"so distant, yet so close and warm. relaxing sounds of radio frequencies. ambient music for nights and days, mornings and evenings. soft poly cases with hand-stamped inserts. Limited to 50 copies."

"soft, strikingly beautiful ambience from Olli Aarni. two side long tracks that mark a stunning balance between shimmering, cloud-like melody, and warbled, damaged, almost disintegrating production. eerily touching and sublimely listenable. I have yet to hear a piece from Aarni, either under his own name, or the Ous Mal moniker that doesn't immediately transfer me into a cloud like dream state.t he liner notes state "RM radio, wine glass, tapes, etc. Recorded with one hand." guide me little tape

lichen gumbo

"Lichen Gumbo is a rock’n'roll duo from unmapped rural Finland, where mystical muddy swamps and aurora borealis lit skylines mix with low signal sitcoms from overseas. no time for mumbo jumbo, just straight forward shredding here. these songs are about existential longing for god forsaken roadhouses and weird bohemian parties. Lichen Gumbo is the sound of blasting through the dusty roads of Savo with Pappa-Tunturi. recorded with dictaphones, tape decks, a reel to reel machine and an mp3 player bought from Lidl. from the damaged minds of Olli Aarni (Nuojuva, Ous Mal) and Ville Oinonen (Vo Motars, Tanec Hrac). Blue see-through tapes with full-colour J-cards designed by Anya Kuts. Edition of 100." fon

nuojuva

"Olli Aarni, the young Finnish mastermind behind the Ous Mal project has shed his former skin and settled comfortably into the Nuojuva moniker. his pastoral loops are further enhanced with vocals from Anya Kuts (Love Cult) and Rachel Evans (Motion Sickness of Time Travel)." hooker vision

nuojuva

"As Ous Mal, Olli Aarni’s debut album Nuojuva Halava took the early promise of his cd-r releases into a beautiful realisation of a unique sound that evoked both a curious nostalgia and a sense of future pathways, combining classical overtures, narcotic beats and warm atmospherics into blissful song.

Aarni’s beguiling vision holds sparer focus on Valot kaukaa for a more overtly ambient space filled with delicate instrumentation, including cello, piano, flute and violin, as well as a new interest in the possibilities of voice. Spacey and intimate with wintry and autumnal shades, its whispered melodies and open drift making for an heightened state still somehow grounded in downhome feeling.

The gliding vocal textures of Rachel Evans aka Motion Sickness of Time Travel, as well as one half of duo Quiet Evenings, is a recurring highlight, while Sophie Hutchings’ dazzling, rolling piano propels Laakso into a wonderful orbit.
Honing a special path explored on Nuojuva Halava, Valot kaukaa feels like one long, suspended, beautiful moment." preservation

ous mal

"Even if it wasn't for the song titles you'd still be able to tell this record was Finnish. Like all that country's finest musical exports, be they Hannu or Paavoharju, Ous Mal's recordings carry a certain grainy lo-fi charm, sounding like some gnarled old 78 you might find in an enchanted attic. Vinyl crackle, weird old field recordings and weathered instrumental sequences all come together to make beautiful collages on tracks like 'Meidän Piha', which comes laced with faded string samples, glockenspiel melodies, wispy voices and the tolling of bells from a distant church. The glistening ambience of 'Tähdet' persists with the magic-realist sense of wonderment, sounding a bit like a haunted version of The Avalanches as it makes way for the equally ethereal strains of 'Tumma'. By the time you arrive at closing track 'Ukkonen' (whose curious sonic profile seems to shift from a spectral sea chantey into a demonic ice cream van) you'll be totally hooked on this record's creaky, tuneful and endearingly decrepit constitution. Highly enjoyable Scandinavian lo-fi melodicism from the ascendant Under The Spire imprint, limited to a mere 100 copies. boomkat"
