the bummer road

"Gorgeous-looking tour-only COM from the Bummer Road trio line-up (mv & ee and Moses Jiggs with occasional input from Sparrow Wildchild on flute). Atmosphere is somewhere between an unknown Sea Ensemble jam with Sonny Sharrock and Byard Lancaster and a Go Hirano disc featuring Jutok Kaneko and Sandy Bull covering devotional German jugband with nothing but a blat of electricity, a set hard-twonking strings, hand-smelted metal percussion and a pair of lungs full of thick purple smoke. One of the group's furthest circumnavigations of known blues form to date, this comes in a hand painted/lettered hard card gatefold sleeve complete with booklet of prose pomes and art snap." Volcanic Tongue

"This 15 minutes song is the key-work follow up to their acclaimed debut album on Time-Lag Records. Here Roberto and Maurizio Opalio, aka My Cat Is An Alien, act in the darkness of the outer space, while Ramona Ponzini lights up the autumnal air with her enchanting voice, along with her Japanese percussions and wind chimes; by reitering one only Japanese word (whose meaning is 'Ocean'), she creates a universe of pure magic. Radical minimalism, folk, psychedelia are the main terms that rule this mysterious chant and intimate prayer; but what you'll find here is extremely far from any unuseful relation with what you already know, representing 'Oounabara' a totally still unknown dimension of what the music of today should be: a window on Tomorrow."Whether electric or acoustic, the music here is deliciously paced and almost fragile, as if the whole thing were made of glass. The sounds are both somber and delirious as they gradually unwind. The sounds are made of acoustic guitar, tape loops, mystical percussion and of course, Ponzini's voice. I can just imagine these sounds wafting down off the Western Alps in Italy, where this music was recorded. Surreal fantasies begin to form as I think about it. This album deserves a full-length review's worth of appreciation for its otherworldly beauty but I am humbled by the record and can find no more words to do it justice" Adam Richards, Indieworkshop

1-sided 12" lathe cut + DVD-R (Opax Records)(special lathe cut vinyl edition by Peter King in New Zealand; private press edition of 50 copies, with original Ramona's copper-gold ink drawing on the flipside of the vinyl; also included a Roberto Opalio's silent short film on DVD-r inspired by music + art, playable together or separately; handnumbered)

the north sea

"brad rose's body of work is steadily growing to epic proportions , his collaborations span the globe both geographically and artistically...but it is in his solo work , and in his work with his wife , eden , that his true talent shines . here is a perfect example of that. meditative and gently psychedelic folk wanderings , deeply personal yet immersive and warm"

my cat is an alien / corsican paintbrush

"Turin and Tulsa collide in this match made for the cosmos from the silver dust that permeates the atmosphere. Both these duos have been kissed in the third eye by the astral goddess, and the sonic ruins left behind leave nothing to chance. Minimal, cathartic excursions through starfields and galaxy farms are etched in stone on each side of this acetate beauty. My Cat Is An Alien contribute a piece recorded live on the radio. It is another side to their ever-evolving musical persona. the Opalios know how to get so much out of so little, and this piece is no different. Corsican Paintbrush, the husband-wife duo of Brad Rose & Eden Hemming, pour two wounded birds out of their hat. It's a feline-themed love affair, for sure. There's magic in these walls, and each duo does its part to crack the code. With copper-on-black silkscreened covers and limited to only 50 copies, it's time to get yourself a piece of space debris."

voice of the seven woods

voice of the seven woods - the firefly dusk/winter's temper (twisted nerve, 7 inch vinyl 2006)

larkin grimm

"Larkin Grimm left her bedroom fantasies and took a next step into the world, rambling and with inspiration open, and with socialized musical interaction, from nature calls to haunting memories (personal experiences with relationships, or Appalachian ideas of traditions), as well as fantasies and hidden experiences, or direct interactions. Sometimes she becomes the voice of the woods, the shamanic survivor with her own freedom, than she becomes the traveller in quest, thinking of things that are lost, lonely heading forward, but meeting new surprises. There’s interesting guitar structured improvised playing, but also loose found sounds, and moody colouring. Each song is recorded on another location and mostly with different people. The most brilliant contribution is the 7 year old Sadie Underhill singing in a strange vibrato and with incredibly well done open timing -she also wrote the lyrics-. Larkin showed with this new release a richer world than before, which sipped real diary-like poetry into its musical context." Psychedelic Folk
Larkin sings and plays guitar, dulcimer, bells, chimes, wall, floor, bass, flute, pennywhistle, whistling, drum; John Grimm : fiddle, mandolin; Annelise Grimm : cowbell; Tom Van Busrick : drums; George Langford : guitar; Jacques Russell : barking; Teppei Ozawa : voice, guitar; Haley O'Connor : hammond organ; Sophia Dixon : drums; Kelly Cook : flute, drums; Lara Polangco : voice, banjo, tabla, tambourine, autoharp, cello, zither, chair, slaps, orgasm; Mother Nature : rainstorm, Sadie Underhill (age 7!): voice, lyrics; Haley & Kelly : pennywhistle

