tulasi

"Bumtapes is proud to give you another chance to hear this incredible album, plus another previously unreleased track from the same sessions, and with all new artwork. Originally released on vinyl in an edition of 118 copies by Troglosound in 2008 (now totally sold out) Finland’s Tulasi crafted an album drenched in Eastern drones and Finnish backroad folk meditations. The two musicians who make up the band have also featured in bands such as Vapaa, Keijo & Free Players, Aan, Uton, Kulkija and Kutomo. And have also previously released a cassette on Sloow tapes.

To quote the original write up for the LP...."One of the most harmonic expressions of spiritual freak-folk coming out from Finland, Tulasi spreads around warm and positive feelings, created through spontaneous junctions of flute, guitar, violin, percussions, tambura and voices. So, the perfect sound to bring our Souls peacefully inside the wintertime is coming directly from the North”. bumtapes

hny

"HNY is a member of sonic oddballs Social Junk and this is her first release solo. HNY traverses the same mystic forests as her witchy contemporaries (think Grouper, Inca Ore) but prefers to head out into those forests in the dead of night. "Mute In The Dust" is jammed full of darkly-looped synth and guitar lines which swirl like blackened smoke around her banshee wail. Occasionally her vocals are allowed to travel along on their own and end up in wind tunnel of mirrors."expressway to my skull
"Dudes can dispute it, but the feminine mystique is real, especially in the realms of haunted interior-psych voice musique. A lotta our favorite ladies (Inca ore, Grouper, Pocahaunted,..) have the “private dreamer” communion ritual down to a science, whether due to talent, vision, chromosomes or some combo of the 3. We wanna add another siren to the squad: HNY. When not buried in work as the sax/bass-playing half of Social Junk, she’s found time to drop a couple stellar solo joints over the past year-ish (here you can touch the sky). Nine song-stories of naked keyboards, 3 am spirit loops, and creaky attic narratives that blur the line between bedroom voodoo ceremony and otherworldly suicide note. Recorded entirely outdoors on a tiny side porch in West Oakland. Dive in. Pro-dubbed tapes in white cases with hallucinatory guitar-girl cover art (3 different color paper possibilities), and housed in hand-painted canvas pouches. Edition of 100" nnf

im jahrtal • reprisen und instrumentalstuecke [sloow tapes 2009]

"Post-Pilz folk instrumentals from the mountains of Tyrol. Jahrtal is the one-man project of Ewald Spiss, who has been involved in music and art since the early eighties. Tranquil melodies, exotic instrumentation and barking dogs echoing peaceful mountains and forests. 70 copies." sloow tapes

"Im Jahrtal is the magical musical world inhabited by Ewald Spiss of the Austrian Tyrol. It's a world of pastoral psych-folk instrumentals with backwards tapes, drifting flute, exotic instrumentation, guitar and pipe organ madrigals and a rudimentary charm in the way it's all put together. Lovely stuff." boa melody bar

"Recorded at The Barn in Ojai, CA by Dreamcolour. Intermission for Triangle Theories is full of trip inducing sounds. Guests include: Natalie Alyse, Teodora Nikolova, Betsy Sue and Bryn (tapdancing!). Blood Quantum starts the album with a chugging tribal beat giving way to a wave of free-form sounds, fading directly into Zoned, a tap dance/sax duo fades into a free-improv session complete with multi-drum sensory overload. the free players

The Free Players are a super-group of featuring members of Finnish free-jazz pawnpins Vapaa, Kheta Hotem, Kundalini Snakes and the venerable Keijo Virtanen. While previous documents of this band exist, this is apparently the more democratic version (no longer is it 'Keijo and the Free Players'), a shift documented by the more accessible sound here.

What we have here is an hour long set of jams that seems more reminiscent of Floyd and the Dead than what we've come to expect from Keijo's previous output. Wild guitar leads and wailing sax (nevermind the space-organ) reveals immediately what cloth this recording has been cut from -- which is to say that The Free Players is a true psychedelic album!" last visible dog

mountainhood

"the counterpart to "wings from a storm". acid-dripping lo-fi euphoric melancholy west coast folk beauty from Michael Curtis Hilde. this dude is seriously prolific, with a fine string of cdr only release under the Moontainhood and Almaden names, but this pair is a real apex of his still unfolding musical vision. "thunderpaint the stone horse electric" is a totally intimate & spontaneously vibed little gem. deeply felt, introverted, hallucinatory, and starry-eyed song stories delivered via fuzzy bedroom fourtrack gush. fevered vocals quiver, warble, double, and swoon around gentle or ragged acoustic guitar, foot-stomping tambourine thud & jingle, harmonium, breezy flute, warm tape hiss, and singing crystal cave atmospherics… we know the animals are dancing…" time-lag

