safiyya

"The title of each track seems to allude to some kind of archetype and to describe a stage in some sort of ritual. The important thing to keep in mind is that there is some kind of black rite happening in the deepest part of the woods (or the desert), and Muranoand Rose are the ones in charge of setting the mood and deranging the senses. This is how you conjure the spirits and direct them through sound; this here indeterminate musical object is the real deal. Let’s say Music is a walled country and Noise is the barbarous wasteland where cartographers fear to tread. In between, there’s a wild and dark forest, a forest of terror and wonder: that’s Safiyya, that’s Shareek Hayaat."

beru

"Her music always breaks my heart. As her voice hovers over everything like an omnipresent spectre, fractured instrumental waves crash into each other in every possible combination. Whether it’s a drum machine pounding you in the face or electric guitars ablaze by the distorted trappings of long-forgotten idols, Beru never rests. Collins voice is at its strongest as she longingly sings “You are my whold world…” wrapped in a bed of violins and strangely-hypnotic vocal loops. It’s all perfectly puncuated with metal-infused guitar stabs that do their best to bring the whole thing to a screeching halt. Music like this takes ages to perfect, but Beru has reached that point of no return. Fire Eyes Gather Souls is a magical ride to another world. Jessica Collins has become an absolute force." (digitalis)

ghostrider

"Ghostrider is the debut cassette from Cologne dark synth guru Jens Pauly (formerly Temple Of Beeheads). Sci-fi tones & brooding minimalism leads the way to the open portals of your interior psyche. Droned out oceans of flowing arps for your spiritual demons." hobo cult

"one of the most solid and promising debuts I’ve come across all year, Demons is the stunning first release from Cologone-based synth overlord Jens Pauly, aka Ghostrider. Sorta brings back the same feelings of hearing Oneohtrix Point Never‘s early stuff for the first time, although Ghostrider’s got some truly original tricks up his sleeve. I highly recommend snapping this tape up quickly ~ especially if you’re a fan of those deep, fuzzy drones that send chills up your spine. Brilliant." zen effects

"Germany's Jens Pauly seemed to appear out of nowhere in 2011 with two of the year's best synth tapes on Hobo Cult and Digitalis Ltd. Voices finds Pauly honing his craft even further with seven new meticulously composed pieces. Each track immediately springs to life with vivid, cinematic detail. Pulsing, heavily sequenced numbers call forth images of high-speed drives through neon-lit urban jungles, while more restrained and amorphous tracks bring to mind slow strolls through a foggy hillsides. Steering clear of the slightest bit of excess, Pauly is truly a master at conveying moods that resonate deeply without wasting a single second. Pro-dubbed and imprinted chrome cassettes, featuring designs by Caroline Teagle." tranquility tapes

"everyone is going all berlin school these days, but ghostrider's jens pauly just shrugs his shoulders wondering what all the fuss is about. he's all ready to start his own fucken köln school, blasting seraphim blisscapes over the bridges attempting to drain the rhine. "light pulse" resonates with absolute clarity, rolling over the synthetic hills into a different shade of grass. as his compositions loop around and fold in on themselves, they disappear like vapor in the early morning and leave nothing behind but the haze."

"this is an exciting record replete with underwater tunes. the outer space & the deep blue sea collide into two sides of spellbinding adventures reminiscent to the early work of Oneohtrix Point Never, Jürgen Müller and Dolphins Into The Future. Panabrite works in the hazy, analog-synth-laden zone between kosmische drift and new age waft. He launches beatless symphonies of fibrillating, smeared whorls and drones that make you feel like the star of a weird nature documentary or a sci-fi blockbuster from 1977. Chambers excels at evoking both the intimate and the epic with his scrupulously wrought arpeggios and ostinatos." aguirre

“I made this album a little over two years ago. I was really into these underwater-themed library and soundtrack albums at the time, vintage guys like Francois de Roubaix, Sven Libaek, Armando Sciascia, Eugen Thomass; really evocative and moody stuf with a slightly off-kilter sensibility. I wanted to fuse this kind of feel with some more spacey electronic tones to create little vignettes. there’s definitely a kind of nostalgic trip going on here in a way, which I can’t deny. growing up in the 80′s a lot of those science films and documentaries featuring bloop-bleep type music really got ingrained in my mind, and to this day I look back at that aesthetic or idea for inspiration. I love aquatic-themes in music and films, etc… but what really appeals to me is the visual/aural aesthetic and trying to create an auditory travelogue.” norm chambers

charlatan meets the north sea

"Here is our new release, out September 1st by Brad Rose of Digitalis record label fame. Impromptu post-speakeasy jam session, recorded at the witching hour by two of the the scene's most reclusive noise cats around. They got down and burned all the heat out of the studio with some serious synthesizer blowouts, each getting in their own licks. Charlatan's mellow moods converge with the harsh wailing of the North Sea, faithfully laid to tape (in the midst's of tension) by Green Country's chief engineer Brad Rose. These cats might not break it down ever again, but for one magical night it got crazy."

