ov

más: 'The first two tracks are lengthy abstract soundscapes of bells and chimes and gongs and percussion. The amazing thing is that the final result doesn't necessarily sound all that percussive, instead Chasse and Boepple manage to smooth the sounds into a dreamy billowy fog, with tinkling bells, reverberating chimes, it's like floating through a slowed down sculpture garden, huge pieces of metal slowly swinging, and gently rubbing up against each other, sending soft ringing tones to float softly across the gauzy landscape like dry leaves on a summer breeze, underpinned by slow low end pulses, smears of glistening shimmer and a constellation of glimmering tinkles. There are lilting guitars too, but plucked and strummed so sparely, they almost just sound like more chimes. The record shifts gears after that, drifting from one dreamlike sound to another, a rich and exotic tribal landscape, huge swells of crystalline fuzz beneath fluttering flute melodies, primitive shakers and hand drums, and what sounds like forest sounds, drifting in and out of the mix, a world of alien lullabies, super distorted melodies over warm warbling woodwinds and textural percussion that sounds more like the crinkle of plastic, a gentle stream of fuzzy organ, buzzing harmonica, plink plonk guitar melody, pocket full of coins jangle, all bathed in a soft focus shimmer and some Eno-esque melodic ambience constructed from a dense assemblage of notes and tones, rich and oversaturated.
Packaged in a beautiful hand printed sleeve, a strange angular crystalscape on the front, a mysterious symbol on the back, each sleeve with a different color ink and different colored paper. Includes an insert with liner notes and an image of some mysterious multi horned instrument on the other. As with most things like this, super limited!!!'

charalambides

'Another new and equally jaw-dropping collection of archival material from the duo of Tom and Christina Carter with one track from the first trio line-up that also included Jason Bill (now of Migrantes). A huge amount of sonic territory covered here, featuring 1998 material drawn from the original Houston album sessions as well as tracks from late 95, unreleased material from 95's Drilling The Curve sessions and late 95 material from an aborted Siltbreeze album. Tom is on vocals, electric and acoustic guitar and saxophone, Christina on vocals, organ and guitar and Jason on acoustic guitar. Hand-numbered edition of 250 copies in beautiful individually painted hand-made sleeves.'

richard youngs

'Brand new limited, privately-pressed and hand-assembled album from Richard on his revitalised No Fans imprint. Beautiful collection of song-based material that reconciles his recent experiments involving miasmas of heart-fluttering shakuhachi with delayed vocals, acoustic guitar, cifteli, dulcimer, electric slide bass, kazoo, thai harp and zither. This last batch of No Fans releases has been one of Youngs' most consistently mind-blowing runs since the early Advent/New Angloid Sound/Ceaucescu series and this one feels like a coming together of a whole bunch of recently formulated moves. Very fragile atmosphere with the kind of disorientating F/X-heavy depth that will have record collectors puzzling over whether to file it next to Mark Fry, Martin Carthy, Jandek or The Grateful Dead circa Aoxomoxoa. Great cover shot in patented Summer Wanderer-style too. Apparently some of the basic tracks were recorded several years back at home in Harpenden but finally finished in the last month, a fact which only emphasises the general career-spanning feel of the sonics.' volcanic tongue

