hundred acres / second family band

second family band ~ wrong carnival, kid (earjerk, 2012)

"step right up folks! take a gander the most frightening and fantastic, merry and motley crew ever to grace the midway! The Fabulous Furry Freak Family is in! And for the price of a fin and a deuce this cassette can be yours!  The first side, 'Wrong Carnival, Kid'  is a throbbing rager worth the price of admission alone. thrown down at the barefoot hobo haven dubbed the faux-op, this one will leave you dizzy. must be this tall to ride. please remove any loose items and keep hands and head inside of the vehicle at all times. the B-side splits it's time between a creepy carny lament, 'Nopus No.23' and a funhouse flashback titled 'House of Mirrors' that will definitely keep you amused." earjerk

second family band

"Humming and wheezing through 40+ minutes of electro-acoustic tension and release, with the usual mood swings from good vibes to hysteria, the Second Family Band is the still-raging avatar of our lonely local folkspirit....This cassette contains six choice excerpts from two sessions given near the end of summer, 2009. The first session was a huge family gathering at the newly installed Harvest Abbey in Madison. The second session was a beautiful performance by a trio of elders within St Mary's of the Oaks, a 154 year-old Marian altar built on a hilltop in the forest around Indian Lake. Loads of percussion, singing, plucking, pounding, tapping, dropping, alien choirs, bass grooves, naked ladies, strange fidelities, chanting, praying, drinking, strumming, smoking, ringing, clapping, bowing, pulsing, losing, forgetting, and finding everything in every type of mood from the sinister to the blissful. Yet, one local cynic described the music on this tape as sounding "too good for Second Family Band". Whatever the case may be, Brave Mysteries is proud to release this document of a momentary glance into the native spirit and biodynamic soundscape of central Wisconsin, in hopes to keep these gentle old family flames burning for yet another season." brave mysteries

ye uphall knyte fryars

"Stay up all night with the Fryars! Travel through time and space in the grand tradition of the global psychedelic underground with this pseudonymous quartet of Second Family Banders on the lam. The Trans-Galactic Be-In is someplace to be! But the Trans-Temporal Be-In is the real trip...how did they manage to record this one in Golden Gate Park way back in 1967?? Festivities conclude at dawn with the slow-motion dubscape Sun Arose." boondock pissoir

"Ye Uphall Knight Fryars may be appealing to fans of Second Family Band and indeed, it would seem at least of few of the family are fryars... As you may know anarchy is an essential element in Second Family Band's perpetually bewildering output. This 'no rules' policy is part of what constantly renews them and keeps it churning..." earjerk

second family band

"Is their a more mystical and perilous city in the world than Jerusalem? Old Testament dread haunts the first side as the Family sings of Glory while Pan plays his flute and dances impishly outside their circle. Side two commences with the sand blown sounds of the Ancient City, before Night Journey finds the band escaping heavenward through dark skies" boondock pissoir

"Second Family takes you on an erotic “D&D Quest” in this hour long ambient-prog synthesizer fantasia. On the A side Naked Ladies shimmer in the moonlight; flip it over and Dragons circle dreamily overhead." boondock pissoir

second family band

"Another incredible offering from the Second Family Band camp, documenting their huge collective burnouts. side A begins with a Murky laidback basement jam which quickly morphs into a psychedelic banjo romp, and ends with the incredible tropical sounding shamanic title track.
The flip sides drugged up guitar solo and loose percussion keeps the pace for another of the band’s sonic meditations, which all accumulates into the last track’s laid back Dub Vibes, perfectly suited for heaviest smokers soundtrack." bum tapes

second family band

"Winged Stomp House indeed, the Second Family Band, a rag tag Wisconsin crew risen from the ashes of the Davenport Family, coast through airy yowls and yelps, stomping the floor in unison, synths blurting, flutes screaming, a swirling mess of a bonfire party. Stay out of the field if you can't handle to riffs. Lovingly captured by Endless to handheld cassette on the first of March, featuring a full on line-up of Dave 3000, Ol'Son, Iam Lee Ian, Woodman, Clay Ruby, Nico Kain, Ivan Mairesse, and Endless himself. This one's a burner.. Edition of 50 ember-orange pro-dubbed tapes in fire singed wrap around sleeves with pine-tree stamp burnt windows and an insert." cabin floor esoterica

