smolnik & schlienz

  smolnik & schlienz ~ smolnik & schlienz (cosmic winnetou, 2021)

"teresa smolnik delivers her stories with alto voice and proper cries, with spoken words and quiet whispers, with eloquent passion and deep human wisdom. günter schlienz delivers his modular emissions and tape wrengling madness. together they walk into surreal landscapes full of hate and anger, love and redemption. voice & synth mash-up on colored vinyl. for your stereo, for your mind."

 teresa smolnik, voice; günter schlienz, synthesizer, tape machine, field recording, found sound.

 "Is all that we see or seem but a dream within a dream? Teresa Smolnik and Guenter Schlienz push thoughts to this question posed by Edgar Allan Poe over one hundred and seventy years ago. Music formed from ambient drifts. Sonic mass shaped like mountains reaching misty pinnacles of piano notes drifting away into the atmosphere. Stories softly sung and spoken, whispering thoughtful observations with a love filled emotion for the most obscure details. Birds chirping on communication lines, unaware of countless conversations of joy and sorrow beneath their talons. This composition simply titled Smolnik & Schlienz gently ignites the fractures of reality. The glowing details of small cracks and crevices reveal infinite worlds within minuscule dimensions. Inner beauty asking listeners to hear the dreams within and question who is listening to us.

...this is a cosmic winnetou release in a very limited edition of one hundred. very surprised to be describing this composition and still have copies available to purchase. the vinyl is transparent with multi colored splatter. a beautifully done album in both presentation and sound." lost in a sea of sound

N Chambers ~  Palms/La Mer/Horizons (Cosmic Winnetou, 2022)

 "I know where Norm Chambers lives because I have visited him. In his lovely house with a big garden surrounding it. We had a barbeque there, right besides the magic hut. This hut is emitting music since decades. Nobody ever investigated this miracle. Norm just patts his dog and smiles.

It is time to celebrate norm's outstanding electronic music. now and forever." Günter Schlienz

~ for the better future ~

Greetings, dear friends of the Microphones, we hope you are well and wish you and your beloved ones a safest scenario possible through all the dangers of today's situation. As always and even more than usual we believe that music is a perfect inspiration and a tool to keep your mind clean and open, to see through all the mist, to be well in body and spirit and keep moving towards the better future of humanity! Below is a selection of tunes we've been enjoying recently and wanted to share with you and hope you'll love them and share further. Sharing is caring and love is the way =)

 "Each of these pieces was edited down from long improvisations at home, recorded late at night during October 2019. No computers, no multi-tracks, no sequencers, no overdubs" ~ solar cell kid

Gentle minimalist meanderings of synth arpeggios, vivid drones and transparent pads. Freely flowing jams of calm contemplation, the glimpses of summer childhood memories, careless joy of simply being... Music which is like air or water ~ just emerging from infinity for a while to simply go back into nowhere again, yet leaving a pleasant afterglow in your neurons. A must-listen for fans of Deep Magic or Sundrips kind of jam. Calming yet playful enough to keep you awake, watching your own movies on the backs of your eyelids.

"tristan likes the limits of one single vintage keyboard combined with a four track tape recorder. he says that the pedals are crucial, and he likes to stare out of the window while playing his music. so much to discover." synthesizer music to be played on your walkmen while wandering through inner worlds. watch the steps while humming along." ~ cosmic winnetou

A new offering of warm and soulful synth tunes from Cosmic Winnetou (we highly recommend getting the whole batch), featuring new jams by Tristan Magnetique whose synth drones and minimal textures are collaged here with some field recordings, apparently found sounds from tapes or TV/radio, building a hazy yet comforting vision of some distant times/places, existing probably just in one's head and at the same time in the infinite number of parallel universes. And who knows, are those fruits of Tristan's imagination or they are visions of those worlds, approaching through music, using it as a higher-dimensional portals... And if Tristan is an imaginary persona too, then how many layers of imagination we are dealing here with? And how many of them we can create ourselves... One may wonder, of course ~ and this tape offers a best soundtrack for that kind of activities.

With love, in love, we hold a vision of higher harmony and unity. A paradise of communion and compassion among all beings, with cooperative consciousness informing our relationships with each other and the natural world that fosters us. ~ flower room

With this offering from the evergreen gardens of Flower Room Records we enter the vibrational spaces of meditative bliss produced with droning synths, psych-folkish guitars and beautiful reverberations taking your mind to a journey to the center of yourself which (of course) coincides with the center of the universe, if you dare to go deep enough. With these sounds and a proper mindset it becomes as easy as breathing ~ which is a treasure in times like these. Full of anahatic bliss, this album can be used in many ways actually, as it just soaks everything with love and harmony. Set you doubts and skepticism aside for a moment and plunge deep into these syrupy envelopes of the green! And when you done swimming, be sure to check out the Chakra series of guided meditations released at Flower Room through the past several months ~ it's a top notch material for further self-explorations and balancing your life.

dang olsen dream tape ~ into theta
(
plastic response records, 2020)

"Our journey here has timebinded elements that span the breadth of our current Dream Tape's incarnation. Sounds that were captured even before this incarnation's inception, just like all the events that happened before you were born that somehow have given your existence a shape, like a tree growing thru a fence, like the cosmic resonance that holds an atom together. Close your eyes, breathe the love of the lovers breath and Dream Forever"~ plastic responce rec.

For his new album, Dang Olsen (whose tape you could probably remember from Constellation Tatsu catalog) created a more refined and serene landscape of beautifully arranged patterns of playful melodies, loops, spatial effects and other things which seem to happen not just in headphones or speakers but partially in your head. At least it feels so in like 5 minutes in and further. Elusive vibes which still keep you gliding slowly through the slightly warped visions and exotic sensations. Staying on a bit weirder side than usual new age tape, it's still a pretty nice soundtrack to finding an inner peace and just being there for a while ~ to see that world didn't fell apart while you was out of it.