I can't get no) satisfaction".

the zoo wheel

"The Zoo Wheel is Liz Payne's first solo project. Liz plays bass in the acoustic minimalist band Town and Country (Thrilljockey). She is also part of the the quartet Pillow (Bottrop Boy) and has played with many Chicago improvisers, among them Ken Vandermark and Adam Vida. The structure is minimalist, but she builds hybrid acoustic timbres (from field recordings and musical instruments) into complex pattern clusters that recall but do not imitate past traditions."

chamellows

chamellows - rat hearts (fonal, 2006)

"Chamellows (aka Sleeping Bags) is a project of Laura Naukkarinen (Lau Nau) and the visual artist Mikko Kuorinki. These songs have been recorded some as far back as ten years ago. Some previously released on 50-150 limited edition 7" and cassettes. A rather surprising revelation was to find out how fresh and new they sound today. Almost like a bit demented Moldy Peaches album or The Shaggs at their best. However they are more experimental and they weave amazing melodies and rhythms into songs that will keep playing in your head as much as the top 10 record of the week. But these thank god offer a bit more of a puzzle for your ears!" - Fonal.

gareth dickson

"These tracks were recorded at home over a fairly long period of time (2002-2005). Some of them were released previously on an album called 'Spruce Goose', others are tracks towards a forthcoming album entitled 'The Dance' and the rest towards an EP to be called 'Amber Sky'.There are no overdubs on any of the tracks and the effects are usually recorded with the track. I use a steel string guitar and Electro Harmonix delay and reverb pedals. The aim being, really, to draw on a lot of the electronic music I love and still get to play a guitar." Gareth Dickson

(the air is thick with trees/i am fit to leave/tv, how do you bear and be...technology/death is a breeze, death is abreeze...technology)

kathleen baird

john henry calvinist

"David MacKinnon is best known for his work with Brisbane genre-benders the Lost Domain but he has over the years also released a few solo albums under the name of John Henry Calvinist. King Solomon Hill is his latest outing and maybe the least accessible yet, but also probably the one I like the most. What happens here is that we get a twisted, mostly instrumental version of back porch folk/blues from a guy who knows more about the genre than the rest of us do together. But don’t be fooled to believe that we just get an updated version of what once was; no this is so much more than that. The sum of the dusted past is clearly here but it’s placed in someone’s hands that treat history with such a respect that it’s mostly in terms of mood and atmosphere that the two fit together. This is raw and gorgeous, feedback-laced avant blues that feels like a future outsider classic." Broken Face

alela diane

alela diane - the pirate's gospel (holocene, 2006)
"Alela Diane Menig es mi nombre. I make songs, mostly using the guitar, and I sing them.I used to live in the crazy-land. Nevada City, California. It is real nice there. Lots of trees. A River. The family spirit. Beautiful creaters of craft and music. You see, I just left the cabin with crystals in the grout between the logs to move to this new place of city forest wandering: Portland, Oregon. I've got the sweetest kitty named Bramble Rose, who keeps me company during the days here. In the passing of the time, I wind the songs round the strings... sing! sing! sing! I crit around.. sew curtains... get domestic. All the while...I've these fascinations creeping up on me of things long gone. I stop in my slippers to hold a rock I found on a beach of fog, or scatter the contents of my button jar onto the floor to explore the history of my collection. Who lost all these buttons? I'll sit for a while pawing an old grandma's handkerchief or the scrimshaw of a sailor. I think about whose hands did make these things! When outside.... feathers and fall leaves go in my hair or are tucked quietly into a pocket. What wind did blow them! Tatted lace? Bones? Children of Children of Children?
After making 650 copies by hand: sewing lace and paper bags for the case, drawing golden ships, lettering ink, and burning each cd, Holocene Music offered to release "The Pirate's Gospel" nationally. I wish that my hands were strong enough to make everything on my own, but it was no longer possible to make as many cds as I needed. I will continue to make things..." Alela Diane