six organs of admittance

"...What is it about the man that buries his sound in the ground? He has faith in the earth, for one. When we think of Six Organs of Admittance, we think of a man with six-string ambitions, a rambler with mystic beliefs and dark electric visions. It’s a big universe and we’re only human, which basically means that we’ve got spirit and that were going to die. But until then, we live. Six Organs of Admittance has lived to tell about it on Luminous Night.

"Seems like the LA based doooom dronelords Robedoor have slowed their endlessly prolific output lately, pretty sure these guys are in a bunch of other projects and are busy running record labels and stuff, but either way we're happy to have a few copies of their brand new cassette on Monorail Trespassing. Exorcism Blues delivers four brand new tracks of mind-melting, ground ripping heavy drone that falls somewhere between the synth sorcery of the recent secret abuse lps and the dark, doom drone stylings of earlier Robedoor recordings. Slow trudging glacial ambience that melts beneath the paralyzing summer heat. Super killer and super limited, we've only got a handful of these so act fast in you want one, they'll be gone before you know it!" aquarius

zukanican

zukanican - the stumbling block (pickled egg, 2009)

"The Stumbling Block is Zukanican’s second album and third release on Pickled Egg Records. Recorded in 2007-8 at The Kif in Liverpool the 8 track album mirrors the band’s live performances perhaps more than their other releases. The album was recorded and mixed by Zukanican and studio trickery has been kept to a minimum; what you hear ‘is was’".

guanaco & beggin' your pardon miss joan

"Thank you, my friend. My pages had been hacked but I hope to be back online soon. I am working on new songs in the peace and quiet though, and will keep in touch with all of my dear friends :) Below is a link for two new Guanaco ± songs, and if you want to post them feel free. These are my hymns to the Red Leaves. Love always, Lex" new site!

kabyzdoh obtruhamchi

"When Kabyzdoh Obtruhamchi’s self-titled c50 debuted late last year (Stunned no. 18), it sent a jolt through those of us who might have been unaware Russia had such a tempest brewing in its belly. Like some hyper-elastic one man jam-band oblivious to anything but perpetual motion, his sound simply shredded. And now after mere months, Sergey Kozlov is back to kick our butts permanently into the future. The trouble is doubled and so are the discs on this one-two ‘K.O.’ punch. As this is some of the most untethered sound being spun on either of the globe’s hemispheres right now, it goes without sAlineación a la derechaaying that ‘Estcho’ is a soundtrack of the yet-to-be. Like dropping by the year 4000 when a race of tattooed cyborgs throb in dionysian telepathy under guitar-guided biochemical tent party beats. Raveup til’ sundown and back again. harps of fuchsia kalmia with delphine dora

"Harps of Fuchsia Kalmia is the new weird-folk,avant-folk forest-music project of Salvatore Borrelli ((etre), Wondrous Horse); the music is made in a direct way, without processing or any other disturbance. Here he is joined by Delphine Dora, the brilliant singer and musician, who adds her honey sweet voice and piano to this already captivating set of sounds. "Pantomima Terrestre" or "Pantomime of the earth" could not be a more fitting name, this is the earth's musical, a complete production with characters, story lines and dedications, a perfect collage of traditional folk, field recordings, organic drones and percussion. delphine's airy vocals mingle with the drum beats, space sounds and radio static. birds chirp, dogs bark, cars drive by, and records spin backwards. sluggish dulcimer & guitar plucks crescendo beneath the drone of the harmonium. uniquely improvisational and experimental without loosing its familiarity, there's only one way to discover this world. press play. if your into caethua, vapaa, nnck, donato epiro and any other trippy explorations of italy, finland and forest spirits everywhere, this tape will not disappoint." tired trails

silver bullets - free radical [stunned records 2009]

