et al) and featuring Heather Leigh Murray (Taurpis Tula/Jandek/Charalambides) on pedal steel and vocals and Matt Heyner (No-Neck Blues Band/Test/Angelblood) on upright bass.

The Dream/Aktion Unit were originally birthed as a side-project to allow Thurston Moore and Jim O’Rourke to fully explore the kind of ecstatic power blues that their work in Sonic Youth repeatedly implied. The addition of legendary New England saxophonist Paul Flaherty and powerhouse drummer Chris Corsano provided them with an umbilical connection straight to the source of modern musical freedom, while working to liberate them from previously articulated modes of known rock-speak. As a quartet, the group tore through a bunch of the USA’s most winning festival spaces - their ground-levelling F/X pedal assault at the De Stijl/Freedom FromParticular mention must be made of the classic horror artwork, courtesy of Karen Constance (Blood Stereo).

essie jain

"We Made This Ourselves, the first album by New York-via-London expat Essie Jain, is an insanely spare and sparse work. Accompanied by piano and guitar (as well as other instruments, like drums by Jim White of The Dirty Three), Jain's vocals breathe in the space between the words and phrases. The album sounds like she's surrounded by an entire orchestra, each member waiting patiently for their one moment to play, then fading again to stillness.
In 2004, she started recording at home with an eight-track. This gave her the freedom to experiment. She realized what she needed to do in order to create the sound she wanted -- nothing. Let the songs be roughly hewn. Keep them minimal. Avoid all indulgences. Let the music get as dark as it has to be. Her past few years' life experience gave rise to the lyrics that are so central to this record..." ba da bing!
"Haze starts like a secret prayer, a soliloquy, a slow grace of piano and voice. If that's all there was, it would be a very pretty song. Essie Jain's (full name, Essie Jain Wilkinson) hand is steady and her voice is keen and deliberate. She's restrained the way a singer who has operatic training is -- knowing it's all in the potential to push limits, but not necessary to constantly do so. And confident how women who daily navigate New York are (though she's originally from England). But something even more wonderful happens in "Haze," beginning just under a minute. Her voice thickens and pleats and the keys pick up their feet, lose their moorings, and gather plucked strings. It's a flowering that's torpid at first, but soon reveals brass that blazon brighter, chorus on chorus. Cymbals shower sparks. And as Wilkinson's voice rises and beams, "I am right behind you," it unpetals like a vivid pink rose open full to the sun. The song, in its bold, chromatic denouement, offers itself not just soul, but body." shake your fist

richard youngs & tirath singh nirmala

"Debut album from the duo of Richard Youngs and Tirath Singh Nirmala (nee John Clyde-Evans) that has the pair creating a bucolic minimalist meditation. Side one interchangeably features hammered strings, gong/cymbal washes, droning vocals, and breathed shackuhachi/flutes. The second side leads with a melodious encounter before delving further into a glimmering psychedelia with sawed strings, fluttering reed organ and electronic drift. The results resemble a non-western approach to traditional musics filtered through the personalized aesthetic that runs through each of the artist's prior works. The LP is enclosed in a full colour cover with suitable "of the earth" imagery." hp cycle

"Long-awaited vinyl LP from these two key UK underground players. Very pastoral/dusted folk feel with plenty of wind instruments, hand percussion and lush, minimal drones cohering in a way that isn't a million miles from Japanese folk/psych unit Ghost circa Second Time Around. Stand-out track features wordless, oddly modulated vocals from the duo, hovering round a melody whose contours seem plotted by the stars. Very beautiful." volcanic tongue

hush arbors

"Keith Wood and his Hush Arbors project had a good year in 2006. After multiple solo tours and stints with Wooden Wand & the Vanishing Voice, his first CD and LP were released earlier in the year. He ended the year relocating to England and plying his trade across the pond. With all this in mind, it was decided that a re-release of his first full-length for Digitalis was in order, and thus this expanded version of "Under Bent Limb Trees" was born.

Keith Wood concocts massive emotional releases in his head and transfers them to tape using the most organic means possible. Bowed dulcimer, singing bowl, banjo, and a his trademark falsetto dot the horizon of this majestic album. This graceful and subdued music has been extracted from the earth and laden with golden spirits.

This two CD set, housed in gatefold cardboard jackets, is the perfect embodiment of Wood's delicate take on shy melancholia that has one foot in the forest and one on a log fire, burning with passion. His experience as the go-to guy of not only Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance) but Massachussets God-botherers Sunburned Hand of the Man for live appearances has clearly set him in good stead for his own recordings, and this collection only serves to magnify his deft talent and unique voice.

Disc one features the whole of "Under Bent Limb Trees," newly remastered and sounding better than ever. The real prize is in the second disc, which features out-of-print, rare, and unreleased tracks culled from Wood's own collection and various limited and obscure releases." digitalis

"Just as comfortable wringing deadly screaming leads from his guitar as he is coaxing gentle modern day country hymns to Catatonia from it, Wood is, first and foremost, a songwriter in the traditional sense. his songs will feel right at home during nights of quiet debauchery, as well as during those shame-filled mo(u)rnings after.'' - James Toth, Wooden Wand & the Vanishing Voice

"Hush Arbors' new release "Under Bent Limb Trees" explores the many facets of nature – the warmth of a hazy sunny summer day, the angry tumult of a storm, and the enclosing menace of kudzu cover. Wood’s Nature is not only worthy of our admiration but also our respect and awe. It is a beguiling mixture of delicate seductive sun-washed days and grim, steely, claustrophobic blackness." - Steve Rybicki, Fakejazz