vlor

'Vlor was originally the guitar duo of Silber Records chief Brian John Mitchell (Remora) and his best friend, Russell Halasz experimenting with drones, loops, and reverbs between 1992 and 1998, culminating in the “Lavished” (1997) and “Luxate” (1998) EPs. The project ended when Halasz moved to Florida in ’98. Mitchell decided to revive the project last year while preparing archival releases for his label, so he sat down and composed and recorded nearly an hour and a half of guitar riffs and arpeggios and farmed them off to half a dozen friends and label mates to complete. So the release is essentially prepared by a virtual band comprised of Aarktica’s Jon DeRosa, Lycia’s Mike VanPortfleet, RivuletsNathan Amundson, Red Morning ChorusJesse Edwards, 6P.M.’s Paolo Messere and vocalist Jessica Bailiff. The delicate opener “Trust In Weapons” sets the table for a feast of minimalist guitar pluckings, drones, and sound manipulations, whereas “Wires” is a true supergroups extravaganza, with input from everyone (but VanPortFleet). The title refers to the guitar upon which Mitchell plays his base drones which he saved from a fire and restrung with steel wire. The sonic results are akin to the “Wire Music” collaborations between Alastair Galbraith and Matthew De Gennaro. As a huge fans of DeRosa’s work, I’m partial to his collaborative efforts here, which are among the most sedate on tracks like “Weakening Blows” and "Light At The Speed Of Sound" where he fills in the spaces between Mitchell’s original notes with complimentary strokes of glistening beauty. “Horses In Deserts as expected, gallops along and, whether subconsciously or not, actually did remind me of America’s “Horse With No Name,” as in, “I’ve been through the desert on a horse with no name.” “Potential New Sound” is a fluffy bed of electronic feathers…a marshmallow overcoat of Amundson’s keyboards, Bailiff’s acoustic guitar, Edwards’ Indian instruments and Messere’s percussives. The album works because, despite the rudimentary two-note riffage of a lot of Mitchell’s source material, his decision to have multiple collaborators adding layers onto his framework gives the album a full-band sound, making for an eclectic, yet exciting listen that might have otherwise languished in boxes like millions of other guitarists’ personal noodlings and peripheral creations. Bailiff’s breathy vocals on “Suncatcher” add an element of warmth, although I’m still impressed with the soft reflective, stroll-through-the-woods atmosphere of tracks like “Pale Lights” and “Days Like Smoke”. Overall, a beautiful album for late night or early morning navel gazing. ~ Jeff Penczak, Foxy Digitalis'

the singleman affair

Songs of Green Pheasant, The Clientele, The Big Huge, A Taste of Ra, Fred Neil, Skip Spence, Leonard Cohen, The Handsome Family... sítar, panderetas, melodías cristalinas, silbidos a lo Morricone, habitaciones de hotel, ciudades de paso, road movies...The Singleman Affair me recuerdan a tantas cosas. a aquel primer disco de los españoles Grupo Salvaje, si se hubieran mudado al campo, en 'Baby you've been on my mind', a Forever Changes en 'Sun in Your Eyes', a los Beachwood Sparks más silvestres...Dan Schneider es un maestro a la hora de hacer canciones como 'Dragonflies to Find', tan emocionantes y perfectas, soleadas como 'Little Sister' o 'Elaine', campestres y divertidas como 'Good to be with You again', y en todas ellas suena tan seguro y familiar que Let's kill the summer parece cualquier cosa menos un debut.

cursillistas

'Heard Palace Brothers' Days In The Wake. Made music. Interned at Time-Lag Records. Heard music. Made music. Recorded Rotary and Gems as gift for friends and family. Time-Lag distributed, and the 10 copies available sold out in two hours. Brad Rose heard Rotary and Gems. Wrote that it was "an excellent introduction to what promises to be one of my favorite folk-inspired projects around" and awarded it a 9 out of 10 in a foxydigitalis review. Wrote more songs. 14 songs finished for upcoming album Thrush Chimes in the Field Haunt, which was released by Time-Lag Records in July 2006.'

eastern fox squirrels

"Dream Magazine has come to the same conclusion as I: Brad Rose does not sleep. He can't possibly. Here is a man who runs two labels (both highly prolific), an e-zine, blog, podcast, and who knows what else, and still manages to both work and be about half a dozen bands. He seems a one-man jewelled antler (in fact, he's revived their old e-mail group!), especially when it comes to pioneering some truly innovative and beautiful new groups.

Eastern Fox Squirrels is a collaboration between Brad, his wife Eden and Robert Horton. Along the way they are joined by the talents of Tom and Christina Carter (Charalambides), Dan Plonsey (a player in the company of Anthony Braxton and Eugene Chadbourne) and Jason Bill (Charalambides, also recording with Jack Rose.)

