"a collection of 16 pieces privately released by Norma Lyon in the late 1960s. all are original compositions for piano and organ. dark, moody and dramatic, each of these “sketches” was inspired by a place Ms. Lyon has lived. the tone of the record is set by its fantastic titles, including “Flight of the Spirit Geese,” “Phantom Cathedral of the Sea” and “Dirge of the Sea Gods.” the first side, “Dune Sketches,” is based on a period when she lived amidst the dunes in southwest Oregon. the second side, “Sea Sketches,” is drawn from the time she spent living with her twin sister overlooking the ocean in Coos Bay." little axe

"Norma Lyon was an Oregon, pianist, composer and children's book illustrator. she spent many years living in a small cabin in Hauser around the coastal dunes of Oregon which provided the inspiration for the first side of the record: Dune Sketches. the liner notes detail a series of setbacks for Ms. Lyon including contracting polio and a 1943 car accident which “resulted in the loss of a middle finger and the the thumb above the first joint. Plastic surgery enabled her to regain use of her thumb.” the second side Sea Sketches was inspired by living the last seventeen years in her studio overlooking the sea in Coos Bay. the album had a press run of 1000 copies was probably released in 1968 and Ms. Lyon was hoping that the proceeds from the album would help pay off her mortgage. Ms. Lyons was 58 at the time of the albums release and living with her twin sister. she has a cat named Franz and a dog named Bobby. she was at the time of the article (August 1968) working on a childrens record and book whose narrative was some sort of underwater puppet adventure where “happiness triumphs over tragedy.” backroom

"something of a mystery here... a couple of weeks ago a package arrived at Tuluum Shimmering Recordings headquarters, a box of 12 tapes with a brief note asking if our label would be so kind as to distribute these cassettes. the note was unsigned, and there was no return address. the tapes appear to have been made in 1974, and come with a small 4 page foldout booklet. the booklet reveals the story of a journey by coracle from Polynesia to Wales to prove a theory held by the unnamed author/recordist. the recordings on the tape were apparently made on this journey. I've been unable to find out any more about this tape or the voyage it documents, but we here at TSR are honoured to be able to help it finally see the light of day." tsr

no hay nada que me haga más feliz que esos discos sorpresa que surgen de la nada y tienen historias románticas detrás, como el de Cap'n Jack, Jürgen Müller, Bobby Brown, Eden Ahbez o Tim Robertson. Bobby, Eden y Cap'n Jack existieron. pero ¿y los demás?. sí. no. me da igual. lo que suena es tan bonito que me gusta pensar que sí. es tan grande el poder de sugestión, y seducción, que para mí Jürgen Müller será siempre aquel oceanógrofo alemán cuyo estudio de grabación flotaba sobre el mar. Kon Teifi tiene algo en común con 'aren't you ashamed' y 'science of the sea': cuando los escucho, y por razones distintas, me producen ternura. algo tiene el universo tuluum que hechiza. y Kon Teife está impregnado de ese universo. en 1974 un antropólogo se embarcó en una expedición arqueológica desde Polinesia hasta Gales para demostrar que había sido colonizada, en la más remota antigüedad, por habitantes de las Islas del Pacífico. durante el viaje hizo algunas grabaciones que años más tarde sintió la necesidad de compartir. en la 'cara a' nuestro antropólogo misterioso hace sonar una guitarra  melancólica y tropical sobre unas grabaciones de campo a las que se le unen cánticos tribales. de fondo, una brisa ligera meciendo las palmeras, puedes oler el océano en el aire. en la 'cara b' suena un logo telie, instrumento de madera típico de Niue, isla de Polinesia. al ritmo de un tambor le acompaña una flautilla, pero lo más bonito es el telyn, arpa en galés, que suena un poco a arpa y un poco a xilófono de bambú. el logo telie y el telyn descienden de la misma raíz, tanto linguística como musicalmente. si la misión de la música es la de mostrar mundos inéditos, más allá de la realidad, Kon Teifi nos lleva definitivamente al otro lado del espejo. gracias a Keefe por ir dejando siempre miguitas en el camino, y a Jake por su generosidad (se agotó en un abrir y cerrar de ojos: un poco más y nos quedamos sin ella!).

 daphne oram ~ pop tryouts (was ist das?/mondo hebden, 2015)

"Introducing Mondo Hebden which is the name we are using for releasing archival music (as opposed to Was Ist Das? which is for new music). Our first release really is from the first lady of British electronic music and founder of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop ~ Daphne Oram. It came about because I’ve spent the past 10 months working on a book about the BBC Radiophonic Workshop and ended up at Goldsmiths University going through Daphne’s papers. While I was there I was given the opportunity to listen to her archives and the contents of tape number 037, marked “Pop Tryouts” really struck me.  