s. gone / royallen / llanten

"danchisko may have shortened the name but the impact is still long for this world. the previous sovetskaya jaunts were dreamy affairs but "kimberley al butnan" is something else. skeletal, irregular rhythms dot the horizon while methodic key plundering follows the trail up the mountain. each point on the map flirts with melodicism while staying on the knife's edge. there's a wobbly, uneasy feeling hiding under the surface, but i'm okay with getting seasick as long as we continue down this way." experimedia

"royallen: blessed recoveries from the minister himself. this track may or may not count as a cultural anthropology credit. It’s like flipping through the various stations and each offers a moment of random ramblings from the local dj or a juncture of juxtaposed junk jingles and jangles. llanten: deep tribal lucidities with an impenetrable flow. tribal ritualism, primitive rhythms, narcotic washes, and mesmerizing trails. It’s an anthropological hodgepodge that continuously flows from one groove to the next. cultural immersion in collective postmodern contrasts and contradictions." rotifer / foxy digitalis

planets around the sun / herbcraft / sacred basil

"Planets Around The Sun have been exploring many inner and outer spaces inebriated with fluid acid folk/drone/psych improvisations. prior to this indefinite tour, they collected these recordings made in various barns, on boats and in bedrooms. an epic collection by these traveling wizards who are also part of the extended Cursillistas, Herbcraft, Tempera, White Light etc. family. 70 copies." sloow tapes

"...fantastic repeating gamelan-tone hypnotics and zoned female vocalese giving way to Godz-play-Jandek downer guitar blues. some of the guitar playing is as out as Matthew Valentine’s post-Takayanagi navigations of folk/blues but when the rest of the commune start hunching like Amon Duul it’ll have you reaching for your Siloah albums to make sense of the levels of brain-erasing boo that these heads bring to the table." volcanic tongue

"Portland, Maine’s Matthew Lajoie is a man of many projects, and lately he has kept himself busy releasing and touring with Planets Around the Sun and his latest venture Brainshadows. ever since the dissolution of his principal group Cursillistas however, Lajoie’s main creative focus has been Herbcraft. this year Lajoie returns with two new releases of his signature psych-induced outsider folk. before the third proper Herbcraft record arrives this fall, a new limited edition tape comes next week to bridge the gap. Flowering contains ten fresh transmissions of opaque and somber yet delightfully ambitious and sprawling explorations. Flowering will be out July 9 on Julia Dream Recordings in an edition of 99 tapes. The new imprint has no website yet, but distribution will happen via Volcanic Tongue." nfop

"sacred basil is the trio of nicholas barker (tempera), matt lajoie (cursillistas) and jordan spencer (gorman) and their collective talents are lighting up the skies. "tuvan annex" starts of shimmering and peaceful but it's a total ruse. guitar lines get washed into an oscillating oblivion and everything gets bathed in a heavy dose of noise swash. it's like being stuck in a tornado, desperately searching for a way out. the shimmer returns but with full-on density and triumph. each shift feels in the zone. blissed guitars and electronics join together, siamese twins moving in perfect harmony. contemplative, sparsely used notes flicker like a lightbulb about to give up hoping to make one final impression before crossing the great divide. there's something almost heartbreaking about it all.

but those aren't the only paths being crossed ~ not at all. rickety, looping acoustic guitars thrum their way forward with barely-audible background beats and electronic backwash. it's like being lost when nobody wants to admit their mistake. it's unsettling but worthwhile as it finally comes together and everything gets sucked to the bottom in a massive, exquisite whirlpool of sound. love those collaborations." digitalis

born again for the first time

"In celebration of the fact that we finally redesigned the Digitalis label site for the first time in over 7 (!!!) years, we got together a huge group of some of our favorite bands & artists from Digitalis’ past, present, and future for a sweetforce compilation. This all came together pretty fast and it’s a true testament to the quality of all this contributors that so many came through with such killer tunes. This compilation will stand up to the best of them and hey, it’s free if you want it to be.

panabrite

"Norm Chambers is not a household name to most people but for those who have been reveling in the monster that is Panabrite for the last few years, he is absolutely adored. Some will be quick to chalk Soft Terminal up as another 'synth record,' but that's just the surface dressing. There is something deeper and much more complex happening here. Vivid, liquid dreams are sculpted into intricate fantasy landscapes, each layer revealing what a wizard Chambers is.

