alessandro stefana

"Poste E Telegrafi is the debut solo album from Italian guitarist Allesandro Stefana. Featuring an allstar cast including Marc Ribot & Leo Abrahams, Stefana creates a dreamy world of instrumental perfection and beauty. Inspired by the work of Ennio Morricone, Ry Cooder, Simon Jeffes, Steve Reich and Brian Eno, he has created a thoroughly modern Western world within his compositions and arrangements. With constant references to traditional music and rural blues he utilizes electric and acoustic instrumentation with tremendously compelling results. Acoustic, electric, and pedal steel guitars along with banjo, kalimba, baliphones and found objects were all carefully combined with some primitive electronic instruments such as an arpeggiator, omnichord and home made vinyl loops. His sound is entirely original yet clearly rooted in traditions such as Film Music, Blues, Experimental, Ambient and Avante Garde musics. Stefana manages his cast of collaborators very well. Most tracks on Poste E Telegrafi are duets with these musicians keeping the sound and arrangement simple and pure. Instruments breathe and pulse with life and excitement in this highly original album." important

holly golightly & the brokeoffs

"Oh Holly, you get us every time! With her timeless voice and snarly attitude, Golightly is one of the fiercest singers and songwriters of our time! With her new band The Brokeoffs we get to hear her take a break from her usual garage juke joint gems and explore the moonshine drenched world of Appalachia. From sparse country ballads to haunting blues, this record shows that no matter what musical direction Golightly takes on, the results are always fantastic. Musically, it's almost like a stripped down version of those haunting Tom Waits soundscapes, with an ever so wonderfully warped country twang and then of course the icing on the cake is Golightly's spot on vocals and delivery which make the songs so immediate and engaging. So nice!" aquarius
"The Brokeoffs are Holly Golightly and Lawyer Dave. They have been mapping this record out for years. And now, at last, good luck has landed them in the same place, at the same time, for just long enough to make their debut album. 'You Can't Buy A Gun When You're Crying' was lovingly recorded at Ramshackle Studios during New Year celebrations in 2007. It is a winding, dirt track of a record. It's pitted with potholes, but they're walking it with ease. They're enjoying stumbling along, tipping grit from their boots and soaking their sore feet in the creek. The Lawyer and Holly proudly present their first joint offering and invite y'all to join them on their travels awhile." damaged goods
“A ver, ¿de qué has decidido deshacerte?”

cloaks

"First ever non-Starving Weirdos release on their own Atheists Are Gods label comes from Spencer Doran aka Cloaks who present two long minimal pieces that recall the evocative repeat-cosmologies of Terry Riley and Steve Reich with aspects of Go Hirano, Jewelled Antler Collective and early Richard Youngs nose-diving into beautiful vapour trails scored for piano, tape, zither and bells and electric guitar, piano, harmonium and electronics." volcanic tongue
"The first release comes from Cloaks, aka Spencer Doran, who for his first readily available domestic full length release, offers up two gorgeous lengthy pieces, one for piano, tapes, zither and bells, the other for electric guitar and piano with harmonium and electronics. The result is lush and spellbinding. The closest comparison that even begins to come close is Lubomyr Melnyk, with his dense flurries of notes, creating dizzyingly intricate swirls of melodic fragments that while ultra complex are so intricate they seem to melt into long dreamlike drifts.
The opening track begins with a strange jumble of chaotic percussion, weird boings, effects drenched squiggles, sounding like something that could be a bit goofy for our liking, but after a burst of record crackle and needle on vinyl static, the track settles into a gorgeously sun baked, glistening shimmer, a fine mist of notes enveloping the listener like a warm fog, multiple abstract melodies drifting into one another becoming gloriously intertwined, hovering ghostlike over soft drifts of smeared piano in the background. It almost sounds like Oval's Diskont, but with soft shimmery piano instead of skipping cds. Fluid and organic, softly swelling, so many notes... you know how you can sort of blur your eyes and make everything look all fuzzy, well imagine you could blur your EARS, it's like listening to Reich or Riley or Palestine with blurred ears. Soft focus and indistinct, every once in a while bits of melody coming into view but quickly fading into the sounds around it. So pretty. One of those rare tracks that we wish went on forever and ever...
The second track is a subtly different beast but with a similar vibe. Beginning with spare spidery electric guitar, suspended in a wide open expanse of near silence, a sort of skeletal post rock, which quickly slips under a gradually building wave of dense Wave-Lox like piano. Thick roiling low end squalls of reverberating rumble and rich overtones, very lush and intense. Near the final few minutes little bits of electronic glitch and grrr begin to surface, slowly wrapping themselves around the piano flurries, eventually surrounding it completely, becoming a dense buzzing electronic drone with almost no trace of the piano remaining...
Packaged in super striking silkscreened digipaks with pasted on textured paper, full color art, and with a hand screened insert." aquarius