"Voyage Futur is a project from Vienna, influenced by the valley of the sun, the sounds of the dawn, the ever expanding universe and 80s reverberations."

And to bring you back to earth ~ yet, to a better earth, which may probably seem utopian but will always be real for those who dare to dream and look into the future with an optimism ~ a new album by Voyage Futur whose debut tape on New Atlantis and No Problema labels immediately put the project among the classics of the modern new age music. This album has everything you could ask from ambient music in a time like now ~ serenity, playfulness, dreaming haze of the 80s, percussive vibe of the tropical mirages and, of course, cosmic presence above it all. No wonder it was sold in minutes but we can always hope for a reissue, enjoying the digital files meanwhile. From the arps and pads of Inner Shpere the warmth and hazy light are radiating, creating indeed some kind of capsule or maybe a magical cocoon to take you on a travel through the multiverse, to the possible timelines of our evolution as a species, showing the more harmonious scenarios we may take if we keep raising planetary awareness... Actual as ever and especially now, this mood is set lightly ~ and can be easily shifted towards whatever your soul want actually, and that's the beauty of this records, it lives its own life as an organism so each time you tune in with it, it tells you something new.

inspired school of astral music

"Inspired School of Astral Music somehow has connected to my brain. It’s the “astral” part, isn’t it, the unknowable spiritual dimensionality that allows linkage without a physical bond. How else would Inspired School come to the same conclusion as me, that “it is possible to experience the music from beyond within, and voice this experience through a musical instrument”? I’ve been saying that for, like, ever! Well, not in so many words, but definitely a variation. Reading that then listening to “Seekers” has kind of validated a lot of what I believe about music. Or at least my online persona believes it, since in reality I’m just a collection of computer coding masquerading as a human presence on social media and music sites for some reason. (Or maybe I’m a demon-possessed laptop. Who’s to say for sure?)

Inspired School of Astral Music exposes the inner melodies calmly attempting to guide us through life, manifesting as droning synthesizer with exquisite solos to keep our attention. The trancelike repetition is underscored with pulsing energy, truly giving the impression that it pipes in from another plane of existence. Also, each track is (at least digitally – there are no track titles listed on the physical product itself) dedicated to someone or something: “For D.,” “For C.,” “For L.,” “For G.,” “For A.” This gives “Seekers” an extra sense of camaraderie and interconnectedness, that the music filtering through the Inspired School is just that – filtered, not owned, freely given to those who deserve or require it. It’s not for us, it’s for you. It’s not for me, it’s for them. It’s not for ISoAM, it’s for D., and C., and L., and G., and A., and everybody else. I’d argue that it might not be for me, being a bot and all (or a demon), but probably nobody’s going to think about that very much after reading this. They’ll be too busy getting a psychic massage from the Inspired School of Astral Music tape they just bought."

günter schlienz

"the concept around those tracks is relatively loose. first i was fascinated by the idea of how jules lissajous made acoustic vibrations visible in his experiments. i think this has a vibe of synaesthesia, so some pieces are an attempt to transform certain memories and the associated emotions into sound.furthermore, the projections lissajous made in the 19th century must had been very pretty and i'm fascinated by the fact that we perceive integer mathematical relationships as nice, no matter if perceived acoustically or optically. so i did the drones which can be heard on this album rather optically than musically, i took a look at the lissajous image of the drones in the oscilloscope and then decided if i would use it. i also love all these enlightened natural scientists of the 18th and 19th centuries. they were really crazy in a way that seems almost funny to us today. real freaks.so for me this album feels like a bit of a self-propagation with a twinkle in the eye." günter schlienz