The thing with Panabrite is that he has an innate ability to write richly textured, melodic compositions that have as much in common with vintage electronic library music as they do with minimal synth pop and 70s prog." digitalis

michael james tapscott

"if i could only be serenaded by one person for the rest of my days, i'd choose michael tapscott in a heartbeat. the odawas vocalist's talent is something to die for. that voice... cannot be beat. but what tapscott brings on his debut solo release under his own name is far more than just that voice. this is the soundtrack to the short film of the same name by neil blakemore and follows in the ocean-drift steps of the last odawas record, "the blue depths." melodic synthesizer passages float lightly on simple, seductive drum machine beats and acoustic guitar lines. erratic, almost-harsh electronica even makes an appearance as tapscott uses all his tricks to crystalize the theme of the film. every turn finds a new path, all of which lead back to the central precipice.

higuma

"January is always time for new beginnings and sewing the seeds for the year to come and I can think of no better way to start things off than with this massive, dusty blast from San Francisco duo, Higuma. Comprised of Barn Owl's Evan Caminiti and Lisa McGee. Like a phoenix from the shambles, "Den of Spirits" comes from a place buried deep and forgotten. These are sonic explorations steeped in the sound of the earth's core. Caminiti and McGee have concocted an epic brew of dirt-stained drones.

Basic, tribal percussion underpins the scorchers as they soar. Caminiti's exquisite guitar explorations are puncuated by the absolutely inspiring vocals from McGee. Terrestrial choirs never sounded so good...It's a carefully constructed, delicately held-together mini-masterpiece. Don't worry, though, because when you come down, you'll come down gently into a bed of crystal clean air. Stunning all the way." digitalis

"all love to the master, dewmah has arrived. dewey mahood is probably best known these days as being the non-bindeman third of portland's fuzz kings, eternal tapestry. but when he's not burning down houses, he moonlights as the inimitable plankton wat. fractured folk-infused meanderings with warm strings and organic dressing. mahood's vocals are the ideal accompaniment to these bright, understated anthems. minimal percussion and mbira pick up where the vocals leave off, finding a balance with the acoustic haze.

cursillistas

"Cursillistas has been a longtime Digitalis favorite so we're very, very excited to be offering up their newest creation as a vinyl-only release. "Joint Chiefs" sees originator Matt Lajoie joining spirit and forces with Dawn Russell and burning new ground along the way. This is a new path entirely. Where past Cursillistas efforts have been drenched in sunkissed tones and melodic stirrings, "Joint Chiefs" dredges up muddy waters and dark emanations like a blast from the deep. this is barn owl meets the dust bowl meets peyote music. Loose strings ring out on acoustic guitars while rattling percussion marches toward the river. Lajoie and Russell send their voices out on top as a guide, looking for any light that is seeping through the thick, duststorm clouds. Just when it looks like it's going to clear up a bassed-out blanket of fuzz and synth tones come along to ruin all the progress you've made. "Joint Chiefs" feels like an epic journey, sordid and sweet. If you find yourself lost in these dark woods, all you can do is adapt, suck in the smoke-filled air and toast the charred heavens. Cursillistas reinvented." digitalis

of

"Loren Chasse is responsible for a whole host of vital albums. He was a founding member of the Jewelled Antler label and has sparked so many great moments from the likes of Thuja, The Blithe Sons, Softwar, and of course his main solo guise, Of. For years this project has evolved into something of absolute magical grandeur. "Rocks Will Open" is the latest opus in Chasse's catalog. The music on this album is as organic as it gets. Each tone, each sound feels like it has been culled directly from the Earth's crust. Gentle drones arc toward the hazy sunlight, flickering like distant birds sailing out over the sea. Between the ghostly echoes rises a cacacphony of plucked strings dancing toward oblivion. Loren Chasse's vision is perfectly expressed on "Rocks Will Open." digitalis

keijo

"Keijo hails from Jyväskylä, Finland, a small town in the north that claims to be the center of the universe. In the sprawling Finnish underground, Keijo is the wise sage who everyone admires. In his 52 years, he has travelled the world twice and seen his share of turmoil. He was nearly killed in a motorcycle accident and still bears a metal plate in his skull as a constant reminder. But these experiences have been essential in shaping the sound world he constructs with his fingertips.

Palla, Blown From Here sees Keijo finally getting the larger audience he deserves. He has worked and collaborated with Finnish acts such as Vapaa, Avarus, and Kheta Hotem. This nine songs sees Keijo taking a more solemn path, reflecting on the quiet moments nature brings, and showcase Keijo's array of talents, including his impressive throat-singing abilities. Palla, Blown From Here is the aural transition of summer into autumn. Over the course of this album, Keijo's soft acoustic compositions flow from him like prose from a poet's pen. The beauty this music exudes is a testament to his life and his work. This is Keijo's world and we are just living in it." digitalis