Sonically, Eastern Fox Squirrels has a varied pallet. Like the Jewelled Antler folks, we have bouzouki, glockenspiels, bowed banjos, weird exotic flutes and who knows what else being used to great effect. The results being very much like what you'd expect; experimental but with soft, round edges and nice, nearly ambient dirges that feel welcome but really aren't normal." lvd

hala strana

"Hala Strana is a summation of Steven R. Smith's interest in the traditional folk musics of Central and Eastern Europe. Incorporating the melodies and scales of village music from Croatia, Hungary, Romania, the Czech Republic, and Poland, Smith pushes his music into new territories, using layered instruments like gourd guitar, clay flowerpots, glockenspiel, violin, and others."

"White Sleep delivers the first new Hala Strana recordings since These Villages. The three breathtaking new compositions rival the best Hala Strana offerings to date, and include a powerful cover version of 'Dream Forever' by Dog Faced Hermans. His compositions—combining 4/8-track recordings of live instruments with minidisk and boombox overdubs—conjure a dream symphony that defies easy categorization on the 7” lathe, White Sleep. Beset with wheezing ambient tones and degraded tape noise, these pieces sound positively ancient and fall somewhere between Eastern European traditional folk, the homemade primitive works of Harry Partch and the early noise drone of  Velvet Underground. An edition of 60 copies, with handmade sleeves."

tara jane o' neil

"Nice slab of tranced-out Finnish free-form from Lauhkeat Lampaat featuring core members Antti Tolvi and Jaakko Tolvi who are also key members of the more ferral Rauhan Orkesteri. Hypnotic rhythms pulled from a pool of the kind of unorthodox instrumentation that generally separates these Finnish folks from their US/UK counterparts. Also features a guest appearance from Lau Nau."

uton

uton - mystery revolution (digitalis, 2006)

"Uton is a genius & I always love his art, album titles & cryptic noise mud-slides. Great forestdrone, shortwave, bowed guitars? ... I don't know what he uses, but it all sounds mysterious & subconscious, dreamlike."--Glenn Donaldson, Jewelled Antler
"Tampere, Finland has become quite the musical hotbed over the past few years. Staples like Avarus and Kemialliset Ystävät make their beds in the gnome-infested waters throughout the city. Uton is perhaps the country's best kept secret. Mystery Revolution is a sonic excursion through the Finnish forests unlike any other. Massive drones are balanced by the hypnotic dance of flutes, bells, and keyboards. Underneath everything runs a mind-altering stream of fuzzed-out brainwaves. Every corner you turn, there's another smiling nymph, begging you to follow the golden path into the mystic woods. Uton's minimalist rumblings are there to infect and enchant, and Hirvonen never fails to impress. The mask is off with Mystery Revolution, and Uton will remain shrouded in obscurity no more. This pine-scented excursion may be mysterious on the surface, but overall is a thing of beauty, lying in wait for the perfect time to infect you. Mystery Revolution is proof that Uton's dreamy soundscapes are one of Finland's finest exports."

roy montgomery

"...Roy Montgomery writes on the inner sleeve of Temple IV that it was inspired by a trip to the Northern Guatemalan rain forest where he endured physical discomforts and attempted to come to terms with the death of a love. Though its nice to have a concrete description, those words are unnecessary. Temple IV is like an opera in a foreign language with no translation, where through the music alone, the listener is able to ascertain what the circumstances were, what the mood was and other background information... The lush songs on Temple IV are brimming with an aching sadness, violent anger and exhausting relief. This intensely beautiful album does not come as a surprise... the ravishing feedback on Temple IV expresses more than most words."

wooden wand & the sky high band

"Does James Toth ever sleep? Having already released Gipsy Freedom this year with his Vanishing Voice band, and re-released his solo album Harem of the Sundrum, Mr. Wooden Wand is set to release yet another album, Second Attention, with his Sky High Band—featuring members of Skygreen Leopards, Vanishing Voice, and Davenport.
Still with me? The album, currently scheduled for a September 12 release on Kill Rock Stars, was supposedly recorded during a two-week period in San Francisco “holed up in a modified two story house with nothing but three reels of tape, a bunch of instruments and copious amounts of drugs and booze.” Amidst all this heathenry, the group churned out an album that reportedly has more of a traditional folk sound than Toth’s other projects. Go figure"

"...no matter. There is beauty in the periphery but more in the small details. Second Attention is where East truly meets West. Where the shimmer suddenly gets grimmer. Sunshine meets grease. It will likely be remembered as the album that remains after any and all 'movements' inevitably move on."