interview with guenter schlienz

Guenter Schlienz (Stuttgart, Germany) is known for his vast catalogue of tape & cdr releases on different great labels around the world – Sacred Phrases, SicSic, Goldtimers, Constellation Tatsu, etc. He is the man behind wonderful Cosmic Winnetou label, releasing all kinds of experimental/drone/ambient artists — maybe not as frequently as we'd like, but each time pleasing the taste of any tape music geek. Creating his minimalist compositions by means of d.i.y modular synths, tape loops and field recordings, Guenter achieves the serenity of classic ambient works, while keeping the vibe of 70s kosmische musik (think Cluster or Harmonia) and sometimes reaches the territories of academic minimalism, exploring the sound as ding an sich, inspiring the listener to invent its own narrative. Being part of Navel band since mid 90s, Guenter's place in music world has a long, but still almost unknown story which continues nowadays with further explorations of all kinds of ambient music.

~~~
Pied Paper: First of all, I'm curious about how it all started for you — ambient music, synth building, tape releases, etc. I know that you were involved in many other projects before, call you tell a bit about them too?
GS: phew, where did it all started… definitely many many moons ago. was active mid till end 90s in some heavy stoner psychedelic rock band. was the guy responsible for producing some "far out sounds" with his guitar and some delay pedal. so there already was this drone element in what i did. but far from recognizing it as this for myself. bit later during the same decade i did a session with a guy who did guitar and singing for another noise rock outfit. we just fiddled around with our guitars and with every pedal we could get our hands on. we recorded our very first session with some broken 4track and quite liked the results. after presenting the finished cdr people came back and reported "this is quite cool drone music". so yep, that's how we learned the name of this style. and after having the name we were able to dig deeper and learned names like Stars of the Lid, Flying Saucer Attack, Brian Eno etc pp. this guitar drone project of us is called Navel and we are still recording and doing live shows.
beginning of the 00's i quit doing this rock band stuff, so there was plenty time to do some other things. after getting introduced to all this amazing kraut and kosmische musik (during a navel live show in france by an english man, but that's another story) there was the idea to do some kind of electronic music solo. so i needed an instrument, and after bit of research i discovered that the schematics for some modular synthesizer would be something i could manage with the training in electronics i already had. so i started soldering, first quite simple filters, later more and more sophisticated modules.
the tapes, yep, fast forward to the end of last decade. stumbled over this tape scene thing by accident via the internet (god bless it). those days i was pretty frustrated and bored by the music all the labels and magazines i knew presented, so this occurred to me like a big relief. yes. so many people and projects and bands and labels are doing fantastic stuff, exactly the music i love, right at the moment, and sell it for very low money to people all around the world. yes! couldn't belief my eyes. that the favorite medium of all those labels and projects were cassettes don't really bothered me (of course i had this "ugh? on tape? strange…" moment like everybody else i guess), because i never really stopped using this media since my early childhood days.
I like to dramatize a bit some things some times, but this discovery of the tape label scene kind of saved my artistic live. it gave me so much energy and confirmation and countless hours of joy during listening sessions that i got the feeling that i have to give something back. hence i started my own tape label.
Pied Paper: Your music sounds almost academic sometimes, especially works as Organ Studies, Loop Studies and Furniture Sounds — which, as I understand is a homage to Eric Satie. But your name is strongly associated with "underground tape scene", as we call it. Did you ever thought about making your music open for the interpretations, to write it down on a paper maybe, letting the others perform it?
GS: huh, not sure if i my music sounds bit like academic music. for sure i'm quite interested in this genre, mean contemporary composers with "classical" musical education composing pieces for concert halls and operas and stuff. like their approach to their art through quite rigid concepts, their huge knowledge about musical structures and about music of many centuries and cultures. perhaps you see my enthusiasm for their rigidness shining through my stuff? that would be a compliment for sure, at least in my opinion. and of course, if there would be a small ensemble crazy enough to perform it, i would love to write a score for them (though not sure if i would like to conduct it). but i guess your name must be some lou reed or some other in the same league to be honored like this. actually i'm pretty sure that many of those academic contemporary composers would be happily release their stuff on tape if they would only know this special scene around it.
Pied Paper: It's clear that ambient music is a wide field for interpretation, same sound can be perceived in different ways depending on the artwork, liner notes, track titles, etc. Can you tell something about your own perception of your music? Does it have some stories within, or it's just abstract form which everyone can fill with its own meaning?
as you see in the answer of the last question i like some kind of concept around the music. and if this concept even gets its visual equal with the artwork i'm more than happy. so of course, there is a story in every piece. but hey, its music, its a form of art, so who am i to dictate what some listener and spectator wants to see in it? isn't it the very meaning of any art, that the consumer of it knits his very personal meaning to it?
actually i am not able to describe what i hear in my music anyway. for me the answer to this question would lead to some kind of poem, some painting, some huge novel, some dance or any other arty abstraction. in none of the mentioned techniques 'm very good at, so please, listen to the music.
Pied Paper: Imagine a situation when you someone asks you to create music with specific mood, theme, etc. — like for a movie scene or something — would it be easy for you? What you enjoy more - improvisation or composition?