It seems to be various different arrangements and takes of the same track, a very melodic part of the “Birds Of Parralax” suite featured on the excellent “Oramics” compilation. Daphne tackles it in a variety of ways including acapella and proto-techno. It was probably made around 1972/1973 as it was for the ballet “Xallaraparallax” which Daphne which Daphne’s paperwork refers to as being worked on in that period. It gives a fascinating glimpse into her working methods and gets the melody very firmly lodged into your memory! Its been gently remastered but the two acoustic tracks have some inevitable room hiss on them. Thank you to the Daphne Oram Trust for making this all possible.

"I still don’t quite know what to make of this after a few years and quite a few listens. According to the liner notes “after 8 years of living in the wilderness of her Adirondack farm” the 1940′s movie starlet was spontaneously inspired to write and record music “as the result of some happening”. Bewildering, right? Well, the sounds housed within the ancient home-pasted jacket are equally puzzling. Aside from the patriotic theme (with unexplained male vocal) that opens the lp, and an esoteric keyboard instrumental, it’s a showcase of “Erica’s” rather inept vocals and Hawaiian guitar playing. Overall it’s a unique and intimate trip with a strange, sometimes creepy vibe, and a few truly inspired moments. The most logical conclusion I’ve come up with is that this was intended as some sort of songwriting demo." waxidermy

"for the past fifteen years, Bobby has stuck with his vision of a "one man show", always creating new instruments and new styles of singing and playing as he went along. Bobby's voice is perhaps his most remarkable instrument. covering a six octave range (possibly the widest range ever recorded) it is capable of creating almost any texture he desires. but his "one man band" orchestra is not to be overlooked. originally composed of about fifty instruments it contained 311 strings and took three hours to set up and tune. instruments varied from a tiny electrified spring to a monstrous fifteen foot electrified drone. some were of original invention, while others were electrified versions of instruments found around the world." from Live liner notes

"this is a bizarro one-man-band from Hawaii who recorded during the mid-seventies. i don't know why this guy's stuff is slowly disappearing from the internet, because it is quite exceptional. it kind of bridges the (albeit large) gap between spaced-out new age drone and psych-folk, with a lot of laid-back Hawaiian influence as well. this album is very odd, sounding kind of like a gamelan orchestra playing 70's folk rock. the story goes that this loner surfer-type guy built this giant....instrument?? I guess?? out of whatever he had laying around. so he literally plays all the sounds you're hearing at once, at least on most of the tracks. you can kind of see his gadget on the cover of his first LP, 'The Enlightening Beam of Axonda,' and it looks basically fucked. he and his dog would travel around in an old van wherever the surfing was good, giving impromptu performances of these strange, mellow songs." obscuro!

"...a few years later, Bobby did a much more pop-oriented album called 'Prayers of a One Man Band.' well...it's "his" interpretation of pop music, which is still pretty odd. it's got a lot of vintage synths and drum machines, and a lot of people seem to feel it's his best release. i dunno about that, but it is very good. the songs are also much shorter, which might appeal to some listeners." obscuro!

no sé si Bobby Brown, surfero y músico extraterrestre de los años setenta, me gusta tanto por el encanto de los discos semi olvidados, porque me recuerda a cap'n jack y no hace falta más o porque desde hace tiempo necesitaba un disco bonito y tranquilo como 'aren't you ashamed?'. Bobby era todo un hombre orquesta, tocaba alrededor de cincuenta instrumentos (arpa, campanas, cítara, instrumentos de viento, sítar, percusión, sintetizadores vintage...), casi todos creados e inventados por él. entre la grabación de su primer disco y 'live', mi favorito, apenas transcurrieron tres horas, o tal vez quince minutos. en la portada aparece una multitud de fans al estilo woodstock, pero en realidad lo grabó en su furgoneta, en la playa, después de quedarse descontento con el resultado de unas grabaciones que hizo mientras abría, y aquí ya me rindo aunque dudo que se verdad, para Fleetwood Mac. con su perrito como única audencia. esas cositas...

