The Free Players are a super-group of featuring members of Finnish free-jazz pawnpins Vapaa, Kheta Hotem, Kundalini Snakes and the venerable Keijo Virtanen. While previous documents of this band exist, this is apparently the more democratic version (no longer is it 'Keijo and the Free Players'), a shift documented by the more accessible sound here.

What we have here is an hour long set of jams that seems more reminiscent of Floyd and the Dead than what we've come to expect from Keijo's previous output. Wild guitar leads and wailing sax (nevermind the space-organ) reveals immediately what cloth this recording has been cut from -- which is to say that The Free Players is a true psychedelic album!" last visible dog

"members of the Free Players appear once again under the banner 'Vapaa'. classic psychedelic improv much again to our Krautrock favorites, though with less structure. great feelings of nostalgia!

Vapaa is a loose collective of musicians but this recording represents the basic "core" group; Joel Kivela, Tiitus Petajaniemi, Keijo Virtanen and Jari-Pekka Koho. We met in Jyvaskyla Finland in year 2003-2004 and after that we have made many records to different labels and played live shows around Finland and one tour in Europe as Keijo and The Free Players. Organic, drifting psychedelic improv without much in the way of modern equivalents. Easily compared to a few Krautrock favorites (early Amon Duul 2 and a very quiet Ash Ra Tempel)-- but in general a bit more relaxed (perhaps a little International Harvester?) For those well versed in the 'LVD sound', this is fairly definitive."

harían falta varios días para explicar todos los motivos por los que este disco me parece tan bonito (Keijo Virtanen...Uton...), así que me conformo con escuchar una y otra y otra vez las flautas de juguete tan queridas por Kuupuu (¿es el viento o los cánticos de los monjes fantasmas?) de 'sarastaa'' y las palmas entrañables y a destiempo de 'tuhannet vuodet'.

...es posible que hum hum hum se convierta en una parte importante de la vida de vapaa la :)

Eastern Fox Squirrels es para mí una de los discos más bonitos que ha hecho nunca Brad Rose. aquí están las entrañas de The North Sea y The Juniper Meadows, volcánicas, fulgurantes, brumosas, apacibles (como Hours, el momento más dulce del disco). lo mismo pero distinto, incorporando saxos y trompetas, prados de guitarras acústicas y flautas exóticas, manteniendo largas conversaciones con los árboles y las mariposas, con ardillas locas y ardillas lúcidas, advirtiéndonos que no vayamos a los bosques de noche. todas las canciones arropan y adormecen, y su enorme poder evocador convierte nuestras cabezas en pantallas llenas de paisajes, ambientes e historias. no sé si mis elogios vienen contaminados por la magia de los mismos músicos del proyecto pero...esto es una maravilla

"Dream Magazine has come to the same conclusion as I: Brad Rose does not sleep. He can't possibly. Here is a man who runs two labels (both highly prolific), an e-zine, blog, podcast, and who knows what else, and still manages to both work and be about half a dozen bands. He seems a one-man jewelled antler (in fact, he's revived their old e-mail group!), especially when it comes to pioneering some truly innovative and beautiful new groups.

Eastern Fox Squirrels is a collaboration between Brad, his wife Eden and Robert Horton. Along the way they are joined by the talents of Tom and Christina Carter (Charalambides), Dan Plonsey (a player in the company of Anthony Braxton and Eugene Chadbourne) and Jason Bill (Charalambides, also recording with Jack Rose.)

Sonically, Eastern Fox Squirrels has a varied pallet. Like the Jewelled Antler folks, we have bouzouki, glockenspiels, bowed banjos, weird exotic flutes and who knows what else being used to great effect. The results being very much like what you'd expect; experimental but with soft, round edges and nice, nearly ambient dirges that feel welcome but really aren't normal." lvd

me vuelve loca el saxo dulce dulce, las campanillas y la guitarra de Turilas Ruusussa, la mántrica y hechizante Kolmiyalkainen Koira, el saxo caliente, la cacharrería y el órgano de juguete de Yarmas Parkki, la asombrosa melodía de Sina Kirkas, el exótico acento finlandés y la flauta pajaril de Lihaa Vai Maata, pero sobre todo esa pequeña opereta delicada y ensoñadora llamada Onnellisten Saari, en la cual he percibido un bonito hurto melódico a Salainen Paikka de Kemialliset Ystavat. sala-arhimo es un lugar plácido, acolchado, acogedor, calentito, planeador, fluctuante. la ataraxia, la calma total.

"Islaja (Fonal) side-man and frequent tour-mate with Larkin Grimm (Secret Eye), Sala-Arhimo's debut oozes a slow psychedelic radiance from a half-frozen world of hibernation. A bit of ancient Pink Floyd as reference point, perhaps some of the jazz-like moments of Faust's more gentle side, but here all comparisons end. This is another one of those 'you need to hear it, but there's no way to get it' Finnish geniuses whose music shares much affinity with the Lal lal lal crowd (Kemialliset Ystavat, Avarus, etc.), but focuses less on the purely experimental, and more on rich, melodic drones and voice."

Smith, Tony Conrad, Flying Saucer Attack, The Dead Texan (Moutere)...Un mundo paralelo y emocionante creado a partir de theremines ululantes, oleadas de loops y fusiones imposibles, atrevidas reformulaciones de esquemas tradicionales, texturas vaporosas y campestres al estilo de Blithe Sons o Thuja y largos desarrollos instrumentales. Tanta intensidad queda resumida en Strumming Rotunda, un sueño rural de pura cepa, incluso bonito, que me tiene hechizada, y que es además la más dinámica y accesible de todo el lote. Ahora mismo, mientras suena Taking on the rails, me parece sin dudarlo la reedición, el disco, la grabación y el acontecimiento del año. Por Psychedelic Underground y sus trece minutos de mantras, guitarras y slides, por Thou shall be wakin y su arrebatadora melodía gitana con violín, voz y percusión, por la preciosa Taking on the rails, porque se oye, entre una maraña de cánticos y mantras, el cri cri de los grillos en The light ahead, the dead fields behind...Free Country suena pletórico, inspirado, inabarcable y muy emocionante.

Cuarenta minutos y diez segundos que empiezan y acaban de forma amable y pausada, mucho más de lo que pudiera parecer al tratarse de un único corte en el que predominan drones, voces misteriosas, campos, guitarras que experimentan toda clase de sonidos narcotizantes, pianos lacónicos y primitivos, cuencos tibetanos....'Hoarse Frenzy' es un disco caótico y centrífugo, armónico y balsámico, construido a base de cadencias rítmicas y divagaciones atmosféricas que alcanzan su momento más emocionante una vez pasado el ecuador, cuando la slide y la acústica se entralazan para construir la melodía definitiva en el minuto veinticinco. Ambientes muy cercanos a todo el material de Jewelled Antler y en especial a The Blithe Sons.