already did this, i mean creating some music for a specific use (to earn some money), and hey, that is pretty hard work (and hard earned money)! to create some music without some customers needs to be satisfied, just the personal ones, isn't really easy to do as well, but much more gratifying for the soul. its an privilege to be able to do this, and i have a (pretty time consuming) bread and butter job to create the circumstances to fulfill it.
can't really separate those strategies during my performances, both live and during my recording sessions. its always a mixture of plan and being ready to include some coincidences respectively enlightenments. actually my believe is, gained through many observations and talks about such things, that nearly every work in which i am interested in is created this way.
Pied Paper: I know that you enjoy recording outdoor, do you have any specific set-up for this?
not really specific, the equipment just have to have some possibility to work battery driven. luckily my modulars fall into this category. just to improve the handling of such adventure i have build my modulars as small and compact as possible, and since a couple of months a work on some modules who will be included into some water proofed case.
Pied Paper: Probably you've noticed that releases of first wave of cassette drone/ambient in 2009-11 was mostly lo-fi and many of same artists still doing tapes nowadays came to much cleared and well-produced sound - is that natural growth or trying to be more "mainstream"?
yes, i'm aware of this development as well. i think it just was some other group of people with bit different background which had been running those labels you' mention. In those early days of the reemerging of this medium the leading actors had had mostly a background in the noise scene. hence the tape as favorite medium, hence the cheap and ugly aesthetics of the chosen instruments. these different (don't like to ad some other evaluative adjective) sounding tapes of lately are from people without this background, they just take over the torch and work with it out of their musical socialization. so in my opinion it is either "natural growth", this sounds like some kind of improvement who isn't any need for, nor a try to reach broader audiences. the good stuff of recently is produced by people who are just as true to their own style as their ancestors had been, and therefore it is as important and equal beautiful as the old stuff.
Pied Paper: As a label owner, can you tell how many demos you receive? Which kind of styles you receive most? I'm asking because it seems that ambient/psych/drone music isn't that popular anymore - I see tons of vaporwave/webpunk tapes at new-born labels, while such imprints as Stunned, Tranquility tapes, Goldtimers are long gone (or maybe it's just old man's talk, huh).
yes, and i'm very happy about it, i receive quite a lot of demos. always love to get some new sounds for my ears. mostly the artists are very good informed about the style of the music i usually release and about the aesthetics i'm interested in. perhaps you are right, there are less people out there which do their own style of ambient/psych/drone as perhaps eight years ago, but i'm not sure about that. and as i stated in the last paragraph i think those vaporwave labels and the like took the torch of the cassette celebration and run with it their own way. and this is a good thing. who needs the 16th or whatever version of the emeralds (insert here the name of your favorite release of those years)? isn't this exactly what have happened with pop and rock music and what makes this stuff sometimes unbearable to listen to?
Pied Paper: And what are your plans for the Cosmic Winnetou in the foreseeable future?
prepare my next batch right now which will be released in a couple of weeks. but after this 13th cosmic winnetou bundle of cassettes i will need a hiatus, unfortunately. i love to do the label work, but it is very time consuming. have lots of projects for this year, music and private stuff, so i have to pull the brakes to this project for this year. but really looking forward to restart the tape label with new ideas and energies end of this year.
Pied Paper: Do you ever think about future of music? Is it possible to invent something new, or we are doomed to retro-mania, returning to same tunes from different angles?
of course there will some day somebody release some music which haven't been heard before and will blow all of us completely into the void. don't know which day this will happen, but i'm pretty sure someday it will. just look around, not only the music is stuck into retro mode. clothing, hair style, performing arts, pictorial arts, industrial design, i think that in our days nearly every form of artefacts are done with quite old ideas, just a few new kind of tools here and there. the whole mood, you can call it "zeitgeist" if you like, is like "let's try to preserve what we have", not "perhaps this is a better idea for the future, let's work on it". in my opinion everything is linked together somehow, and we have this retro mania since the 90s, starting with this global change of the modus vivendi. but nothing is forever, so i'm sure this will change someday. these thoughts are just my 50cents about a very complex question. but yeah, i think about this, and love to exchange ideas about this kind of topic.
Pied Paper: Humans already sent some music with space probes - which titles would you choose for such mission? I know you won't choose Wagner, huh :)
really nice question, this is. indeed already thought about that, and i think the nasa did a quite good job with the "golden record" for the voyager mission. very good selection which shows how wonderfully diverse sounds humans are able to produce, and each and all of them aim at the listeners heart. but always wondered if it would be perhaps a good idea to send some field recordings of this strange planet into the void, and f so, which i would chose.
some people laughing, some people fighting, a mother singing her baby to sleep, the audience at a soccer game, a sundown at the shore of a calm sea with waves and cicades and everything? what else?
Pied Paper: Okay, that's it — you can send high fives here or add something if needed! Thank you!
hey, high five to you and many thanks for those questions! took my a while to type the answers, because you found some topics and ideas i love to share my thoughts on it. and of course many thanks for your support!
