tree of life

Seven years ago started 'Calm in Trees' as the result of the joy of discovering amazing music that was not easy to listen to. In the beginning, the posts started providing information about the project, the record and the label. A lot of music lovers were very thankful with Ana because she made us discover  marvelous and interesting underground sounds even when most of the time was so difficult to reach that kind of music; not just because there were not mp3 all over the place as they are now, but also because some of those were limited editions.

Along those 7 years a lot of changes occurred. Thanks to the spread of the mp3 format and storage pages, we were able to listen consciously a record and then buying it  if our pockets allowed it. Here was shared music from all over the world sometimes from far away countries like Finland or so. Also, more persons started to contribute with this blog always with the same spirit, that is to share and promote music that we love and respect, 'download to know, purchase to support'. Besides music, we also were sharing different images by different artists or photographers from all over the world for to promote their work.

We want to let you all know which is the intention of this blog in a clear manner. We don't want to affect any artist, project or label. If in past because misunderstandings or a lack of a communication we have affected or shared music that was not intended to be shared, we publicly apologize  as we didn't mean to do so. The last years everyday we receive a lot of mails from artists or labels sending us their music for us to do a post to promote their music. We also publicly thank to all them for sharing -in a lot of cases even the lp, tape, cd or so- and we thank them because the blog was about that, to promote and share (as we have said so many times) and a lot of times were the artists themselves who were feeding the spirit around here.

Because what really matters is the music, besides the readers and artists that time to time give a look to this blog, we want to keep going with the blog. But we want to ask very clearly that in case you are a musician or a owner of a label and you don't want us to promote or to share a link, please let us know directly and we are willing to delete the post and link. Fortunately, internet is also changing and there are also options for artists that want to be promoted or listen to without sharing the files, as it has happened here tons of times that we just share for example the 'listen' link.

We are open, we want to learn and we want to be able to keep expressing our thoughts and ideas, but most important, we want to keep discovering music.

"i wrote these songs in 2009 at home, to honor the animals exploited to serve as clothing, food, entertainment or used for vivisection. and for pets that died during the recording. now i can tell, are immortals. animals are friends, not food, not things. they're voiceless, you're his voice. please consider yourself go vegan."

es difícil expresar todo lo que es y representa "animals are not things!". me puede por razones evidentes. junto a greta, creo que es mi disco favorito de árbore. pero claro, hay cantos de los pajarindos de peiti, silbidos, ladridos, maullidos y ronroneos de tini mandarini, sapri y fonian fon, la naturaleza y el mundo animalesco revoloteando en las catorce canciones, como para no serlo. además mónica vacas, la voz femenina más bonita, canta en pachocas (‘me acurruqué en tus brazos…ea…’) y petula. hay versiones entrañables de silver jews y smog (rafa no acaba de creerse que su voz es preciosa, pero madre mía… ). melodías de cuento, y una canción de carne de gallina, oklahoma soul, little kirby blues. y la fotola de la portada que lo resume todo. 

y sipes, ése es el espíritu. disco de la vida para siempre jamás.

ah, y nuestro arbolindo estrena bandcamp con todas sus grabaciones y canciones sueltas que ha ido grabando a lo largo de los años. no hay mejor manera de celebrar un cumpleaños

me pasa siempre, cuando tengo tantas cosas y sensaciones que decir de personas muy especiales y cercanas no sé cómo hilvanarlas. y más aún cuando los protagonistas explican tan bien y bonito cómo surgió moon jam, olelbes y take action, fight for animal rights. Rafa (también conocido como árbore o arbolindo, el genuino field recordist y sweet Oklahoma soul, con o sin apenino, con o sin mónica vacas: 'pachocas' y 'petula'!), una caracola llamada La Mar ('Juniper' de caracoles era tan extremadamente bonita y mágica que podría estar en cualquier recopilatorio al lado de todos esos grupos que nos hacen flotar tocando psych folk tribal drone y ser nuestra favorinda entre favorindas) y Nico aka el Nejo (‘if you don’t mind i’m going home' de equinox, the peacekeeper es una de mis canciones favoritas de este año y de todos los años). tres amigos unidos en la distancia por una noche de luna llena y una forma romántica y maravillosa de entender la música...sé que todo lo que pueda decir de este encuentro de grillos, pajarindos, flautas, ladridos lejanos de perros que parecen lobos, sonidos inclasificables que dan ganas de llorar, mensajes, creencias, méxico, mojave y peitieiros, microphones y luzzzalig...se queda muy corto, pero si lo de 'discos espaciales y especiales' tiene sentido es por reuniones como ésta.