islaja

"Islaja's third album is a journey deeper into the world that for us is a dream and a fairytale, but to her a reality. Islaja as a concept has turned into a star that is expected to shine with brilliance. But she is something else. The songs tell us about the decay of our age, its demise and immorality, its plunge into heartless consumer culture. Islaja herself does not burn in that same fire. Her fire is an inner fire. Behind her eyes and in her heart you can see and hear her true charisma. True dedication and utter disrespect for the artificial authority made by men. Yet she is not the self-destructive Nico or the eccentric Björk. But a good woman. A tough one. Her eyes can burn a hole in you. Her songs are poems and stabbing knives. -- Sami Sänpäkkilä." "Islaja is Merja Kokkonen, a young visual artist and musician living and working in Helsinki, Finland. Islaja records her music at home using a rainbow of instruments to accompany her personal vocal delivery sung in Finnish. She has performed with Avarus, Kemialliset Ystävät and is also a member of Hertta Lussu Ässä, a free-folk super trio with Lau Nau and Kuupuu."

davenport family - at the foot of zodiac mountain (meudiademorte, cassette 2007)

"one sided 35minutes long jam. their very last jam withmask of the davenport clan on their faces, free-form improvisational folk performed on walpurgis, clay rubys brithday by clay ruby, t endless, woodman, johnny d, billy lee, nico kain, aaron laurant, tyler olson.limited to 230 copies." meudiademorte

"Ultra limited release from the Davenport Family, the extended lineup of free folkers Davenport, released on the Meudiademorte label. This is a single 35 minute jam, and it is a monster, sure there's the usual, clattery percussion, distant folky jangle, shimmery ambience, but shit here gets way more fierce and scary. Some massive slow motion stripped down folk doom. Epic sludgy rhythms, a plodding crashing thud, demarcating a harsh landscape of wild tribal drumming, strange echoe-y vocals, streaks of guitar feedback, like some krautrock free folk doom metal Taj Mahal Travellers or something. Everything blown out and abstract, hung loosely around a relentless rhythmic death march, trawling through dense clouds of damaged fx, dubbed out drums, clattery percussion and huge bassy throbs. Tribal and primitive, spacey and majestic, pounding and surprisingly brutal for a bunch of hippy free folk misfits. Awesome!!" aquarius

siren, pocahaunted (& robedoor)

"Buried Valley offers us yet another glimpse into the solo expression of one of the many talented minds behind the booming psych scene popping up in Los Angeles. Under the Siren pseudonym, Bethany of Pocahaunted takes a step back from the duo spirit jams to ride upon a beam of melancholy that is spiraling slowly into silence. “Living Light” relies on a simple palette consisting of Bethany’s lovely voice, a guitar, and plenty of reverb for twenty glorious minutes. Both tracks are like a looped descent into the spirit world tapped by Pocahaunted but approached with much more trepidation and a lot less volume. The A-side, “Feathered Crown”, is a ten-minute beauty to behold, opening with a strong, melodic refrain which emerges a few times throughout the track, then digs in deep, her voice always a lingering presence, ghostly, boring a discreet hole into my psyche through which small feedback lines whistle like wind. My one complaint would be the lack of dynamics in the songwriting. Both compositions are similarly split between a lower movement and a vigorous refrain, often separated by obvious volume shifts. The b-side “Spiral Spell” has a more halting approach to the compositional form, but it works in a similar fashion as the a-side. The arrangements and instrumentation may not be the most engaging, but it seems that these play out like extra layers which serve more to accentuate and frame Bethany’s pristine singing performance. Wordless, absorbing, and exact, her vocals in Pocahaunted were always a large part of the draw, but here, they are fully revealed making this project an enticing avenue for further development of her unique approach to affective chant. Amongst the rising tide of vocally-based experimental music becoming more prevalent by the day, the Siren project definitely keeps a disembodied head above the tribe." foxy digitalis