"Like his friend and sometime collaborator Ben Chasny-- who last year also contributed liner notes to Hush Arbors' self-titled album-- Keith Wood here shows the ability to take the barest ingredients of folk and psych-rock traditions and transmute them into his own unique form of sorcery." - Matthew Murphy

The forest we've been'.

eluvium

"Following a string of increasingly remarkable albums, Eluvium's Matthew Cooper set out to broaden his instrumental palette, while maintaining the uncanny emotional resonance that has become his trademark. The result is 'Copia', an hour-long epic that applies Eluvium's heartache-inducing ether to a symphony of strings, brass, keyboards and piano. Noticeably absent but hardly missed are the washes of guitars that color most of Eluvium's previous material. The deliberate exclusion of traditional rock instrumentation serves as sufficient proof that the instrument is not Eluvium¹s driving force. At best it is a catalyst, a vehicle to that netherworld in the back of your head, where your life starts to uncontrollably reevaluate itself."

hush arbors

"This is a live solo outing from Keith Wood recorded in October 2006 in Sheffield, UK. Handnumbered edition of 101 copies. Comes in wraparound sleeve designed by Nicole Poppi"

alicia bay laurel

"Japan's Em Records presents 2000 recordings of hippie folk psych songs written by Alicia Bay Laurel, the author of the classic back-to-the-earth manual "Living On The Earth". Laurel was a one-time student of John Fahey and her playing here inhabits the kinda parallel candyfloss world so beautifully documented by the recent Ladies Of The Canyon set with great, goofy hippy themes. Another swell time capsule from the always-intriguing Em records" - Volcanic Tongue

It collects the best tracks from those now impossible-to-find releases and adds two new songs and one collaborative piece with Scottish guitar guru, Richard Youngs. a broken consort

"Richard Skelton’s new project A Broken Consort tap’s into a bountiful vein of sound. Sitting somewhere comfortably between Flying Saucer Attack’s “Further”, the first Six Organs of Admittance album and Tony Conrad’s “Early Minimalism,” “The Shape of Leaves” is a seemingly timeless work of multilayered string drones augmented by subtle percussion and the scraping of strings. While Skelton’s reference points are sometimes very obvious, “The Shape Leaves” remains a deeply personal and evocative listening experience..." foxy digitalis

"Hi ! We are vlubä, posted at Buenos Aires at now, but borned at the lovely chrome moon, circa (since) 1965... Our music works consist at psychedelic weird cock, drone rok, free(ak) rock, no music, acid harsh nose, long distant folk, harsh electrons noise; cosmic kingdom music, conceptual art music, free improvisation, magical music for the high kings from the high spheres and I don't know what's experimental music (') or fuck off... something from this side of the planet and the others planets..... ."

wyrd visions

"Wyrd Visions features Colin Bergh, a Toronto-based artist, and co-founder of the percussively experimental Awesome. Unlike Awesome Wyrd Visions play identifiable, if unusual songs (some people argue that Awesome mostly bang stuff, make noise, and chant). With Colin fronting 'Visions as a well-kitted couture elf, it's no surprise their sound bring to mind -- well shit, listening to "Bog Lord," I feel like I'm in a forest. On mushrooms. Or maybe I'm hanging out with my druidic friends, joking about wood nymphs and eating rare berries. And yes, AYF? loves rare berries."Freezing Moon" - the first track featured here - is a song originally written by Mayhem, the infamous black metal band. Read their story, because if you haven't, you are missing out on one of the strangest tales in music (yes, stranger than anything even Phil Spector could cook up). - are you familiar

frank-o-fest

"Lovely, stoned/drifting improvs for digeridoo, pipe organ, sitar, sax, etc, led by John Frankovic, and played in a Milwaukee church by members of F/i, Plasticland, the Petals & the Violent Femmes. For reasons of perceived non-hipness, this is an album that slipped right through the cracks of most hipsters consciousness. I can only say that it is a gorgeous piece of late night listening and anyone who is into the Third Ear Band, Lola V. Stain, Annexus Quam, or other purveyors of hash-dappled chamber weirdom will find much to puff on here." - Father Yod
the players were...
caleb alexander: saxophone and other assorted wind instruments; victor demechie: percussion and drums; ralph drzewiecki: percussion; fta: nose whistle, harmonica, floor board, jews harp; john frankovic: sitar, bouzouki, berimbau, hand percussion, trombone, schwam, vocals, bamboo and clay flutes; glenn rehse: pipe organ; brian ritchie: didjeridoo, baglama, tympani, bamboo sax, nose flute, laxmitone; voot warnings: cello

hannu

hannu - worms in my piano (osaka, 2006)

"Hannu lives in Helsinki, Finland. His musical background includes a free-grindcore band Abyss at the age of 11-12 plus lots of teenage experiments with four-track recorders and synthesizers. His source of inspiration is nature, landscape, weather, light, places, friends, etc. His music captures a mood or a feeling of a place, to take the listener somewhere for a moment. The album is a very personal statement and it is mostly recorded and produced at home in Helsinki but some of the songs utilize sounds culled from four-track recordings he made as a teenager in his home town in Northern Finland."

despiertas y en la carpeta upload ana ha colado este 'worms in my piano'. ¿Hannu? mmm, Hannu, Hannu, ...

anahita

anahita - arcana en cantos (deserted village, 2006 cd-r)

"This is the first release from the duo of Tara Burke (Fursaxa) and cellist Helena Espvall-Santorleri. It's three tracks will sound familiar to Fursaxa fans but the cello and extra female vocals provide more undertows to the slow whirl. The art is a luscious painting by Helena's husband Paul. "

Anahita; Antigua divinidad alada femenina irania.