second family band

"another Second Family Band killer collision with Peaking Lights and this time with Relentless Corpse! Record live to stereo cassette in the barn on the P.L.'s compound. The flip side contains a traditional solstice jam and a small piece performed for Indra and Aaron's wedding. What is it with Wisconsin and barn jams!? Who cares. It's always a cranium cracking, mind melting experience. Feel that warm stuff oozing down your neck? That's your brain....36 copies on yellow tapes with matching case 99 copies on black cassette." earjerk

second family band

"5 or 7 second family band tunes out of thin air. Recorded on the shores of windy Lake Mendota. Acoustic strumming, guitar-body drumming, trad sec fam throat singing, courtesy db pedersen and some amazing string action from Jared Annoye. For the most part a daylight affair but the Suns definitely dip behind the cloud more than a few times. First 25 copies on sunny yellow cassettes." earjerk

"Pack some granola. Two long hikes through the haze grace this 80 minute cassette. 'Morning in the East' blazes trails." I'm taking my banjo along through the Himalayas and if you wanna drag that arp along that'd be cool with me." The flip has a real dirty metropolis groove. Traveling. Lets crescendo awhile. Way out west now...How long we been drivin? ...Any Natives still live around here?. Second Family Band" earjerk

second family band

"Second Family Band, had to happen... Let's take things to the Eye-Lands! Tropical breeze bass lines and a sunset vibe definitely rule this release. We know! We know! It's all the rage right. Well... we did what we did and now we gotta let you have it. Would it help if we let you know it just kinda happened? I mean, you can't plan these kinda jams right? Hey! I said Pina Colada not Ayuasca! Come aboard... we're expecting you..." earjerk

second family band

"it's a dirty new age and we are set in our ways. ingest these two crunchy jams." second family band

"the first side, "taking cloud mountain", has some steady tribal style drumming, using the pulse as a nice means of keeping things moving along without overtly grabbing onto any cliched sound sources. second side's called "return of the native", and this time around the band opt for some darker territories while still tending the same field of drumming pulses and synth riffery..." ear conditioned nightmare

second family band

"By 2002, many volk had gathered 'round and beat the bounds within the walls and yards of the Tomb. Many musical stories were born, such as The Davenport Family, The Grass Magic, Thee Botanical Shrine Band, Zodiac Mountain, All Do Gather, Organon, Candiru, The Crowned and Conquering Children, A Mercury Ensemble, Orthodox Blood Orchestra, The Midwestern Mudslide Hootenanny and Free Pentecostal Family Jams, Outlet, Jesus Balls, Mirror Man and th' Oshun Oxtra, as well as dozens of unnamed gatherings. These events have resulted in hundreds of hours of recorded musik and the tapes continue to pile up as most of us still live and work and play together. So now we have christened the advent of the Second Family, our new and unified banner for all of these our ancient (and future) rites. Peace, -=z.::.w=-"

second family band

"Another totally spontaneous, universal sludge jam from Family II (db Pedersen, Iam Lee, Endless, Clay Ruby and Karen Eliot), Jooklo Duo, Peaking Lights, Sam Henry (Plastic Boner Band) and Jason Soliday. All the things you want from all parties involved. fluid improv jams, weird prog moments, and menacing noise. When people come to Wisconsin they just wanna gather round and jam. (cd-r, lovingly hand packaged in envelopes with one-of-a-kind artwork. Limited to 50 copies" earjerk