las pocas reseñas que he leído lo comparan, no sin razón, con Silver Apples, Tim Buckley y Moondog, pero yo lo relaciono más con David Lannan, George Cromarty, Ted Lucas y..... Cap'n Jack. sin parecerse, comparten ese halo melancólico y atemporal, ese aroma a folk opaco e íntimo, de otra dimensión, una voz entre angelical, spoken word y alucinada. 'in search of a dream', por momentos frágil, por otros espacial, es una preciosidad que habla del amor de su vida, tan bonita y emotiva que dan ganas de llorar, sólo comparable con la primera vez que escuché 'duty free' de Vic Chesnutt. los instrumentos, la intro, los silbidos, la armónica, la percusión como enlatada, el ligero cambio de volumen hacia la mitad, las imperfecciones que restan transcendencia y no hacen más que resaltar el encanto de una voz que tiembla como la de cap'n jack en 'if i never touched you'. leo en algún blog que la baja calidad es un impedimento, pero para mí es todo lo contrario. es la magia cap'n jack. de hecho el tercer disco, además de cambiar el estilo, está más 'producido' (por él mismo) y pierde un poco (pero muy poco) de esa magia. 'hawaii' me recuerda a algún pasaje de los primeros discos de Six Organs of Admittance, son sólo unos segundos, unos rasgueos de algo que podría ser una guitarra...o una harmónica. en 'motherless child' sobrevuela el original con mimo, lo desdibuja con una voz casi gospel. 'let me on board' es reggae, es gospel, es adictiva y divertida. 'my dod is every bit as good as me' no suena, levita, como 'the waterfall of love', el ritmo ralentizado, el macramé de guitarras derritiéndose, la melodía, la percusión de chiste, el aroma casero que lo impregna todo....discos que nunca deberían caer en el olvido y que llegan a ti gracias a una de esas recomendaciones de oca a oca: de alecs pierce a ollie tutty y de ahí a michel krasna.

luis pérez ~ ipan in xiktli metztli, méxico mágico cósmico, en el ombligo de la luna (kopilli, 1981/sacred summit, 2013)

"the highly promising Sacred Summits label debuts with a reissue of Luis Pérez's private-pressed cosmic obscurity, 'Ipan In Xiktli Metztli'. Beautifully recorded in Mexico, 1981, it offers a mescaline-sharp vision of deep grooving "cosmic ethnography" combining pre-Colombian percussion and wind instruments with electric guitar, tape delay and synths in free-roaming and extended suites. Perez's background in well-known folk ensemble Huayucaltia evidently feeds into this, one of only two known solo albums, but the key descriptor is blatantly psychedelic.

the side opens with a pair of concise, light-footed groovers, all rattlesnake shakers and melodic percussive cadence rent upwards with astral wind instruments and richly evocative nocturnal atmosphere, seemingly preparing us for two extended trips coming off like a prime Jodorowsky soundtrack. the first, 'Etimología Del Nombre Mexico', projects ritualist prog grooves into a haunting soundsphere of synth swirl and chant awash with tape delay and riding the wave between lush ecstasy and abyssal darkness while the 2nd suite, 'Al Culto Solar' peers further still with truly desolate, shivering synth atmospheres pierced by a comforting voice which leads further into the "other" side and a phantasmic array of patterned basslines, demonic wail and utterly mind-blowing synth hallucinations. serious stuff, treat with care for celestial rewards." boomkat

"Inoyama Land is a band comprised of ex-Hikasu members Makoto Inoue and Yasushi Yamashita. This is ambient synth music sometimes with simple melodies, pure sounds. It seems to be background music for an exhibit of closeup pictures fungus. There is also a suite Music for Ozone. One track is as early as 1977 and only 3 of the 11 are writing credited to both of the 2 members, most tracks seem to be one or the other. The earlier Hikasu album also with subject of Myxomycetes seems ironic ~ I assume they were both inspired by photographs? The duet did not participate on the Hikashu 1996 album." artcontext

"been listening to this gorgeous gold-framed Italian record of underwater film music. the title translates as "Life and Work in the Water." don't know much about Franco Potenza, but I love records like this and how they conjure up a whole imaginary world just with simple instruments and ancient electronic effects. this one is eerie and strangely therapeutic, sort of in the vein of Eric Towren's Zenith, which is another great subaquatic record. and I was just looking at this great Pinterest page (Jonny Trunk's?) of rare underwater library records. check out the soundclip or dive in here." toys and techniques