"One last tape to mention before I move onto more accessible shit. Not Not Fun has become one of my absolute favorite labels as of late. They've put out tons of killer stuff in 2006 and this recent tape from Pocahaunted called Moccasinging. This is some magnificent tribal exclamation. This duo of Bethany and Amanda (who co-runs Not Not Fun with Britt from the also fantastic Robedoor) know how to turn a simple freakout jam into something spectacular. Cryptic drums and layer-upon-layer of treated voices fly through the air like ghosts scared of their own fucking shadows. Bits and pieces of keyboard and guitar make their way into the mix, but it's the vocals that really set this shit apart. I love this tape and am dying to hear more from these two. Typically excellent packaging, too." brad rose

"Not Not Fun's newest ancestral spirit team is Pocahaunted, and this sunset-kissed C38 is their first foray outside the inner psychic teepee/sanctum of private dreamsong. So dance round the fire, the war for the plains is ON (yr tape deck). A spectral feather headdress of bone cloud chanting, turquoise noise, ocarina whispers, and trail-of-tears tom-tom tribalism, Moccasinging weaves together a ragged patchwork equal parts mother/earth lamentation, battle prayer, and primitive creation myth. Four tomahawk hymns of buffalo skull sisterhood. Hand-painted tapes in tie-dyed canvas pouches adorned with golden beads and eagle feathers, plus an insert. Limited to 100. Member of Quintana Roo"

"New limited collaborative set from the Robedoor duo paired with west coast all-femme vocal hypnotists Pocahaunted. A little more melodic than earlier Robedoor entries, repeat guitar picking glides over bone-rotting fuzz and coronas of vocal."
"This is an unusually mellow outing for Robedoor, the usual doom riddled atmospheres replaced with subtle stains or taints, a slowly transmutive drone to which Pocahaunted supply vocal tracings and layered guitar loops. Guessing Robedoor are responsible for the general uneasiness that’s threaded through this single track, a bent mirror undercurrent, similar to that psychic nagging you used to get just before a cassette wobbled off into disrepair, slight distorted shapes, cymbal smears, rifts in the lullaby quality. Lovely Native American drums supply a gentle impetus, a heartbeat definition through which the vocals fall, float apparitionally chasing their own tails wailing, whelping, wraithlike shapes that fade slowly out. A beautiful sound that doesn’t over stretch itself during the disc’s 27 minutes and demonstrates an interesting division for Robedoor while furthering Pocahaunted’s ability to invoke the ghosts of the Sioux , Pawnee, Arapaho." rottenmeats

tight meat duo

"Tight Meat, a duo of the fantastic free drummer Alex Neilson and the fiery sax of David Keenan. A powerful onslaught of free jazz with David providing some high energy saxophone screams alongside Alex' plethora of rhythmic energy. "Like all the great visionary thinkers of our time, from Iggy Stooge to Arthur Doyle, David Keenan and Alex Neilson are autodidactic polymaths devolving advanced thought back to punk-primitive motion. Judging by the music heard on /Vanishing Fist/, their first salvo under the name Tight Meat Duo, these twentysomething/thirtysomething Glaswegian deviants are prime examples of the dictum that the new wave of free musicians act on impulse. They've studied and immersed themselves in some of the most life affirming vibrations of all time, those silhouettes, shadows and forecasts of tomorrow disguised as free jazz, as Sun Ra almost put it; sensed this essence flooding their synapses, rewiring their DNA, messing with the id so inherited 3D vision becomes implanted Third Eye cosmology; and now they're getting in on the aktion." Tony Herrington

asa irons & swann miller

"...2005 was Feathers year, hands down. Asa Irons solo album is an exercise in simplicity. Nine tracks with no names packaged in a jewel case with minimal cover art and no real information on the release, this album is magnificent. These songs are beautiful, heart-breaking, and enchanting. Everything you could want from a guy, a girl, and a guitar is offered up on this release. It is nearly perfect and just as good as the Feathers LP. Thank god this is being reissued in vinyl. mv & ee