"Jättiläisrotta (Secret Eye) cycles between rumbling free jazz, airy tribalism, and spaced-out Day of Niagara sessions. They manage also to slip the lovely underwater, near-folk strum-a-long "Ahoistava Haisemisen Loordi" into the mix. "Prinssihalonen" kicks up a chiming psychedelic vortex as powerful as anything Avarus has done to date. The strings are skyrockets and the boom-crash chugga-chugga drums are a treat. Throughout, think Sunburned Hand of the Man, perhaps the collective's best, kindred analogue." - Brandon Stosuy for Pitchfork
"Avarus have reached new heights on "Jättiläisrotta." This is fun music. It's about sitting down with friends with a few drinks and having a good time. Now if only every such encounter would produce such fantastic aural results. Avarus are definitely one-of-a-kind." - Brad Rose for Foxy Digitalis
"The wide-eyed forest dwellers of Avarus come from the pool of Finnish musicians that spawned the magnificent Kemialliset Ystävät. They play a brand of music on the outer extremes of the free-folk movement. A spirit of drugged-out frenzy drives this relentlessly changing music, resulting in songs that evolve like a species: not on an obvious linear path, but in fits and starts-obeying a strange logic inaccessible to the players themselves. Avarus conjures a gorgeous and frightening musical object, and they capture the feeling of mystery of music on acid." - Bryan Berge from Stylus Magazine
"Avarus will melt your mind and free your soul. Wander into their dark forest and join the tribe"

six organs of admittance

el sol del dios

Six Organs of Admittance - the sun awakens (drag city)

todo lo bonito que podía ser ben chasny quedó retratado en 'school of the flower', él dice ahora que para bonito bonito vintage burden de Charalambides, y tanto que sí digo yo. me cuesta bastante entrelazar las asociaciones o describir los sentimientos. tengo aquí a la izquierda sus anteriores discos, en la mesa unos artículos y en la pantalla una ventana con la nota de prensa de Drag City. creo que deberíamos hablar de la persona;

keiji haino + sitaar tah!

"Split release with important records. 90+ minute live drone event billed as Animamima featuring Keiji Haino playing vocals, flute, electric tanbur, rhythum box, electric hurdy gurdy and electric sruthi-box, also playing is the group called Sitaar Tah! which is a 20 piece sitar orchestra, guesting for this one time meeting was Fuyuki Yamakawa who plays Igil, and throat singing. “Based on the instrumentation present I think one can get a pretty good idea of what the sonics are like. The recording quality is really amazing James Plotkin did a fantastic job with mastering duties as always.” - Archive.

ray off

"Ray-Off is the solo guise of James Currin, who also runs the United Fairy Moons label, a small New Zealand imprint that looks to be one of the most consistently interesting purveyors of avant-thought this side of Corpus Hermeticum. Ghost Wolf Of Thunder Mountain is a fabulously eerie trip, combining evocative hillbilly guitar shapes (reminiscent of Six Organs Of Admittance at points), a Morricone-esque feel for spatial dynamics, some disconcertingly abstract electronics and a dimensionally fucked use of field recordings. The whole thing unfolds with a sense of narrative purpose that makes a lot of intuitive structural sense even as it swerves into wildly diverting passages of digital disruption and heavy drone: "Ghost wolf traverses inlet, plain, city and sky, battling altitude sickness and dreaming a crystal cloud beneath his limping, sticky pins." - David Keenan (Volcanic Tongue)

Ghost Wolf part II (...y a volar)

6magik9

"the latest offering of psych/sludge from the only real band in the universe. at times space travel , air decorations , or pleading sufferance. from out of the twig-clad back-blocks of Queensland and northern New South Wales arrives another ecstatically apocalyptic missive from the musicyourmindwillloveyou collective (home of Brothers of the Occult Sisterhood and Terracid, White Cobra et al...).6majik9 is obstensibly the 'big band' manifestation of the collectives psychedelic enhanced group mind and features multiple guitrists, flautists, cellists and drummers and an irrepresible (and quite mad...) vocalist cum theremin stroker."
"hay mucho ruido de fondo. ¿estás en una fiesta?
casi, casi."