perhaps i would like to ad a big "thank you" to all the readers of those lines, time is precious and i'm happy that you waste it reading them. and a big "thank you" to all the people who listen to my music and perhaps even bought the cassettes and cds and vinyls with my music on it. to know that somebody out there cares about my music means a lot to me. hugs.
demonstration synthesis / mathias grassow / dayin
"releasing drone and ambient music since almost forty years, Mathias Grassow has developed his very distinctive style. long lasting tracks which hum themselves into the listener's subconsciousness, mesmerising angelic overtones mixed with haunting deep drones to forget present space and time. for the cosmic winnetou release, his first one on cassette since the late nineties, mathias encapsuled the essences of his musical magic into pieces with running time between two and fifteen minutes. surprisingly those short tracks makes you even more forget where and who you are and transform your inner selve into some kind of zen saint mode. how he does this? don't know, but make sure to regard the advice of the master himself: "I’m sure you’ll find answers not in words, but in deep listening with your heart!"
demonstration synthesis ~ ds20 (cosmic winnetou, 2015)
"Daniel James Leznoff is not from this world. to release twenty albums in one year is some kind of extraterrestrial achievment. even more so because all of his albums reach an extra high level of quality. early 80s synth lines dancing like crazy with each other, unforgettable melodies over and over on each and every track, moody short pieces crafted with adorable inspiration. the cosmic winnetou release is of course not an exception, even more so it seems that with every release daniel is able to increase his ability to blow us away, out of this world, into his space. be part of this ongoing musical wonder and buy this tape!"
 dayin ~ letting go of people (cosmic winnetou, 2015)
"letting go of people is an album about humans you wish you never met. their voices are echoing inside, answering words you wish you never had to say. these thirty minutes, sliced into seven pieces are a reminder of not only all wrong choices you have ever made, but also of those mistakes, which are yet to follow. Dayin is harsh drone and regret, but mostly a relief. " heavenly drones to pacify your misanthropic feelings. these days everybody's need."
es imposible, utópico... la avalancha de música a la que me gustaría dedicarle unas palabras no tiene fin. pero siempre habrá un hueco para las hornadas de Cosmic Winnetou. qué mejor forma de festejar la primavera que con otra golosina de Demonstration Synthesis. la incontinencia creativa de James Daniel Leznoff (estudiante, profesor, artista, compositor) trasciende cualquier explicación: con ésta hacen nada menos que veinte cintas. en menos de un año. y todo apunta a que habrá muchas más. ya lo dice Günter, Daniel no es de este mundo. no tanto por la cantidad, sino por la calidad. 'líneas de sinte ochentero bailando como locas entre ellas, melodías inolvidables una y otra vez en cada canción, emotivas piezas cortitas elaboradas con adorable inspiración.' preciosa 'curtain call', pero más preciosas todavía 'new sketches' y 'trance', suaves como la brisa, juguetonas, evocadoras. Daniel no sólo vive entregado a la música (su pasión) sino también al mundo del collage
...veinte son también los años que Mathias Grassow lleva tocando cuencos tibetanos y flautas hindús en ragas y tonadillas ambient. 'short stories', su primera cinta de cassette desde finales de los noventa, tenía que ser en el hogar de su amigo Günter Schlienz. estas pequeñas historias son casi dos horas de ambient drone fluído, elegante, dividido en canciones, trocitos de canciones, entre dos y quince minutos de duración cada una. la 'cara b' es lo más parecido a la sensación de despertarse despacio de una siesta con un rum rum celestial. la música ideal para quemar incienso y darnos cuenta de que, como me insiste la filomeluna montañas, la meditación será la cura definitiva de todos nuestros males y preocupaciones. de hecho 'himalaya' se utiliza a menudo para fines terapéuticos. por mucho que pasen los años y las modas, los drones y el ambient curativo serán para siempre.
y por último 'letting go of people' de Dayin. dejar ir a las personas. con ese título casi me tiene ganada. difiere un poquito, o en realidad no tanto (tiene mucho en común con Innercity, Creation VI y The Baijkonour Ghost) de las cintas que suele publicar Cosmic Winnetou. y de las tres es tal vez de la que más lejos me sentía al principio, para al final acabar rendida y enamorada de 'i never thought', pero sobre todo de 'time has holes' (muy muy oculto, pero hay algo que me recuerda a 'science of the sea') y la tensísima 'you don't exist' (ese latido...). todas empiezan suavito y acaban derivando en una cascada de ambient drone monolítico, rústico, enxebre, profundo. 'please, don't' lo desborda todo, estremece: delirando un poco... algo así como las voces de nuestros antepasados sepultadas bajo un maremagnum de drones. "letting go of people' trata sobre esas personas que desearías no haber conocido nunca. sus voces resuenan en tu interior, respondiendo palabras que desearías no haber dicho. treinta minutos divididos en siete canciones, un recordatorio no sólo de las malas decisiones, sino también de los errores cometidos. Dayin es drone penetrante y arrepentimiento, pero sobre todo una válvula de escape." muy muy intenso. no desentonaría en Pantheon, el sello de Tim Six. tampoco en Dronarivm. como se suele decir, uno de esos discos-experiencia que requieren una inmersión completa.
"guitar and synths droning you into the bliss of a perfect evening. everything is just on its place, your breathing is slow and steady, your mind wander into the landscape of wonderful memories. just one thing disturbs your tranquil mood: the tape will be over in a minute. would you be so kind to share this perfect moment with me? would you be so nice to rewind the tape?"
"recorded over 8 months in 2013 and 2014, haruspex is the third full length release by the brooklyn/philadelphia based glass house.  consisting of two side-long pieces written for various electronic, stringed and percussion instruments, the album follows the trajectory set by the duo's previous effort, keeping to the void. here, dense drones oscillate between moods both light and dark, punctuated by heavily processed field recordings and an undercurrent of musicality that implies influences ranging from doom metal to classical."