second family band

"The ever living theater of Midwestern brethren (formerly casting itself as Davenport Family, Candiru, Zodiac Mountain, The Grass Magic, All Do Gather, A Mercury Ensemble, Orthodox Blood Orchestra, Jesus Balls, etc etc etc,) has birthed it's final phoenix as Second Family Band. Arising here is the first four discs in an on-going documentary anthology, originally intended as an LP series, these cdrs present the material as intended for consumption in the right now. "Wisconsin Gospel" collects unreleased material compiled by Clay Ruby from 10 years worth of gatherings and archival recordings. As always, the groups fearlessly treads through senseless psychedelia, energetic kraut/tribal workouts, ecstatic prayer sessions, and deep analog explorations flush with broken folk gestures and perfect accidents" skulls of heaven

the lamb called light

"The Lamb Called Night is for now like a one-night inspiration musical project by Theresa Behnen and Clay Ruby. Both had a late night musical vision, seeing and provoking the lamb, the lamb called night. In the shadows of that late night a semi-religious ritual was set up. With hum Hum the Om-drone vocals, plucked strings and campfire-reminiscent percussion the invitation is expressed. Like former churchvisitors on poison, they now sing for a different holy place, preferably with nature. The female vocals are whispery ; the vocal harmonies are from harmonious to very odd. Some combinations of its kind of religious song inspiration sounds in its sphere, as something in between a very tempered Spires That In the Sunset Rise, with a devotional aspect of course, and Long Live Death, with something of the mystical aspects of the Finnish Lau Nau & Islaja. The second track, listed as “Alleluia”, is a most recognisable song, with drums and percussion, electric bass, acoustic guitar. "Part of The Plan" is done in a semi-Middle Eastern mode, with droning plucked strings. Of course this is also a psychedelic (folk) song. Very good and very enjoyable." psychedelic folk

davenport family

davenport family - at the foot of zodiac mountain (meudiademorte, cassette 2007)

"one sided 35minutes long jam. their very last jam withmask of the davenport clan on their faces, free-form improvisational folk performed on walpurgis, clay rubys brithday by clay ruby, t endless, woodman, johnny d, billy lee, nico kain, aaron laurant, tyler olson.limited to 230 copies." meudiademorte

"Ultra limited release from the Davenport Family, the extended lineup of free folkers Davenport, released on the Meudiademorte label. This is a single 35 minute jam, and it is a monster, sure there's the usual, clattery percussion, distant folky jangle, shimmery ambience, but shit here gets way more fierce and scary. Some massive slow motion stripped down folk doom. Epic sludgy rhythms, a plodding crashing thud, demarcating a harsh landscape of wild tribal drumming, strange echoe-y vocals, streaks of guitar feedback, like some krautrock free folk doom metal Taj Mahal Travellers or something. Everything blown out and abstract, hung loosely around a relentless rhythmic death march, trawling through dense clouds of damaged fx, dubbed out drums, clattery percussion and huge bassy throbs. Tribal and primitive, spacey and majestic, pounding and surprisingly brutal for a bunch of hippy free folk misfits. Awesome!!" aquarius

wooden wand & the sky high band

"Does James Toth ever sleep? Having already released Gipsy Freedom this year with his Vanishing Voice band, and re-released his solo album Harem of the Sundrum, Mr. Wooden Wand is set to release yet another album, Second Attention, with his Sky High Band—featuring members of Skygreen Leopards, Vanishing Voice, and Davenport.
Still with me? The album, currently scheduled for a September 12 release on Kill Rock Stars, was supposedly recorded during a two-week period in San Francisco “holed up in a modified two story house with nothing but three reels of tape, a bunch of instruments and copious amounts of drugs and booze.” Amidst all this heathenry, the group churned out an album that reportedly has more of a traditional folk sound than Toth’s other projects. Go figure"

"...no matter. There is beauty in the periphery but more in the small details. Second Attention is where East truly meets West. Where the shimmer suddenly gets grimmer. Sunshine meets grease. It will likely be remembered as the album that remains after any and all 'movements' inevitably move on."

"Droning, tribal, frenzied, freaked out, eerie, subdued, piercing, drenching, etc etc words words - just listen to it."
