"the highly promising Sacred Summits label debuts with a reissue of Luis Pérez's private-pressed cosmic obscurity, 'Ipan In Xiktli Metztli'. Beautifully recorded in Mexico, 1981, it offers a mescaline-sharp vision of deep grooving "cosmic ethnography" combining pre-Colombian percussion and wind instruments with electric guitar, tape delay and synths in free-roaming and extended suites. Perez's background in well-known folk ensemble Huayucaltia evidently feeds into this, one of only two known solo albums, but the key descriptor is blatantly psychedelic.

the side opens with a pair of concise, light-footed groovers, all rattlesnake shakers and melodic percussive cadence rent upwards with astral wind instruments and richly evocative nocturnal atmosphere, seemingly preparing us for two extended trips coming off like a prime Jodorowsky soundtrack. the first, 'Etimología Del Nombre Mexico', projects ritualist prog grooves into a haunting soundsphere of synth swirl and chant awash with tape delay and riding the wave between lush ecstasy and abyssal darkness while the 2nd suite, 'Al Culto Solar' peers further still with truly desolate, shivering synth atmospheres pierced by a comforting voice which leads further into the "other" side and a phantasmic array of patterned basslines, demonic wail and utterly mind-blowing synth hallucinations. serious stuff, treat with care for celestial rewards." boomkat

clime

"...what is there left to say about Clime's next level soundscapes that align so nicely with the breath? Along with this release, 12th Rain of the Oscillating Universe, the vibrations on their Space Slave tape inspire the sparks of life. Their music seems to move without a trace, yet one is always ascending - such is the subtle variation which begets their hallucinatory vibe. Entrancing loops bask in the radiant glow, yet continually bloom. A tapestry of sonorous swirling noise and swollen ambience loops a fine web around ones consciousness, seeping in slowly. Around 20 minutes in, bird calls coincide with certain elements dropping into the back of the mix; ethereal and flowery pulsating light moves to the foreground. Soulful rhythms manifest along with a gauzy drone. Various percussion features prominently toward end ~ taking the track to next level. The flipside is much lighter compared to side a; sweetly flowing, soothing vibrations drift unencumbered. There seems to be more space on side b, at least in the beginning, which is lovely. Whether it is side a's rapturous celebration of sound or the flip's gentle tranquility, the synergy between these two sound healers is conspicuous over the entirety." honest bag

kyle landstra

"one thing that's immediately suggested in Kyle Landstra's latest missive, is the fully realized sense of spacial awareness. It's as if you've been transported to a vast mountainous landscape, stretching in all directions. you can feel the calming sound waves flowing over the horizon, through the valleys and into your spirit. there are specific techniques he uses to obtain this effect, and it instantly gives these wisp-like recordings a sense of weight and depth. Kyle's recent live sets around Chicago have been gaining a reputation for being a transcendent, almost spiritual adventure. 'resonant futures' was recorded live in an improvised setting, creating an album that feels like a truly intimate yet boundless experience.

hand-stamped edition of 50. sesigned, printed, assembled, and dubbed at Moss Archive. printed on recycled card-stock." moss archive

branches

"Branches is the musical alter ego of Portuguese Pedro Rios. his most recent project, "Casa Nossa", was recorded mostly over the course of 2013 at his home in Porto. in this new album, we can follow Branches' further quest for the pacifying vistas which were already present in "Ninguém É Como Tu" (considered one of the best cassette releases of 2012 by Impose Magazine). there is a new sense of peace and restraint in tracks like "Inspirar", but also hidden ghost rhythms in pieces like "Yuzu #2", an homage to a Japanese fruit, and exotic guitar parties. this is in fact the first time Mouca releases an album by a Portuguese artist, and we are convinced its magic will safely accompany you through the rest of the winter." mouca

sunhiilow / pine smoke lodge

~ Sunhiilow is Valérie Magisson, an ambient / psychedelic drone musician from Rennes, France. starting in 2011, her music explores landscapes of tribal pulse and mythic lullabies, telling stories about echoes and odd imaginations from the lost cultures. Pine Smoke Lodge are a free-drone duo from Portland, Maine. ~

inner travels

"I recently discovered Lawrence Jordan’s “Winter Light,” and now I think that might have been a better title for the Inner Travels debut. But I chose “First Light” because it means dawn, which is my favorite time of day. Also, it’s the first of what I hope to be many albums of “light” music. Jordan’s 1983 short film, with its sweeping camera movements and hazy, colorful images of nature, evoke the same responses I have to the music of “First Light” ~ warmth, peace, discovery. This is not the kind of winter we have here in Wisconsin, which oscillates from snowfall to subzero chills on a weekly basis. But both winters have their own beauty. The cover image may look like mountains, but it's actually the towering snow banks along Illinois Route 47.   I played keyboards and ran tape loops through outboard effects boxes, twiddling knobs in the hopes that these machines would take me someplace warmer, more tranquil and relaxing, like Jordan’s winter. I hope this album takes all who listen to it there, too." steve targo