muy agradecida y feliz al recibir las tres nuevas cintas de Cosmic Winnetou, el sello de Günter Schlienz, auténticas delicatessen decoradas para la ocasión (hornada otoñil fugaz porque ya están agotadas) con los collages comestibles de Sean Gadoury. Cosmic Winnetou edita pocas cintas pero qué cintas.
...y si hay una cinta emocionante (y una portada-flechazo) en la discografía emocionante de Cosmic Winnetou, es este split de Deep Catalogue y Sunroom. 'a soft breeze' de Sunroom (Dash Lewis de Gardener y David Grubba de Paciens Trine) suena como su título, una marea de trigo mecida por la suave brisa del atardecer. planeadora, mullida, tan bonita y aterciopelada como la musicalidad de las palabras soft y breeze, como esa niña flotando-levitando en un cielo estrellado. no desentonaría en un disco de versiones de Steve Roach en el que también estarían Günter Schlienz y Buchikamashi. la simbiosis soñada del new age celestial de Buchikamashi y el minimalismo microcelular de Günter Schlienz: "drones de guitarra y sintetizador sumergiéndote en la felicidad de una noche perfecta. todo encaja, todo está en su sitio, tu respiración es lenta y constante, tu mente se recrea en paisajes de recuerdos placenteros. sólo hay una cosa que disturbia tu tranquilidad: la cinta se acabará en un momento. ¿serías tan amable de compartir este momento idílico conmigo? ¿serías tan amable de rebobinar la cinta?."
después de la burbuja calentita de Sunroom, 'hesperides' de Deep Catalogue (Sunny Dunes, Sylvia Monnier) es como salir a la superficie. Mika Pérez propone  un juego de deconstrucción constante. acordes  de una guitarra oceánica que recuerda a Mark McGuire, ritmos densos y poderosos tan característicos del sonido sunny dunes, latidos que salen del interior de una caja en los que siempre es posible encontrar minúsculos destellos de melodía. y después ritmos tribales, ligeramente kraut, ligeramente Bitchin Bajas. y a partir de ahí todo transcurre por la senda habitual hasta que el círculo se completa: un sintetizador nos lleva de vuelta al clima y la temperatura de 'soft breeze'.
¿os acordáis de 'savage times' de Glass House en SicSic Tapes? 'haruspex' sigue su estela y la supera en belleza. hay música cuya dimensión es casi imposible explicar: tienes que experimentarla, sumergirte en ese cambio mágico que ocurre en el minuto 6:34 de la 'cara a'. 'haruspex' es tensión sostenida, nocturnidad y alevosía, misterio, la mirada aérea. suena la 'cara a' y me imagino un gran órgano de iglesia suspendido en el cielo tocado por un monje benedictino. la cara b es puramente mineral, con drones arenosos cual tormenta de invierno en la playa. me encanta la música en la que parece que llueve sin parar, ese clima que sea crea, donde, sin tener ni una gota de grabaciones de campo, casi puedes sentir la humedad y el viento.
disco a disco, un poco ajeno a esa escena que él mismo ayudó a crear, Norm Chambers revive la electrónica de tiempos pasados y la revitaliza, nunca se agota, hace convergir el kosmische alemán con esa electrónica saltarina de ritmos, ruiditos y plunderphonics que caen en cascada de, por ejemplo, Giant Claw o Ben Vida. es un sonido de otra era, es 1980 otra vez, pero no puede sonar más cristalino y contemporáneo. lejos del simple ejercicio de nostalgia, canciones como 'ictus vector', 'topiary island' (me encanta la melodía que subyace bajo el crepitar acuático) o 'cave tech' (líquida  y espumosa como 'digest of botanicals') palpitan dinámicas e hipnóticas reivindicando los patrones clásicos del ambient primigenio, minimalista e impecable, robótico y cálido. 'wasteland cycle' es como una gran banda sonora, un guiño sci-fi a los cómics en desiertos futuristas de Moebius. ciencia ficción en paisajes inmensos y abandonados que sueño con fotografiar. y 'dune' es oro puro, ochentera, operística, in crescendo, una oda estética a  John Carpenter...hasta puedo imaginarme un split con Yves Malone y Steve Moore. "no importa donde estés, ya sea en un inmenso y remoto desierto olvidado o en un pequeño motel de carretera con un perro que no deja de ladrar al lado, vives en tu propio y perpetuo ciclo existencial. vuelves a casa e inmediatamente formas parte de ella, como si nunca te hubieses ido. esto es un diario de viaje del subconsciente viviendo esas experiencias; pequeñas viñetas, recuerdos de lugares, voces arbitrarias, perspectivas distorsionadas, rituales rutinarios y desganados ... ".
pulse emitter
"lovely synth stuff to lose yourself into it. recommended for listening sessions with sunbeams on your skin. but its magic works without that too, promise."
"portland based synthesizer obsessor Daryl Groetsch toted his gear into his backyard last august for an outdoor session. this was the first time Pulse Emitter recorded outside. “it was very inspirational. it’s normal i guess for an acoustic musician to take their stuff outside but not so much for electronic musicians”. Groetsch said about the jam. “i had actually played an outdoor fest right around the same time and got a taste of it then. something about seeing the sky and plants while playing is good. the music was improvised using a setup that has become my new favorite way of playing, i’ve done more inside recordings in this style since. playing outside is definitely different with the sun beating down on you and your instruments, and ants crawling over everything, and flying insects, but it’s all part of the experience”. tabs out
que alguien me pellizque... era muy difícil abandonar la isla de x.y.r. y salir de la burbuja calentita del split de Atrocious Neighbour, Obsidian Pond y Komodo Haunts, pero ante algo tan irreal como 'outdoor session', de verdad que sólo puedo dar las gracias. nada que no fuera mágico podía esperarse de una sesión al aire libre publicada en cosmic winnetou, el contexto, el lugar, el momento, pero es que estoy literalmente enamorada de estas seis canciones, una entrañable declaración de amor al Universo, a la naturaleza y a la Tierra. si cambiamos las plantas y el cielo de Oregon por las playas de Normandía, es inevitable pensar en 'the norman tapes' de Günter Schlienz. es verdad que tengo predilección por este tipo de música y su capacidad para construir pequeños refugios, y que me iría con estas seis canciones al fin del mundo, pero si 'crater lake' era ya un escándalo, 'outdoor session' traza con tal nitidez un mapa del aquí y el ahora del ambient más campestre ("la naturaleza es cósmica"), que me atrevo a decir que lo es mucho más. me parece una cinta cercana, una caricia, uno de esos regalos minúsculos de escucha reposada por el que sientes un especial cariño. de temperatura más cálida, más orgánico, más ensoñador, más espacioso, más sutil y lleno de matices, Daryl Groetsch sigue creciendo, consolidando su estilo con vaporosas canciones que se acercan al cosmos con la misma estética aérea y amplitud de campo que 'the norman tapes'.