"Sandy Bull was a label mate of John Fahey's during his time at Vanguard and his contribution to contemporary guitar modes was as crucial as Fahey's, even while Fahey remained inexplicably dismissive, not to say borderline hostile, at the very mention of his name. Early on, Bull flashed on a syncretic combination of American blues form, free jazz based improvisation, Indian raga forms and applied electricity. The result was an Ur-drone music that amplified the static black space at the heart of the deepest blues while making unlikely connections to the phantom architectures of Bach and early music composers like William Byrd albeit transmuting it via higher-minded techniques drawn from Indian devotional music and amplified rock ritual. Still Valentine's Day is the first ever live album from Bull, documenting two massively potent solo shows from San Francisco's Matrix in 1969, one of them on the same bill as Fahey, with Fahey's portion of the show already documented on Water's previous Great Santa Barbara Oil Slick CD. The first set sees Bull on electric guitar, the second on Oud and both sets are thick with the same kind of heady magic and effortlessly psychedelic minimalism that Dylan so convincingly conjured from the air in his 1966 acoustic performances. Indeed, the opening version of Bach's "Bouree" is one of the most supremely LSD-damaged elegies to ever come from his hands, with whole webs of lucid baroque majesty strung like slow-spinning stars held in form-blurring gravities. And the way he skirts the melody on Chuck Berry's "Memphis TN" is uniquely inventive. He remains one of the most significant secret influences on modern underground thought. The whole deal comes beautifully packaged in a card slipcase with a booklet that includes snaps and extensive liners by Byron Coley.."
"Wow! Rare live document from one of the most enigmatic and legendary figures in the solo guitar scene. Recorded over two shows in 1969 at San Francisco's Matrix on the same bill as John Fahey (The Great Santa Barbara Oil Slick documents Fahey's performance on this night) and accompanied by free jazz percussionist, Billy Higgins. Using tape machines, oud, slide guitar and a new electric guitar and amp (apparently some of his equipment was stolen, so you can hear him fiddling with the new equipment, tweaking the settings), the pieces here are taken mostly from his 1968 album E Pluribus Unum, an electric departure from his earlier acoustic classical excursions, that was much derided by purists, but stands as one of Bull's most amazing recordings. Soaked in tremelo and reverb, the raga-ish blues he evokes here display a raw evocative power not captured on any of his studio recordings. The amazing pieces Bull performs on oud, an instrument he picked up after meeting Hamza el Din (whose Escalay: The Water Wheel is an AQ fave) show off Bull's singular gift for combining jazz, blues, middle eastern idioms and classical fantasias into new and unchartered territories."
"I was always trying to do something a little different, change, try different approaches." Sandy Bull

hush arbors

'Limited live CDR release from Hush Arbors (Six Organs Of Admittance, Sunburned Hand Of The Man, Wooden Wand). Includes 'Since We Have Fallen' and a beautiful run of lonesome folk foo cut with a poignant reading of Neil Young's 'Sugar Mountain'. Recorded in Knoxville 2006.'

spires that in the sunset rise

'A brilliant melange of middle eastern and kraut influences, their unique take on things is a breath of fresh air to the psych folk community.

the north sea

The North Sea: 'awesome brad your best disk'.

red favorite

''Jeremy Pisani recorded these 11 tracks between 1996 and 2003. As a resident of western Massachusetts, he shared stages with acts like Sunburned Hand of Man, P.G.Six, MV & EE Medicine Show, Flaherty & Corsano duo, Dredd Foole and Joshua Burkett but has maintained a curiously low profile.

The combinations of fingerpicking guitar meanderings with additional textures and some murmering voice (like on “First”) fits well with music like early Tower Recordings, Six Organs Of Admittance, Currituck Co., etc." Psychedelic Folk

valerie webb & paul labrecque

'Ramble on, so so', 'Swift River Blues' y como colofón un sobrecogedor homenage a Rachel Corrie de casi ocho minutos.