"William Giacchi of Magic Lantern and Super Minerals reports: 'While visiting family in southern Sicily last December, I caught up with an old friend who has shared a very similar trajectory with me in interests of psychedelic music both newer and vintage, local and global. Much to my elated surprise, he has been equally busy producing new sounds of his own, having lately assembled a mysterious psychedelic groove ensemble known as Silver Bullets. I sat in on a recording session and realized I was in the presence of psychic brethren, and that Stunned Records would be the perfect platform to introduce their brand of tonal gyration. Both the Silver Bullets and Phil & Myste were thrilled about the partnership, and thus we present "Free Radical" — two sides, eleven tracks of kraut-funk, coned-out drone rock, and assorted experiments with space and time. Wade through bluesy head-nodders, Italian fuzz contests, interplanetary bleeps and blips, and liberated dance songs for anti-environments. Taking spiritual cues from Don Cherry's Eternal Rhythm, "Free Radical" is a statement of unity through musical expression and an ecstatic celebration of existence. Play this tape at full moon and brace yourself for the unforeseen happenings.'" mount eerie

"What if the sound of wind through trees could be translated into human words? What is it saying?

For WIND’S POEM by Mount Eerie, Phil Elverum spent almost two years out behind the house, at the edge of the woods, listening into the night and finding these words. Songs of impermanence, dark change, destruction, temporary blossoming, mortality, and an immense river of air tearing through the world make up the 3rd official album by Mount Eerie.

A hundred kinds of distortion, oceans of synth, and clouds of bass are the elements these twelve songs are built from, with moments of clarity occasionally revealing soft harmonies (featuring Nick Krgovich from Vancouver’s NO KIDS) reverently attempting to describe a dark mystery. The album holds a large debt to the music and world of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, as well as to some of the more innovative artists on the edges of ambient, colossal Black Metal. Like these influences, WIND’S POEM also drifts back and forth between a “dream world”, where the wind screams about fleeting existence, and reality, standing on the street, wide awake, looking at the hills outside town, remembering.

The album is well built, resting on the stone-solid production of Mount Eerie’s only actual member, Phil Elverum, recorded at various locations around his hometown of Anacortes, Washington. In large walls of warm noise you can hear the wind, or is it flames?, or cymbals?, voice-like through the fog. And then all at once the clouds part and a song hangs in the air, soft and clear" forcefieldpr

"What are the secret origins of Pocahaunted?...I guess there are no cool secret origins of the band. The name was in a dream of mine, and weirdly in that dream, I was in a band with Bethany. I barely knew her then, we’d never played music together and didn’t have any plan to start. I called her to hang out the next day and she was sitting on my couch, I just looked into her eyes and said ‘Your in this band with me now, it’s called Pocahaunted’. "A seven-piece jam crew comprised of 2-3 odd drum kits, sax, clarinet, mixer drones, electric guitar, a pile of pedals, various voices, and probably other unknown mystery junk, they straddle a fine, fucked up line between carefully orchestrated rhythmic psychedelia and total drum-circle-damaged freeform freak-sprawl...Two all-new sides of artfully interwoven live recordings encompassing all the band’s best moods: outsider world scorch, jittery horn ragas, basement attack trance, etc. Raw and real and alive as life." nnf

high wolf

"For some reason unexpected pleasures are superior to the expected variety, at least 9 times outta 10. And so it was when we happened upon the dizzy/fizzy music of French loop enthusiast High Wolf for the first time, regarding whom we had zero preconceived notions. Cheers to open minds/ears then, cause the High Wolf audio worldview is weird and wobbly and one that should appeal to all lovers of tripped out, swelter-zone equatorial electronics. Animal Totem is High Wolf’s debut release, and it piles wavy, tranced keyboard melodies one on top of the other into a pulsing ritual heap of colored smoke. Elsewhere he slips in sunset fuzz-guitar lines and temple meditation tones and even dangles down some flanger-flecked synthetic percussion like a bunch of mellow yellow bananas. Take a look up/down/all-around. Overall it’s a rich, ripe rumble in the escapist-psych jungle." nnf

ganglians

"Sacramento's Ganglians want an island somewhere where they can soak in the sun and prowl the canopy by night. It's not often that they do get out, but they can get down for that. Recording sometimes as one, sometimes as four it's a real game to figure out where the entity comes from and where it's going. First and foremost it's about uncertain pleasures. It's a bit like choose your own adventure. There's "codeine balladry"; a slightly upsetting tempo that is quickly flushed into an aural high, the next moment you're in the toy strewn abyss of the bedroom and then out to the tribal caves of the natives. The planets align and the sun beats down, palms tingling, and you are on the island they've built, the scenery constantly shifting for a better view, of you." woodsist

dopo

«Subterranean valleys and peaks, showcasing the duality of chaos and order, cobbled beats overlaid with environmental recordings and slightly arrhythmic acoustics. Personal yet ethereal, places where memories are made, only to decay or change, subtly but significantly, over time. A travel-friendly atmosphere, a little melancholy and homesick, but excited for different frontiers. (9/10)» foxy digitalis