zukanican

Bug Hunter (sutil y explosiva), Where are the Casualties?
“Theremin battery, skippy keys, s-bending bass, drill pattern drums, siren organ in continuum, other pulses muscling in on the action, a diversion into free-funk with sci-fi white noise cutting across.”
“…Zukanican can safely be categorized as uncategorizeable”
“…..free jazz fragments flutter by like psychedelic moths attracted by the fire”
“….. their free-flowing improvisations, tasty Krautrock grooves and jazz flourishes immediately paint a huge aural canvas with thick layers of colors borrowed from just about everyone from Coltrane and Sun Ra to The Soft Machine and Bablicon.”
Ray Dickaty: saxophones & flute
Phil Lucking: trumpets
James Pagella: drums and percussion
Harry Sumnall: synths and percussion
Tom Sumnall: bass

hush arbors

"Avant-folk unit Rameses III hail from a place where subtle drifts are priceless. These insular drones are highlighted by rich acoustic depths, adding so much contrast that it's heartbreaking. Within these digital walls rises something majestic, extracted from the soil. Having worked with the likes of Jack Rose, Christina Carter, David Grubbs, Robert Horton, Ben Reynolds and Fursaxa, Rameses are getting ready to release their first proper CD album, Matanuska, on The Music Fellowship"

dead city radio # 2

influencias: coltrane, ayler, riley, krautrock, lamonte young, electronic, cut'n'paste, dronemusic, improvisation, raga, ethnic music.

keijo & the free players

keijo & the free players - after at once (digitalis cdr, 2006)

nick castro & the young elders

"Previously backed by The Poison Tree, which included Josephine Foster and members of Espers, Nick Castro has assembled a new band of players under the moniker The Young Elders - a truly stellar cast of musicians whose combined resumes include folk and avant rock ensembles Current 93, In Gowan Ring, Damo Suzuki's Network and Cul de Sac. Castro has found a lineup in The Young Elders that fully articulates his vast and grandiose visions, and subsequently Come Into Our House shimmers brightly in sound and scope. An East-meets-West melting pot of instrumentation - from acoustic guitars, upright bass and piano to Celtic harp, Moroccan tabla and nyabinghi drum - Come Into Our House is at once primitive and polished, elaborate yet elusive, effortlessly mating Bert Jansch-style folk song ("Winding Tree"), psychedelic folk rock ("One I Love"), Middle Eastern traditional music ("Attar") and Bay Area acid-raga ("Lay Down Your Arms") to a kind of organic studio Musique Concrete that Can forged on albums like Tago Mago. The results are astonishing, challenging and utterly psychedelic."

jorge castro / carlos giffoni

"Lovely, crapped-out electronic noises that come and go in waves. Drones are looped and flanged and soaked in reverb, then layered and staggered, until the whole mess sound like a nest of electronic cicadas hopping about in an orgone accumulator. Beautiful, haunting sounds drift into the ether as mechanical cyclotron noises form the bedrock that keeps it all anchored (more or less) to the ground. The textures vary wildly and the entire disc (one long piece) tends to creep through various stages or movements of sound, where they'll stumble onto something interesting and hang with it for a while, processing and mutating it until it either turns into something else completely or they exhaust its possibilities and move onto something else. This is less "music" than it is the ambient sound of power plants, automated assembly lines, and drone factories. A kinder and gentler (sort of) variation on what Throbbing Gristle imagined when they coined the term "industrial music," perhaps. If Eno had been sitting in the office of an electromagnetic batch processing facility rather than an airport when he came up with the concept of ambient music, the results might have been something of this nature. The ambient nature of this disc is in the fact that it could be turned down and played as background sound without too much problem, but at the same time it offers much for closer listening. There are some beautiful and unearthly sounds buried in the drones and mechanical loops here. Another exotic offering from Public Eyesore."

"..the piece then slowly evolves and develops through a variety of flavours–wind and guitar with theremin-y sci fi sounds; looped strumming with building woobles and echoed percussion; pulsing and swirling sounds; plucking; complex layers of sound over the surface–sci fi, machines; strumming guitar and descending tones and into a slightly wild and woolly conclusion."

our brother the native