"be transported to realms within, and listen as your innermost being dissolves into pure light: the First Light. this radiant energy flows from the eternal essence of Being, and breathes life & harmony into all things ~ it is the very soul of the universe. see that you are the cosmos becoming aware of itself. breathe in, let go. allow Inner Travels to guide you on a journey of deep contemplation and serene revelation immersed in sound tranquility. Enter the Light..." twin springs tapes

strange mountain

soundtrack for a future passed, remembered and forgotten.
recorded and performed : Marcel Thee
style: ambient, new age

Strange Mountain is Marcel Thee (Sajama Cut, Roman Catholic Skulls) from Jakarta, Indonesia

"lush and expansive dreamscapesin. deed as the title would indicate, this selection of tracks offers the beauty one might expect in an ambient release, but tempered with a very measured sense of reservation and thoughtful contemplation. the kind of emotional peace hard won at the ultimate realization of letting go. perhaps I'm seeing to literally into these tracks. at their surface these are enjoyed easily as meditation music, but I think there is more here. not just the act and appreciation of meditation but the rewards of a life spent focused on mindfulness and acceptance. broad wavering lines of synth, softly incorporated found sound. purity." guide me little tape

portopia '81 / 25, 000 kittens

"If Star Wars was a less dark and more light-hearted soap opera in space then Hiroshi Mizuno would be the perfect cast for Luke Skywalker while Michael Rother would be Darth Vader: 'I am your father!' And Hiroshi would be like: 'Yeah, cool, let’s jam!'" sicsic

recorded and performed : Mizuhiro 2014 Winter
style :new age, ambient

inoyama land

"Inoyama Land is a band comprised of ex-Hikasu members Makoto Inoue and Yasushi Yamashita. This is ambient synth music sometimes with simple melodies, pure sounds. It seems to be background music for an exhibit of closeup pictures fungus. There is also a suite Music for Ozone. One track is as early as 1977 and only 3 of the 11 are writing credited to both of the 2 members, most tracks seem to be one or the other. The earlier Hikasu album also with subject of Myxomycetes seems ironic ~ I assume they were both inspired by photographs? The duet did not participate on the Hikashu 1996 album." artcontext

wave temples

deeper ocean, secret island

experimental nature recording new age devotional floating forest secret maps

~ as i embark to new destinations and coming future adventures, the year has come to an end with yet one more humble offering from this magic island. meant only as a conclusion to the previous installments from this year ('keys..' ~ Rainbow Pyramid & 'In the shade' ~ Dept Tapes) ..... 'floating garden / hidden temple' is 32 minutes deeper into the hazy fog of the island… dark pool portals that start at the floating garden, but proceed downward into the abyss of the lake of the hidden temple… through the entrance of the seven prism post outlook… past the 4 headed birds of paradise… bearing witness to the twin serpent shrine at the heart of the thicket… of sacred monkey temples… and the elephant fortress… to bird offerings at the Palace of the Orb Weaver….. and 'hiss of the fang that island shore'… finally reaching the coconut mangrove and marking the departure onward towards Hawaiki….. not really a suggested tape for introductions, but more a map of new secret meeting places here on the inner isle ~ wave temples

silver antlers

No sé, dejémoslo en algo indefinido, como su presentación: "A collection of songs written and recorded for someone, something or somewhere."

"top shelf sci-fi soundscape by Bruce Langhorne, who also did the music for Peter Fonda's The Hired Hand. so much to love here. the turtleneck/underwear ensemble..." toys and techniques

"...throughout the film we get some lovely lilting melodies as well as some dark synth cum from musical polymath and mr. tambo himself, Bruce Langhorne.  there’s some really nice stuff at work in this understated and reserved film and the soundtrack compliments it just terrifically." residual echoes

dolphins into the future

"this is the soundtrack for a film, created for Silver Ghosts, an audio-visual company based in The Hague, The Netherlands. "as canções de pele" is a documentary, tracing the songs and movements of an imaginary volcanic island. it's a film in four chapters, sung by the goddess Pele. as being a Hula Dance, personating certain shapes, forces and lines. the footage was shot between september and december 2011, on the Açores Archipelago. the film was edited, mixed, and provided with a soundtrack, march 2012.

pines

"Zachary Corsa plays a foggy brand of ambient music with his wife as Lost Trail. rooted in the hills of North Carolina, the sound on Pines debut tape ~ Corsa's solo project ~ finds him exploring ghostly folk as processed through mediums. tape sounds hiss and warble, samples cut across and under the fog. slowly a minimal shape is formed, an impression in passing. folk strum and ghosts." patient sounds

lake mary

"I was stoked to get asked to be apart of the Wounded Knife family, and in knowing that they dealt mostly in improvised music, I figured I would stick somewhat to the format, which lead me to choosing, and finishing, these two tracks. Both based on improvisations with classical composer/pianist Eric Rich & the band Inner Oceans. These songs to me, sound like waking up,and in these specific cases, waking up in the mountains of western Colorado or to the Wasatch Mountains of Utah. Typically I stick to the acoustic guitar, but for these songs I don’t think I even picked it up, banjo yes, but this is a rare treat. please take the time to listen to Eric Rich & Inner Oceans as well, for they have changed my life in so many ways." Chaz Prymek