grails

"Following soon after the critically praised Black Tar Prophecies collection on Important Records, Portland, Oregon's Grails return with their first proper studio album since the 2004 release of Redlight. Burning Off Impurities, their debut for Temporary Residence out on May 1, 2007, makes good on the promise of those past releases in delivering an album that not only thrusts the group to new heights, but also pushes the instrumental rock genre forward for the first time in nearly a decade.
An increased interest in psychedelic, ambient and world music is most likely to blame for Grails' exploration of the lesser-traveled paths of modern music. In addition, their eclectic range of collaborative endeavors, guitarist Zak Riles is also in M. Ward's band, while drummer Emil Amos has moonlighted as Jandek's drummer - has introduced an element of improvisation and reinterpretation of ideas that is both brilliant and earnest.
Like Black Tar Prophecies, Burning Off Impurities was produced by Grails, with production assistance by Jeff Saltzman and Steven Wray Lobdell (of avant-garde legends, Faust). Influenced in equal parts by Ash Ra Tempel, Erkin Koray, Popol Vuh, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and dozens others, this is very likely the closest Grails will ever get to making a classic rock record; the kind of sprawling masterpiece that you savor for years before passing it on to your younger brother so he can repeat the process." brainwashed

cold bleak heat

cold bleak heat - simitu (family vineyard, 2007)
Cold Bleak Heat is the dream-team, east-coast avant jazz line-up of alto/tenor saxophonist Paul Flaherty (Dream/Aktion Unit), drummer Chris Corsano (Sunburned Hand of the Man, Vampire Belt), trumpeter Greg Kelley (nmperign, Heathen Shame), and acoustic bassist Matt Heyner (No Neck Blues Band, Test, Eye Contact).
While explosive as their 2005 debut, Simitu brings a melancholic, even sensitive feel to these improvisations. Yet, no need to worry about these four wipin' tears on their sleeves. CBH wages between the melodic centers/ghostly solos of Flaherty/Kelley and loose, downhill, free blow outs you'd expect, all while mainting the grand swell of a hardcore jazz symphony. Even as complex and multi-paced beats sink into bowed-drones and vocal hollers, focused lyricism remains the returning leader. Features liner notes and drawings by Christina Carter (Charalambides).

the solo joint

"..This is a collection of home-recorded improvisations on guitar, often with open tunings and mostly very loose ends, never looking for structures, but only building up on the mood of the fingerpickings which almost the guitar-with-the-performer (in this order) create. Sometimes, like The Golden Crescent, these sound like campfire improvisations without the hearth and fire, focusing into the empty space, but more often are almost too private, meditative sessions which spins and spins around. This is completely a mood thing, at times, comparable to the most esoteric moments of Satwa. Even when the guitars are melodic, the chords are so loosly directing, the effect of turning around and spinning creating something psychedelic. Two tracks are live improvisations as a quartet, with some percussion, vocal mournings and sound loops. Me Voy Bueno might be my favourite track: a melodic picking open blues tune-or-whatever spin with a perfectly fitting almost meccano-like guitar case rhythm, with some changing and almost losing-it-into cloud-staring rhythmic pulses near the end, but still just unconsciously directed enough to make its own sense of being almost deliberate. No track is really too long or ever boring, and the mix of all improvisations is compiled well. For me it is a very enjoyable cd but I think it will mostly be attractive especially to those who are able to accept the essence of just moody and loose psychedelic acoustic guitar spinning wheels." Psych Van Het Folk

glenn jones

"Since 1989, Glenn Jones has led Boston’s “avant -garage” instrumental rock band, Cul de Sac, whose musical adventures are documented on nine albums to date, including a soundtrack for cult-director Roger Corman, and collaborations with guitarist John Fahey and former Can vocalist Damo Suzuki. A 30-plus-year devotee of the so-called “Takoma school,” Jones has written extensively on the steel-string guitar’s leading lights: John Fahey, with whom he was friends for nearly 25 years, and Robbie Basho, who befriended Jones during the five years before his untimely death in 1986. With former Takoma label guitarists Peter Lang and Michael Gulezian -- along with Loren Mazzacane Connors, Henry Kaiser, Gary Lucas, Tony Conrad and others -- Jones performed at sold-out concerts honoring John Fahey, in NYC and San Francisco, shortly after Fahey’s death in 2001. In 2004, Jones stepped out of the long shadow cast by Takoma’s guitar visionaries and offered his own "new possibility", This Is the Wind That Blows It Out, for Strange Attractors Audio House. Its release was followed by a month-long tour of Europe with guitarist Jack Rose. Jones has since shared bills with Steffen Basho-Junghans, Max Ochs, Matt Valentine/Erika Elder; along with Rose, he’s toured with Peter Lang, and with some of the best of the new breed of solo guitar upstarts: Harris Newman, Sean Smith, and James Blackshaw, among others."