“durante el año 2009 formé parte de una investigación encubierta en granjas de visones. saltamos los muros de la mayoría de granjas de visones de España con la intención de retratar el horror que sufren los visones hacinados en jaulas hasta que son asfixiados con dióxido de carbón en un cajón cerrado para ser posteriormente despellejados y poder así vender su piel al cruel mundo de la peletería. cuando terminó la investigación le prometí a los visones, que vi crecer hasta morir, que les dedicaría una canción para que su muerte no fuese en vano. así, en mayo de 2009 grabé “take action, fight for animal rights!” un homenaje a esos visones y a todos los animales que son explotados para servir de vestimenta, de comida, de entretenimiento o los utilizados en vivisección. los animales, como tú y como yo, quieren vivir. ¡ayúdalos!

en julio de 2010 mar & nico (smokey feather) cruzaron el charco para venir a mi casa a pasar unos días. les comenté que podían grabar una canción y publicar un split conjunto incluyendo “take action, fight for animal rights!”. la idea les gustó pero no tomó forma hasta este año, concretamente hasta la luna llena de abril. a ellos (smokey feather) les parecía muy significativo grabar una canción la noche de luna llena al mismo tiempo en diferentes continentes. de ahí surgió mi aportación “moon jam”, el epílogo a una colaboración astral entre hermanos.” rafa

"a veces hay que contar historias... tuvo que pasar un considerable lapso de tiempo para que 'smokey feather' viese la luz. para ello se tuvieron que cruzar charcos atlánticos, visitar playas del mediterráneo o quebrarse un hueso para zambullirse en el ser y estar. también tuvieron que suceder diversos reencuentros bajo cielos de tierras sagradas del desierto; andar cerros quemados, ir a selvas mayas, ver los atardeceres desde la roca en lo alto para volver a montarse en la nube lejana y pisar así, patrias donde el cielo se moja continuamente. el túnel del viaje, que en una de sus muchas salidas hizo escala en tierras gallegas. entre paisajes de ensueño tuvimos la fortuna de compartir con rafa (arbore) la calidez de su hogar, sitio/ situación donde la comenzón por creer y crear incremento el rascar.

sin embargo, con el meneo del tiempo la música seguía pendiente. afortunadamente se nos atravesó ca-li-for-nia. siguiendo la vena de ancestros yaquis del norte de méxico, hubo que cruzar una tormenta de nieve entre árboles gigantes de la sierra nevada para después sucumbir ante las dunas de la reserva mojave. ahí, en ese desierto tan vasto se vibra fuerza a la vez que el exterminio de sus tribus, entre ellas la 'wintu' quienes nombran al creador del mundo como 'olelbes' (he who is above). gracialas a las tierras que alguna vez pertenecieron a los indios del norte de américa, aunado a conexiones lunares es que la ofrenda del 'viaje' finalmente se ofreció. 'olelbes' es el resultado de todas esas conexiones posibles que logra que los hermanos se encuentren en una coordenada infinita atemporal... una historia que tiene de raíz el amor por la música, no puede más que florecer en sonidos. la prueba está aquí." la mar

delphic vapours ~  get off their knees (critical heights 2011)

"Owen Tromans and Seb Hunter have been spinning their web of improvised intrigue as Delphic Vapours for several years now. The duo meld their guitars into a miasma of drone and melody where the six strings are just as likely to spew forth ancient synth gurgle or catastrophic waves of fuzz as divinely clipped arpeggios.

"Singing, Ringing Tree" envelops the listener in a liquid atmosphere heavy with foreboding, as cyclopean tusks of noise leer up through the foggy drone. When melody enters it is forlorn and broken. A sailor's song from some unknown depth.

"Pythian Cleft" is a different beast entirely. Recorded at a live show in Winchester, it builds through a desert wasteland of clean, echoed guitars to a heat haze of hum and rumble. Finally the piece levitates from the sands like some forgotten starcraft as boosted tremolos kick forth toward the stratosphere.

"Another Sunset" is so long we couldn't get it on the cd. So you, dear listeners, get a download bonus. A defiantly lo-fi exercise in tone manipulation; we'll leave you to imagine Les Rallizes and Cluster in a lift shaft." critical heights

hay muchos discos por descubrir en critical heights (y muchas fotolas de árbore y mar para escoger sólo una), pero hoy es el día perfecto para disfrutar de los sonidos ultra-etéreos e improvisados del dúo de Hampshire Delphic Vapours (Owen Tromans- que hace poco ha publicado un split con Wooden Wand versionándose mutuamente- y Seb Hunter, músico y escritor). gracias Owen, mr "Steely acoustic guitar with lashings of romantic sentiment".
