a r c a d e ~ bilberries and mushrooms

Hypnotic whirl of grooves and hums, layered over the ground of weird echoes. Dance of electric impulses of mycorrhiza. Drops of water on the spider web. Moonlight reflections in the crystals hidden between leaves... I can go on like this forever while listening to this tape. It came a while ago, but every time I listened to it, the more hypnotizing it was. I know that term "psychedelic" can be attached to anything these days, so let's just say it's magical. And it truly is! Once you fall into these grooves and catch the vibe of those slightly unbalanced loops, it will spin in your deck for ages. Tuluum Shimmering  tropical canoe trip with Julia Bloop and Rod Hamilton, smiling to each other under the moonlight. High Wolf-y relaxing tunes to lazy Sunday mornings, Black Joker's game of never-ending loops which erase the difference between sounds which are actually there and imagined ones. And believe me, you'll be getting many of them even when tape stops. Maybe it's just a result of long-time addiction to weird cassette loop music, but a r c a d e definitely brings some tricks along with its seemingly simple compositions. The name behind is Nathan Stephenson and I strongly suggest to keep an eye on his output - "bilberries and mushrooms" is only a debut work!

high wolf

"ascendent, crystallized tones from High Wolf.  calm, mantric expansions, burning at the center.  France's finest in contemporary psych." sun ark

voodoo mount sister | annapurna illusion | hellvision

"Voodoo Mount Sister  makes it on tape for the first time. Following 2010 debut cdr on Winged Sun and first vinyl appearance on Hands in the dark records “Soul Sista” is their weird attempt to bring soul music in noise / drone improvisations. Recorded in one session in July 2011 that went in many different directions, from dark kraut to noisy dub to psych dance. The girl is on synths and vocals, the guy is on beats & bass."

A side : Old dusty files from 2009 that sounds like an old babylonian conjuring the spirit deads…Like if the necronomicon book turned into a tape…Heavy organ chords, black mess style.

B side : One night in Belgium. The meting of Annapurna Illusion and Helvette (Glen Steenkiste from Sylvester Anfang II), under the full moon, after a few smokes and a couple of drinks. Two exhausted minds improvising minimal dark drones.

annapurna illusion

"...The music on Life Is An Illusion is gigantic and all-encompassing, conjuring up images of towering mountains, lost gods and swirling cosmos. At the same time, he elegantly suffuses his insistent and open-ended drones with touches of industrial noise and saturation that in less capable hands would seem out of place or clumsy. As such, Life Is An Illusion is one of the most accomplished synth drone albums released this last decade, and a welcome addition to the great kosmische canon." the liminal

"Annapurna Illusion, from France, is the evil twin of Not Not Fun's High Wolf. 'Life Is An Illusion' is scattered with fizzing electric guitars and ambient raga's which unfurl with the might of a psychedelic blizzard, fogging the sponges of the brain and eyeballs with a wash of hallucinations where Ash Ra Temple jam for hours on end with Loop. Tropical repetitive rhythms drone and drift, guided by a swarm of breezy effects and celestial layered synths that engulf the base of the mountain in hypnotic swirls of colourful head spinning rituals before zipping airborne to glide in a state of tranced euphoria." clearspot

high wolf

France’s High Wolf possesses a natural-born ability to zero in on the tones most conducive to inducing transcendental states. High Wolf’s tracks carry the uncanny sense of sounding as if they’ve been sluicing since the beginning of time, and that he had the graciousness to siphon them for teasingly brief absorption before they shimmer off to the vanishing point. This elite droneur is one of the few musicians who could title a release A Guide To Healing without it coming off as an ironic gesture or a laughable boast.

Atlas Nation, recorded in 2010 after a long trip to India and Nepal, deepens High Wolf’s penetration into the mystic. He evokes an uneasy peace with a new breed of tribal psychedelia shorn of all hokey signifiers. “Fuji Descent” starts the album with what could be a languid, paradisiacal soundtrack to a scrapped Alejandro Jodorowsky film. “The Dawn of Man” is a stark, stoned processional burrowing into malarial climes where guitars squawk in ominous tongues and congas cave in chests and clear brush with a vengeance. “Raagni” magnifies and psychedelicizes Rapoon’s mantric, ritualistic hand-drum patter and tropical-forest drones while hinting at Don Cherry’s jazz-raga peregrinations. High Wolf claims that “Haiti” was “recorded in a couple of hours on the day of the big earthquake in Haiti, so it's the darkest, saddest High Wolf track ever.” It’s a fittingly miasmic, climactic threnody.