'sun bleached' es el título de la primera canción, una miniatura ejecutada bajo el sol, con sintes cual helicópteros que se acercan y se alejan. naturaleza, cosmos, ambient y new age del de toda la vida. delicada, circular, ondulante, emocionante. de fondo, el campo. 'pink sky flying', íntima, me lleva muy lejos... es un esbozo de nana para teclados tocados por Brian Eno y Steve Roach. de fondo, el cosmos. más al fondo, una melancolía y una paz indescriptibles, como de jinete perdiéndose en el horizonte cegado por el sol. 'airwaves' ...ay, 'airwaves'. ¿os acordáis de 'hermits'? 'airwaves' multiplica su belleza por mil. las notas fluyen como un torrente, como una cascada, y hay que ser un maestro para conducirlas por una montaña rusa sin perder ninguna por el camino. de cuando una melodía celestial quiere llevarte de viaje y lo consigue. en 'positive motion' me rindo, Pulse Emitter hace tantas cosas, y las hace tan bien... imagina una emocionada y emocionante melodía equiparable a la canción más bonita que puedas encontrar en el recopilatorio de 'i am the center: private issue new age music in america 1950-1990'. 'bubbles in glass' es el cielo, si alguna vez soñaste con un encuentro entre Jürgen Müller y Günter Schlienz, esta burbujeante tonadilla lo hace realidad. pero entonces llega el final, un mantra ambiental de trasfondo zen titulado 'on the veldt', y ya sí que me quedo muda. es mi favorita y, aunque suene cursi, es una caricia para los sentidos. y lo es gracias a un sintetizador viajero, puro, espiritual, tan Buchikamashi navegando por la vía láctea.
'outdoor session' es una cinta de puro éxtasis ambiental, un tacto luminoso y cristalino recorre el disco... no sé, coge un bote, rema mar adentro y deja que el sol y el vaivén de las olas hagan todo lo demás. yo lo diré sin miedo: otra de mis cintas cósmicas del universo favoritas del año, casi se puede decir que entre las diez primeras o incluso entre las cinco. porque de principio a fin, todo en 'outdoor session' deja sin aliento. ahora sólo nos queda esperar con ilusión, como decía Fran hace poco en su reseña de 'crater lake', la próxima cinta en Constellation Tatsu. escuchando 'light from distant stars' tengo la sensación de que seguirá la senda de 'outdoor session'. qué bonita. pero bonita es decir poco. inconmensurable.
postdata: a veces, compruebas con felicidad que existen personas verdaderamente especiales. llegar a casa, abrir el buzón y encontrarte sin ni siquiera imaginarlo con un paquetito de cosmic winnetou con las tres cintas de su última hornada... no hay palabras. quiero hacer hincapié en ello, a Günter lo queremos, por vivir en su burbuja, por su humildad, por ser una rara avis entrañable, siempre atento y agradeciendo cualquier minúscula referencia a su nombre, a su sello, cualquier mínima aportación. ahí, en la sombra :)
former selves / aloonaluna / innercity / creation VI
"there is a poem from a childhood friend that always stuck with me. at night when I see the moon, or when I look at the sun directly in its eye, I sometimes still recall it. in this particular poem, it charts the unrequited love of the sun and the moon. oh, how the sun and the moon chase each other around the earth in the cosmos, never to really meet. how different but yet similar the two are, both with their varying lights and gravitational pulls on earth. the musical projects Former Selves and Aloonaluna play out some similar scenario, as sun and moon, piecing together their own star-crossed variants of light and gravity. here on this split we have an intersection of sun and moon; the space where they meet. perhaps its those last few moments before the sun sneaks past the horizon, eyeing that graying moon."
remember, novalis said "we dream of a journey through the universe. but is the universe then not in us? inward goes the secret path." so come on, don't hesitate, be romantic. the truest beauty awaits you.
"beware, this one is a concept album. Hans Dens' style all around, his trademark disturbing lofi-foundsound-loops, but i have a feeling this one is a bit more conceptional as his many other works. in the beginning of each side of this massive tape there is no hope in sight, just darkness and confusion, but hans won't let the listener alone in a fragmented soundscape, instead he takes him by the hand and lead him to some kind of extatic light. once per side, unforgetable and life changing. sounds that orchestrate your traumas and your dreams. the witchdoctor knows you will  need it for your next self healing listening session."
"Creation VI's tape was inspired by ancient greek philosophy and reflects cosmological process, as it was described in the heraclitus work. endlessly continuing creation of the world, soundtrack to the universe, aural architectonics of one, that becomes many. hierarchically organised cosmos, from stardust to every living creature on each planet, from violet void to the singularity. drones huge and mysterious like the cosmos. close your eyes to be lost in its immersity. now."
si pudiera pedir tres deseos, uno sería éste. algo que llevaba esperando muchas semanas... cosmic winnetou (el sello de Günter Schlienz) Former Selves, Aloonaluna, Innercity, Creation VI y algunas fotos coquinetas formando parte de todo ello. tantas cosas que me gustan... unidas ! gracias, Günter, por incluirme en esta hornada tan especial.
el split de Former Selves lo resume así Lynn Fister: "hay un poema de un amigo de la infancia que se me quedó grabado para siempre. por las noches, cuando veo la luna o cuando miro directamente al sol, de vez en cuando todavía lo recuerdo. en dicho poema traza un mapa astral del amor no correspondido del sol y la luna. oh, cómo el sol y la luna se persiguen uno al otro alrededor de la Tierra a través del cosmos, para no encontrarse nunca. tan distintos y parecidos al mismo tiempo, los dos con sus diferentes luces y fuerzas gravitatorias sobre la Tierra. Former Selves y Aloonaluna juegan en un escenario parecido, como el sol y la luna, juntando sus propios tonos de luz y gravedad en un amor predestinado a no encontrarse. en este split tenemos una intersección del sol y la luna, ese espacio preciso en el que se encuentran. tal vez los últimos momentos antes de que el sol desaparezca más allá del horizonte, observando a su luna grisácea."