É pena!» a trompa

sun araw - heavy deeds lp (not not fun 2009)

"*Blue Vinyl* Sun Araw - and the Not Not Fun label in general for that matter - are becoming ever more essential with each release. Heavy Deeds is the latest dubbed-out, tropical psych missive from this far-out collective, featuring an increasingly mature approach to experimental queasiness, which on this occasion is reminiscent of fellow solar travellers Sunburned Hand Of The Man knocking heads together with Sun Ra.

wrugs

"After several name changes and a couple of musical rebirths, the dust has settled and Wrugs prevail. Kyle Poff, one of the founders, and old college peer of mine, sent me this teaser of an EP. Coming in at just over 8 minutes, I'm teleported for a very short time into a native land where the cannibals give you coffee and ask you about your favorite colors. They want to get to know you. I mean, really know you." test pilots

pefkin

"We've been a fan of Pefkin's delicate dreamscapes for a long time, and as such we're immensely proud to be able to present Zugunruhe. With its combination of processed guitar, free-form percussion, haunting vocals and analogue electronics, Zugunruhe is a beautiful collection of tracks that walks that ever-narrowing path between pop songs and pure abstraction." sound & fury

dreamcolour

"A blues/folk/soul inspired combination of improvised sessions. Natalie Alyse lends her lovely voice to assorted grooves, Robert Magill adds some death-folk and the rest weave a psychedelic soul."

"Dreamcolour reflects a collective of musicians from Ventura County, California. The concept is to heal and lift the spirits and souls of human beings from all walks of life, with the fiery expression of collective free improvisation. We aim to bring back the trance-inducing vibrations, frequencies and rhythms used by the ancient shamans and spiritual healers of the past, but also to experiment with and incorporate the scientific advances of the present and future, relating music as a direct pathway to the human spirit and as a healing force in the universe." dreamcolour

black flowers

black flowers - i grew from a stone to a statue (bo'weavil 2009)

"The music references repeatedly the cyclical nature of life, in both the form and the lyrics. "I've seen them all rise and fall." With that, the inevitable break in the cycle. "For the Lord knows who must die." Another reminder to live in the now. And this is what it sounds like." bo'weavil

tiny vipers

"Isolate yourself, cover your head with a snug pair of headphones, turn off all the lights, and light a candle. It’s the best way to listen to Life on Earth, Tiny Vipers’ sophomore album. Jesy Fortino, the one-woman wonder behind Tiny Vipers, is an unassuming young songwriter. She huddles over her guitar and avoids eye contact with her audience, but her thoughts are revealed through song. The Seattle-based musician relishes in a certain simplicity in her old folk tunes, and the shimmering emptiness of her haunting voice and stark picking of guitar say a lot without overwhelming. Fortino recorded Life on Earth in an analog studio in Austin, Texas...Yet the album as a whole is sadly beautiful, a trap of ghostlike webs that carries you to a dark, timeless place." danielle
"Tiny Vipers is Jesy Fortino, a musician living in Seattle. Since her last and first album, 2007’s Hands Across the Void, she has been back and forth across Europe, on tours into and through the United States, transfixing audiences into a solemn hush. Transcending the mere folk tag, Fortino draws from disparate inspirational sources, from the avant-garde or from country musician Townes Van Zandt..." sub pop

wand

"To quickly address the elephant in the room - certainly, collections of demos, outtakes and home recordings are mostly bogus, but obviously you're reading this, so obviously I've somehow been coerced into releasing this batch of tunes, and you've bought it or stolen it or borrowed it or gotten a promo or whatever, so let's cut to the chase. In my defense, all of the cuts contained herein are 'songs' in the traditional western sense - my experiments in "surf harmonica" and "doom zydeco" will not be chronicled here, deep and plentiful as those archives may be...You've already pardoned the narcissism, now pardon the cliche: I stand behind these songs as snapshots" and enjoy them despite their many flaws. I hope you do, too." The Wand, Nashville