Think of Atlas Nation as a surreal aural travelogue that takes a giant step beyond Jon Hassell’s Fourth World music, a humid milieu teeming with alien tonalities and oracular currents. It’s as welcome as a new, improved entheogen on the streets." holy mountain

"Two peace offerings from Wyld and Stag"

"High Wolf's 23-minute contribution, "Amazonian Love Call" recalls the sounds we have enjoyed from him to date, a humid combination of tribal beats, expansive guitars, and whispy synths. Annapurna shares in a similar jungle trance, but is harsher in tone..." altered zones

"This record is like a mental postcard from Varanasi (India). It’s probably my favorite place in the whole world, being there is like being on lsd. And if you dive in Ganga water - the purest water on earth according to the hindus, the most polluted and unhealthy according to science-, hold your breath and open your ears, this music is what you’ll hear." high wolf

high wolf

"Lupine looper and general world-lurker High Wolf has traversed a range of musical micro-terrains over the past half-year and with an upcoming Holy Mountain full-length on the horizon the timing of his inaugural stateside tour this Feb/March seems extra apt. To celebrate the trek we offer up Étoile 3030, a subtle six song zoner-cruise through pulsing gaseous clouds, brainwashed echo percussion, free hypno-fuzz riffing, and wobbly alien bass throbs. Tracks like “Dream Is Good” and “Studio 3” find High Wolf in particularly long-form headspaces, flatlining into innerspace, curlicues of wah burning off like solar flares, trancing with the stars. Live, High Wolf crouch-core craft comes costumed in weirdo ritual drama masks and illusionist cloaks so def bear witness if the chance presents itself..." not not fun

high wolf / masaki nakazawa

"Masaki Nakazawa, from the amazing band Topping Bottoms, is easily one of my favorite guitarists in the world. I just spent one month touring Japan with him, saw him play almost every day, jammed with him numerous times. What I can say is when he plays it's like his japanese tatoos take life and every ghost from ancient Japan, every kami is summoned. Winged Sun is more than proud to release his first solo piece ever. A side long reverb desert blues with haunting percussion, reminding me of Sun Araw's "The Phynx".

High Wolf shares the tape with one long 15 minutes piece showing a lot of range. It's starting with the furthest exploration of his dark side ever put on record (spent too much time with Annapurna Illusion), then turn into a psychedelic jam sounding like we're back at pharao's times and we have those fucking pyramids to build and concludes with a totally stoned improvisation, mainly acoustic, with a good dose of spiritual music and a spirit of tribe communion. maybe the best winged sun release so far, trust me on this one." winged sun

high wolf

high wolf • shangri l.a [moamoo .2010]

"High Wolf makes music like no one else on the planet. He claims to be from the Amazon and all his activities are shrouded in mystery. Sometimes he is just one man, other times High Wolf is a duo. In either case he conjours mystic tropical clouds of repetition and build that, while complex, are never hard to listen to. The music seems to tap into a primal frequency and demands listeners to dance. A contemporary of James Ferraro (of The Skaters), Oneohtrix Point Never and Ducktails.

He has records and tapes out on loads of ultra hip labels like Not Not Fun (the people who put out records by Sun Araw, Magic Lantern, Pocahaunted), Krayon, his own Winged Sun. Also he's known as the new superastral duo team IIbiis Rooge with the seminal talents of Mr. Neil Campbell, better known these days as Astral Social Club and (ex-)member of Vibracathedral Orchestra. The new album Shangri L.A features the edited tracks from acclaimed cassette "Gabon" on Winged Sun Records and 3 exclusive new tracks recorded during the spring of 2010. These tracks has been remastered by the Japanese famous engineer Soichiro Nakamura (Guitar Wolf, Boris, Yura Yura Teikoku...).

The album showed High Wolf looking at Africa from his native Amazonia...What's the difference between Amazonian and African jungles? When we live in the wild, with percussions and tribal singing, we're all the same..." moamoo

high wolf

"excellent french loop/keyboard/psychedelic exotica outfit that projects post-Vibracathedral Orchestra/Astral Social Club styled trance into the future on waves of spectral technicolour. Ascension feels more haunted than previous High Wolf releases, with deep strata of subtly obscured melodies wheeling beneath fuzz, shaker percussion and glorious vertical take-offs. Psychoactive electro-minimalism with a heavy devotional atmosphere. Hypnotic/melodic palm tree tronics sculpted into jangly rhythmic pop fogs" volcanic tongue

high wolf

"Seriously high-level from High Wolf, horizontal Sun-traveller vibes on these sides from the French hero of plantain based smoke-magic. Whale visions of the future-now seen via wound up wind chime ellipses and air bubble hypnosis. Gradual, ecstatic plateaus of inter-special communication around dawning, jungle-island horizon keyboards and euphoric ocean-floor dance-party trance-outs. Loops of shore-dwelling guitar and hand percussion rituals usher in ancient, paradise island phazer goddesses, wordless conversations and electronic transmissions between the beached tribesmen and the spirits of the spheres, bouncing universal mind-rays off shiny, green dolphin fins. Art by Jason Kerley, pro dubbed cassettes." krayon recordings