de todos los mundos, los universos y las dimensiones que caben en Cosmic Winnetou, no podría imaginar uno tan bonito como el sol y la luna de Paul Skomsvold y Lynn Fister, cuya magia ya se había fundido en 'calico sunset'. 'our air' de Former Selves son veinte minutos sin pisar el suelo, el viaje musical más aéreo y conmovedor. hay cambios indescriptibles, no uno ni dos sino muchos, cambios que son como pequeñas canciones dentro de otras, llenos de emoción y notas de piano. sigo imaginando a Paul como un eterno observador de las estrellas, como alguien que se ha pasado mucho tiempo pintando de colores el aire. quizás la plenitud de esta cinta mágica deba buscarse ahí, en al aire, en esa rara capacidad para convertir la emoción en esencia de canción. un concepto, el de la gravedad cero, que impregna toda su música. y esa levedad y esa ligereza no afectan sólo a los títulos: Lynn y Paul construyen canciones que levitan como pompas de jabón y cuya belleza parece que vaya a desvanecerse al soplar. una colección de momentos mágicos capturados entre las nubes, que los proyecta definitivamente a la estratosfera. de entre las muchas posibilidades que ofrecen los sintetizadores al músico intuitivo, Paul se queda con lo mínimo: texturas, ritmos sugeridos, sencillos acordes y silencio. pero siempre siempre, la búsqueda de la emoción. o cómo asociar, una vez más, ambient y canción de cuna. electrónica flotante arropando una melodía maternal cuyo fin siempre será desearnos dulces sueños. tan sólo música ensoñadora para hacer la vida más agradable.
la música de Aloonaluna es demasiado bonita, es como vivir para siempre en Duendelandia. las canciones se explican en sus títulos: visitantes, efímero, el sol de las cuatro de la tarde, aguantando las respiración... y amor a eterno a 'holding breaths', que nos hace sentir como su nombre indica. podría ser la banda sonora de una película de ciencia ficción rodada en los setenta y en un desierto. pienso inevitablemente en 'phase IV' de Saul Bass y en esa imagen de un bebé avanzando hacia la inmensidad del sol. empieza con un evocador, brumoso y sostenido timbre de sintetizador y crece de forma natural a partir de esa sutil telaraña, floreciendo como capas reverberantes, loops y melodías tristísimas que se apilan unas sobre otras, transportándonos en una ola fascinante hacia las alturas. además de la canción más bonita que ha hecho nunca Lynn, es también la que más conecta con Former Selves, de hecho si cierras los ojos cuesta adivinar cuando acaba 'our air' y empieza 'holding breaths'. en 'visitors' Lynn multiplica el eco de su etérea voz, aúna lo más bonito de Motion Sickness of Time Travel y las hadas finlandesas. una poética donde el realismo y los sueños conviven en perfecta armonía.
con Innercity siempre me cuesta imaginar dónde y cómo han nacido esos sonidos. su música comienza y acaba como lo hacen los discos de Tuluum Shimmering. un mantra en el que una vez que el loop inicial empieza a fluir, el enigmático Hans Dens ya no es consciente de lo que hace, perdiendo gradualmente el contacto con el mundo, sin planificar nada, sólo dejándose llevar y sumergiéndonos a nosotros con él. el terreno difuso es el terreno ideal, porque deja las puertas abiertas a la imaginación. en su mundo, donde  todo se mueve al dictado de la anomalía, el caos y el absurdo, las normas son distintas, siempre nos coge desprevenidos. pero aún así, los resultados de esta fantasía astral, caleidoscopio de tormentas y naufragios, está tan por encima de la normalidad... es como entrar en un túnel de tiempo en el que resuenan las voces y los ritmos de tribus desconocidas, como si Hans Dens supiera algo más, algo que sabes que no va a revelar porque seguramente no se puede contar con palabras. pero lo notas al escuchar sus canciones. mejor dicho, escuchando dentro de sus canciones. o viendo sus fotos con esa máscara de alien. o leyendo los títulos de su infinita discografía. todo muy raro, pagano y misterioso. en la cara a un rugido de fondo crece y se lleva la canción como un vendabal. no es un cambio de ritmo, no es algo previsible, pero la transforma por completo sin que te dé tiempo a pestañear. un sonido que se repite, otro que lo dobla, un latido que se multiplica mecánicamente y miles de sonidos burbujeantes no identificados. e infinitos cambios. Hans Dens moldea el sonido. en él transforma los drones, los loops, las notas de un sintetizador y sus resonancias en un alud de sonido abstracto, en una fila de notas que se ordenan y se desordenan. esa tensión entre lo analógico y lo digital está en el centro de una música que parece no tener límites imaginables. hay un poquito de Jake Webster de Tuluum Shimmering, de las sinfonías marcianas de Jani Hirvonen de Uton y las filigranas más contagiosas de Tod Dockstader. así, más o menos, suena Träumata, otro de esos discos que parece que vengan de un planeta desconocido. ambient, kraut, psicodelia... e hipnosis en el laberinto de las sombras de la preciosísima cara b.
Creation VI es Tim Six, es cerrar los ojos y perderse en su inmensidad. es creer todo los que nos dice Tim, es la materia y luego el movimiento que hace que ésta se desplace, un bosque selvático donde lo terrenal se cruza con la leyenda, el drone elevado hasta el infinito, la banda sonora del Universo, la cueva naranja de la portada. entrar en su mundo es perder de vista el tuyo. su maremágnum de drones nos lleva a lugares y época inciertas de filósofos griegos y realidades ambiguas y confusas. tan cerca y tan lejos, es 'plan 9 from outer space' en 535 antes de Cristo. 'eidos' es mi favorita, la más orgánica, un emocionante viaje por planetas que no son el nuestro hecho de retales de historia musical antigua (reciente), mágicamente transformada en arcilla sónica para el placer de Tim Six y nuestro. 'akroamatikos', una de esas cintas que te van ganando poco a poco y que esconde mucho más de lo que parece, deja muchísimos posos: el proceso cosmológico descrito en la obra de Heráclito, las ideas sobre el origen de la identidad del Universo que diluyen el concepto de inmensidad hasta dejarlo irreconocible, el ruido infinito que nos hará libres. cuencos tibetanos, arpa-birimbao, loops de cantos tribales y un aroma ancestral y mágico que lo envuelve todo. gracias al sonido y la superposición de capas casi somos capaces de imaginar un espacio geográfico de una época muy concreta, como si Tim nos mostrase una imagen exacta de cómo sonaría la música de las civilizaciones más antiguas. una cinta con un encanto difícil de superar gracias al aura histórico que la rodea.