'This is a beautiful, dense album in so many ways; it offers up something new with every listen' Brad Rose

joshua burkett

joshua burkett - life less lost (feather one's nest records 1998/spirit of orr 2003)

"Beam of folkaways passing tenements with bygone studio apartments as the lofts of the future awash in a microsecond of urban Om and the sparkly vastness of country mistery - a dragged in ray of tone we begin on the azure stylus of remembering. Effervescing bubbles of a lamp lit moon under an animal spirit sky for a moment screaming in absolute quietude of still night and waking to stained synapses trapped in the oxide of rails, gardens and the solitude breathing in the run off grooves of mushroom wood staves burning slowly with the ringing of nuthatch gorgeous in the synchronicity. His kind a loving time trapped in the red light, perfect when on. Furnished with strings and beads and love and Cosimo in his language the starry loneliness is perennial and that is all life less lost ever be, sipping in the universal ocean and returning a mistery of inmortality in the rear view mirror of memory smiling on a wavy scene tripped on capsules of beautiful sonic doors open and whispering wildcards of flowers and illusory prisms through his hushed towny cry of consciousness intimate with leaves, creatures and muted dirt honed through the jibba white love of grass horns and offered from his hand a brow of clouds fizzing on earth hidden rim bright as starfields, it is a pleasure to live here." - Matt Valentine

lau nau

kuupuu

recopilatorio de algunas canciones de sus primeras grabaciones: "Sateen Suutelemat" en Nidnod, "I Can Walk the Earth" en Foxglove y los 3 cdr's autoeditados. otra portada mágica de Jonna Karanka...

'Jonna Karanka aka Kuupuu is one of the main movers of the (deservedly) much hyped Finnish Psychedelic Free Folk scene. Originally hailing from Tampere she is known as a core member of Avarus, Anaksimandros, Kukkkiva Poliisi and Maniacs Dream. Additionally, she has recently started Hertta Lussu Ässä with Lau Nau and Islaja and has collaborated with Tomutonttu (aka Jan Anderzen of Kemialliset Ystävät) and Paavi (as Lussu ja Paavi).
"Yökehrä" is the first of two vinyl-only LP's on Dekorder compiling the best material from her first four CD-R and cassette releases, all of which immediately became sought after collector's items, fetching ridiculous prices on eBay.

This LP is a beautiful collection of haunting (sometimes spooky) home baked freeform folk songs, incorporating strange lo-fi loops, vocal drones and psychedelic cut-ups, made using weirdly tuned plucked and strummed strings, bells, clattery percussion, unidentifiable wind instruments, backwards tape loops and a ton of other noisemakers all played and recorded by herself; accompanied by her distinctive voice (often looped and layered) with vocals sung and whispered in her native Finnish language, making the whole atmosphere even more haunting and mysterious. Jonna Karanka creates an intimate space where the listener feels like sitting next to her in a small chamber or outside in the woods where Kuupuu sings a lullaby just for them.'

miss capricho

grails

Sounds Like: "Heavy Metal Fahey", or....Erkin Koray on a morphine binge.'
'sad but true....there's now a Grails Myspace page.'

larkin grimm / the beautiful babes in springtime brainwave band feat. earl monster

"holding on to the thick rain smelling black and white striped hairs of a wild cat these psychedelic prayer songs ride you all the way down a shadowy world of haunted forests and deep ice-cold lakes in which powerful otherworldly voices seduce you with some sweet melodies. handmade cover with lots of drawings in a black edition of 100 copies... both sides are actually larkin, so you know. very sweet stuff. numbered edition on the always awesome sloow tape imprint. sweet covers of course."

adicción! Josephine Foster meets Snow falls in November (distribuye Time-Lag)

the bastard wing

"Debut recording from this new group featuring Christina Carter of Charalambides and Andrew McGregor of Gown, last heard together on their duo split with My Cat Is An Alien. A slow storm of delayed/reverbed guitars marching towards an ever-receding horizon with some beautiful vocals and songwriting from Carter that combines high, acid folk stylings with a heavy, psychedelic atmosphere and Haino-esque shots of gothic electricity."
"...recorded during the winter months of 2005 in Western Massachusetts, Carter and MacGregor approached the album like a long-distance, it’s-in-the-mail collaboration, though in reality recording their parts across the hall from each other. Thematically, Crystal Thicket treads familiar ground for a Carter record: past life regressions, natural birth, growth, erosion, decay. Musically, however, there’s something new going on here. Imagine ’70s nostalgia, soul guitars and Studio 54. In other words, imagine Carter’s first pop album."
